Following on from a thread on the AH, I wonder how many new writers understand the difference between submitting a story for submission and submitting it to a volunteer editor. Some seem to be despairing of little feedback and giving up without ever submitting it to a VE to get real feedback, far more than submission editors would ever have time to.

Does anyone else find this, or is everyone else deluged with submissions?

I tried to volunteer as an editor and didn't get any official response back. Following the advice of some veterans here I wandered out into the threads and hung out my shingle. I certainly wasn't swamped but I did get some submissions and then I got busy in my offline life and had to bow out of editing for a bit.

I have no idea how things generally work with submissions or whether people often see a VE first or not. I would venture to say "not" in a lot of cases, but different editors value different things so really I'm just guessing based on what I read in the lists myself.

I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that there's been a chronic problem with the VE program for some time now, certainly since I've been here, which is getting on to a year now.

Since I don't even know how the VE program is supposed to work, I have no suggestions to make on what needs to be fixed &/or how, so I don't know what to say. I guess volunteering to serve as an editor here in a thread on this board wouldn't hurt.

They're working on updating the V.E. program to the point where it's more self-sufficient. It's taken some time to get the scripts that run it written and in place. They're still doing it.

The problem has been that for a really long time editors would just not respond to email. There was a huge list and maybe four or five people who replied back at times. It might take some time for authors to realize that the list has been revamped and is monitored more closely now.

I registered recently and it seems to be working now. The 72 hour rule is a big help, but some mail takes a long time to get through to me as an Editor.

Thanks for the update. I'll check out the program again. Either way, I get a pretty good response trolling the threads. Speaking of which I should be reading right now!

My Two Cents........

If and when I get some feedback at least I'd consider it yes I understand the differance between a Submission and Submitting it to an VE... Right now I'm scrambling for anything, I have a "Romance Genre short that I'm playing with" and a um hrrm "Non human Supernatural forces mondo bizzaro little tale that I finished up the other night."
