I'm not sure if it's on Literotica or Storiesonline - I tend to
flick between sites when the good authors in the genres that I like
are still busy writing - but I'm thinking it's more likely to be on Lit.

I can't remember all the middle parts of the plot, but the premise of
the story is that a man is going through a painful divorce with his
wife (I think because of unfaithfulness on her part). I believe there
was a dispute over the custody of their daughter, and he was driving
with his daughter when they suffered a car accident.

He wakes up in hospital and he doesn't want to see his wife who does
really want to see him. There is some hint that his daughter is
suffering. I think his father or father-in-law reads a book to him,
hinted as the good book: it's misleading you to think that it's the
Bible, when at the end of the story the final lines say that it's by
Jules Verne!

Now what makes this story special (at least to me) is that he starts
dreaming of an alternate reality...

In his dream he finds himself free of his wife (perhaps she's dead, I
can't remember), and his daughter is alive. His daughter is probably
an infant. He gets a teenage babysitter who is about 14 years old, who
gets on well with the daughter. She falls in love with him but they
don't do anything because she's too young. His daughter sees this and
resents the babysitter for some reason (perhaps thinking she's no longer
her friend and is usurping her mother's role, and maybe she's a gold-digger?),
and has tantrums. The babysitter leaves...

She returns when she's something between the age of 18-21, and they
want to get married. The daughter never got over her childhood upset
and she breaks the windows of the house and in the process hurts the
woman who was just pleading with her to stop. The daughter suffers
guilt and breaks down and they come to friendship again. The woman
marries the man.

Then one day the man is involved in another car-crash. He returns to
hospital at the time of his first crash, but it's an alternate reality
where his new wife is now present (and the old wife is non-existent
somehow; I'm not sure about who the daughter's mother is anymore). He
wakes up with her and his daughter greeting him. At the end of the
story it refers to the good book, and it's here it says that it's by
Jules Verne.

I cannot remember whom the story is by. I've searched all the authors
I've been reading recently, and I cannot find the story in any of
their submissions. I'd probably presume then that the story is older
than 3 years, and the author may no longer be active. I'd be
disappointed if he/she was dead and/or no longer posted. I thought it
could be Joesephus or someone like moogplayer (... though maybe
I should look again closely..) or Openbook ... someone old, perhaps slightly
spiritual (though maybe not very religious), but basically one of our
great classic authors. If anyone can identify this I'd love to know! I'm
seeking out all my past favourite stories and authors! :)

The story is Reality: Incubus? (Book One) by God's Acolyte... Thanks to massivereader/John for finding the story. It's not quite as mentioned above but it's not far off. It's on the storiesonline site. Sadly the author never wrote a sequel to the book, and while it's finished he only wrote one story, starting in 2003, finishing in 2005.
