What's the best way to find an editor? I have a short story that I feel has a lot of potential (for being more than just a stroke story or whatever the terminology is) and I'd like to work with an advanced editor.

I don't have any problems with grammar and the basics. I'm a published freelance writer who has even taught writing courses, but my pacing, showing instead of telling and character development could use some work. (Most importantly, knowing when to show instead of tell... and vice versa, esp. in erotic fiction.).

I haven't written fiction in years, and I'm more than willing to learn and improve, but I think I need someone pretty advanced to be able to help me. I hope that doesn't sound arrogant. I really do want to improve with help from someone who knows a lot about fiction and erotica! When I glimpse through the "editor list", mostly I find people willing to do copyediting.

What's the best way to find an editor that can help me with the more advanced parts of writing stories?

Post the job at the Editorial Freelancers Association Web site? Other than that, I don't know--it looks like you're already advanced beyond the help you'd likely get here.

But they have an "Editor's Forum" here where most who want editorial help ask for it.

Hi Tara, and welcome.

I'll confess right off I don't have a lot of experience in working with the volunteer editors here, though the one or two times I've been patient enough to enlist the help of one, the experience has been positive. If you re-post your query in the 'Editor's Forum', you'll probably get the help you're after.

Aside from that, if you post your story here or in the Story Discussion Circle, there are a number of regulars who will gamely read and comment on your story. In my experience, here you get more people reading, with a mix of people coming from a reader's perspective, and a writer's perspective; a few will offer fairly in-depth constructive criticism, bearing your specific concerns in mind. In the SDC, procedure is to sign up in a queue, and priority is given to those who have given critiques in the past (I don't think anyone's currently in line), and fewer people tend to respond, but those who do tend to offer thorough, in-depth, thoughtful critiques. I recently got some immensely helpful feedback on a short story I'm currently working on; that thread is here if you want to check it out.

Good luck.

thanks! I saw some posters "seeking editors" in this section... probably I posted this is in the wrong place and should have gone to the editors forum instead. Reader feedback is good and I hope to start critting others' stories there and getting some feedback too!
