Anyone intrested in editing a "Group" story? This is my secound story, need help with grammer, spelling, ect. Thanks, DBH

In that case I'll hijack this thread rather than start a new one. btw, congrats, greathand.

Question #1
I submitted a story some couple of months ago, and it was rejected due to spelling errors. The errors that MS Word reports to me are things such as "rec-room", which, as far as I know, is what it is called... and "Noooo" and even "lego" (yes, I managed to fit 'lego' into the story... let your imagination run wild, you perv you! ;) ). Also, being a Canadian, MS Word will report to me that my use of the word "colour" and "curious" is incorrect, but I do not wish to change that, as it is not incorrect in my country. Am I SOL, then?

Question #2
I would very much like to have an editor review my story (I have two chapters pending and am stuck somewhere in the third, unsubmitted) but I feel as though I need to have a female review it. Not necessarily because I need a woman's justification in it (although we could, in theory, have a very interesting psychological discussion over whether or not that is actually true) but because I have a deep respect for a woman's desire to see more than just the physical act of the incident(s), and I've gone to great lengths to provide exactly that. Granted, there are some men capable of providing worthy insight along these lines, but not many. The issue is, of course, that this so-called incident transpires between sisters and I understand that this subject is of very little interest to the female gender in general. That being said, anyone interested in lending their qualified assistance and insight would be appreciated.

I don't often check into the board and I have no idea how to check to see if I have a PM or not... I suppose I'll learn myself how to do exactly that here shortly. Anyways, point is, I'm not sure the standard protocol for initiating contact and/or determining that contact has been initiated, and I've half a mind to just go ahead and post my email address here... but I'm not sure whether that's allowed or not?

Well, unless your new story is written without any mention of colour, neighbour, honour, etc ... getting an editor is rather a moot point isn't it? :)

Are you certain that its the extra u's that is causing the problem? If it is, I would "americanize" the words and drop those extra u's. When I edit for an American, I don't touch add u's and if I were to write for a site that follows US spelling, then I'd remove my own u's for the purposes of the story. It's really up to you ....

I may have a chance this weekend or early next week to look at your story if you want. Left click on my name and select my profile, on the left are options to send a private message or send an email.

I'm not sure if it's different depending on what skin you choose, but to find your own private messages, you have two choices:

1) up on the top of your screen there should be a couple of lines that says "Welcome CrazyCatt, Private Messages Unread: 0, Total: 0"or something like that. Click on Private Messages, it's a link

2) Left Click on User CP (top menu bar) and it will display a Control Panel that has Private Messages as one of your options.

It's biologically impossible for me to offer a female perspective, but I can answer your other questions.

Starting backwards, posting an email address is both "illegal" and a helluva bad idea unless you like tons o'spam, phishing expeditions, and hate mail from the holier-than-thou brigade. The moderator would undoubtedly remove an address in any case. You'll need to check the board periodically for replies to your posts. Checking your PMs is an exercise in simplicity: just look at the upper right hand corner of the screen whenever you log onto the boards; it will show the number of PMs you've received, if any. Mouse click on the notice, and you're in.

As for spellings, you're probably not having troubles because of Canadian (or British, or any other standard form of usage); several of the authors for whom I edit use Canadian spellings without difficulty. BTW, MS-Word will also stop complaining if you tell it to apply Canadian English standards instead of US.

It's not surprising that "Noooo" lights up your grammar checker, since it's not actually a word; technically, neither is "rec-room" but almost everyone will know what you mean, so it shouldn't be a problem (try removing the hyphen and dropping a period after the abbreviation, if you wish); "lego" is a trademark, so it should be capitalized (i.e. Lego).

None of these are big enough issues to enrage the spelling-bot unless you use them an extraordinary number of times. If you're getting rejected because of spelling, my hunch is that there are some other spelling/grammar problems lurking somewhere in your story. A good line edit should solve the problem.

and if you get the honor of working with Miss Rogue, count your blessings. She's the bestest editor in the whole wide world! :)

Well, I'm glad I didn't post my address, then. And I did manage to find my private messages, too!! So I guess I'm two for two ;Þ

On my original submission there were other spelling mistakes that had gotten by me somehow, but only a couple, and I did correct those and resubmit. I just noticed that MS Word didn't like my Canuck english and was wondering if that would be considered incorrect by Lit.

Canadian/U.K. English will not cause a story to be rejected. Nor will extended spellings of the words "Cummmmmmmmmmmmmmming" and "Nooooooooo!"

(you can install a u.k. english dictionary for word)

Such abominations, are acceptable, if improper. (they should always be in exclamatory, or imperative phrasing)

If you cannot find the errors in Word, I would begin searching for homophones, and other similar errors.

Nope, posting ones own email address is not illegal and the moderator :D wouldn't remove it. I wouldn't recommend anyone to do it for the reason you mention CC but look through the old thread and you'll see plenty of instances where someone posted his own email address.

Mea culpa. I've always heard it got the miscreant stoned with pellets of Silly Putty. *second time I've been wrong in my life-gotta break the habit*

you don't really wanna know :D

You know, I always did think it was a prettier way of spelling it... it's got a bit more flourish... and makes me feel French when I read it...

we Americans, I know, we're such dolts

That's what makes your charm and makes you so likeable CC.
I know how being perfect is annoying to people so I always try to be wrong at least once a day. :D

KBate: lol

Well, I didn't use any references to "Cummmmmmmmmmmmmmming"... and it was more like "Noooo" than "Noooooooooooooo" haha! ;Þ

But I get what you mean :)
