Judge Not...

Jayden had met the brother of one of her classmates when she visited her family during a Thanksgiving break, a decorated US Navy SEAL who was ten years older than she. But that did not matter to her. She had been smitten by the quiet and reserved man whose easy smile and kind eyes went totally went against the type of man her father had raised her to believe anyone who would become a soldier was. He had reddish brown hair that was cut short and had hazel eyes that routinely changed color with his moods, and she was so impressed that he stood at a tall 6' 3" and weighted nearly two hundred pounds of pure lean muscle. Over the week she spent with him she had learned that he hated the fact he had to kill those whom wished harm to come to others, but he saw what he did as a way to protect and defend those who could not (or would not) protect and defend themselves. That it was an act of love to do what he was doing. Sacrificing his life and his scared honor to do what he felt was the right thing.

She decided at that moment, she wanted him in her life. And after a year of courtship, they had gotten quietly married since she knew that her father would never approve of the man she had fallen so hard for. Not only was he a Christian 'marionette', he was also politically conservative who had a healthy amount of doubt in the intentions of large and powerful central governments to always keep the best interests of its citizens in mind. But to Jayden all she could see was his gentle kindness and his loving nature. That everything he did in life was dedicated to the great deal of love he had for everyone around him, not out of guilt or a false since of charity.

But the one thing that had really sealed the deal for her was when her sister's grade school students had met him, they loved him. From the moment they saw him, they started crawling all over him, laughing and playing with the big tough Navy SEAL. They could easily see him for the humble and loving man that others just didn't see. They all had been blinded by the outward appearance that he was just a combat veteran with a chest full of metals and ribbons. But they could see what she did when she first met him. He was what many women called the elusive 'quality guy' that many had searched for, but totally missed. Or in Nathaniel's case, used and abused and threw away when they where done with him.

Being married to a Military man had not been easy… But at least for the first part of their marriage he had been able to stay in the States undergoing extensive training exercises that allowed him to come home to her almost every night and weekend. Only during the extended 'training exercises' was he away from her, and when he came home he always made it up to her.

Jayden had waited until after they had gotten married before she had introduced her parents to Nathaniel. Because she knew that they would not much care for the man she had chosen for her husband, but they would have to accept him since he was to late for them to stand in their way. Besides she hoped that the news that she was pregnant with their first grandchild would temper their distaste with her new husband.

Instead her father was furious, and did everything in his power to find ways to come between them while trying to appear supportive. A month into his latest deployment to Iraq, Jayden had been in an auto accident and had to move in with her parents after the doctors ordered her to take it easy. Jayden asked her father to use his influence in an effort to get Nathaniel emergency leave so he could come and stay with her while she was recovering. And he agreed, and appeared to use his political connections to get a message to her husband while he was under a communications black-out. When he returned he apologetically informed his daughter that Nathaniel had refused to return, and that he never wanted to see her again.

Stunned, Jayden still gave birth to their son and named him Nathaniel Isaiah Cohen Spaight. She never filed for divorce, expecting Nathaniel to do that since he had sent such a cold and callous message through her father… But that day had never came and much to her fathers displeasure she never attempted to file for divorce herself, stubbornly saying that she did not believe in divorce and that if Nathaniel really wanted nothing more to do with her… He would have to pay for it, and show his face to ask for it.

Two years later when her father died from a massive coronary, Jayden had been shocked to discover that Nathaniel had not abandoned her and their unborn son. Instead she learned form her mother that her father had informed him that she had lost their unborn child thanks to the stresses brought on by his being deployed to Iraq 'killing babies' and 'spreading American imperialism' instead of being there with her when she needed him the most. And that she never wanted to see him again.

After learning this, Jayden started looking for her husband and contacted her sister-in-law and the US Navy in an effort to try and find him, only to learn that Nathaniel had just except retirement and a medical discharge six months prior. Jayden also learned that he had been injured during a major firefight with insurgents that had made it on the evening news, combined with having suffered an emotional breakdown related to when he had been informed that his wife wanted nothing to do with him anymore. Her sister-in-law at first was not to keen on helping her, upset with the things that she had been told by Jayden's father. After realizing that both Jayden and Nathaniel had been victims of such a horrible act, she informed Jayden that her brother was getting VA disability checks, and was being treated by the VA on a regular basis.

After finding this out, she started trying to get information from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the only way she could get access to the information she wanted was to get a job with the VA. This had allowed her a chance to find out where his disability checks were being sent to, and get transferred to the clinic he was being treated. Jayden then asked her sister to watch after little Nate while she went to see the man who was still her husband in everything including name.

She discovered that he was living in a small room at a rundown motel that was within walking distance of the VA Clinic he was receiving medical care. She spent the day asking around about Nathaniel, trying to find out as much information about him as she could… Hoping that he didn’t hate her for what her father had done. Instead she had known he had always been a quiet and reserved man, whom had become a recluse. He only left the room for his appointments, for doing what ever shopping that he needed to do, and to attend the small local church that ministered to the homeless and destitute.

Talking with the man who rented out the room to Nathaniel, she learned that he still grieved for the 'loss' of their unborn child, and the fact that his wife never wanted to see him again. And much to her surprise, he recognized her from the drawings and pictures that he had seen in Nathaniel's room.

"You are her aren't you?" the elderly motel manager asked looking deeply into Jayden's bright green eyes. "He has drawn pictures of you, and the child he said you lost because of him."

"Yes," Jayden said in a soft voice. "I did not loose our baby, my father lied to him and me… I… I came looking for him as soon as I learned the truth. I have spent the past month hunting for him… Doing everything I can to look for my husband, to find the father of my son so I can finally bring him home."

"And you have found him," the manager said smiling. "He has been… Lost, and in so much pain. It breaks our hearts to see him like this. We worry for him so. It will not be easy to bring him back home, but he can be brought home. If you still love him, you can find him. Because we all know that he still loves you. It is in his eyes when he talks about you."

"Thank you," Jayden said softly. "Can you give me a key to his room?"

The manager silently slid the key across the counter and nodded before he gave her a reassuring smile and walked back into his office. Leaving her alone in the small lobby looking at the key in her hand, with the thoughts of everything she had been able to learn in the past month about her Husband, about how her father lies had such a horrible affect on three people that had loved one another so very, very much.

Jayden walked with purpose to the room that her husband had been renting for the past year, looking attentively at the surroundings. Amazed that what had at one time been a high class hotel was now so rundown. The hallway had several people sleeping in the recesses, and she could tell that the elderly couple who owned the hotel just did not have the heart to run them off. She stood in front of her husband's room, and very slowly and quietly opened it.

She slowly entered the darkened room, and allowed her eyes to adjust to the light provided by the dim light of the screen of a computer that was set up at the small desk against the wall that illuminated the sleeping form of Nathaniel, who was sprawled haphazardly across the bed. His nearly nude form brought back memories that made her smile, but seeing the fresh scars across the right side of his chest and shoulder made her frown and filled her with dread. Almost as much dread as she saw the drawer of the nightstand that was still extended, and full of medicine bottles. She quietly picked through them, seeing the names of powerful painkillers, sleep aids and those meds that would counter-act their side effects.

The room was full of drawings and pictures of the two of them, interspaced by drawings of her and a child that she could easily recognize as having been drawn by his own hand. She smiled as she saw one of his sketchbooks laying at his side. He had been drawing something when he passed out. She very gently sat down on the bed beside him, and wiped away the tears she realized that she had started to shed when she saw him like this.

His once short reddish brown hair was now long, longer than she had thought he would ever want to wear it… It was now streaked with premature grey at his temples, and easily touched the top of his shoulders and cascaded across his face hiding the kind eyes she had fallen in love with. She very gently pushed the hair back so she could see his sleeping face. And she had to admit that she liked how he looked with the neat goa-tee that he had grown, and felt that his current look would appear a lot better if he would shave and clean up just a little bit.

The room was laid out like a small studio apartment, filled with his few meager possessions. She could see his dress uniform full of his medals and ribbons hanging in the closet with the rest of his uniforms and equipment neatly stacked and stored. The room had a small kitchenette off to the side with the adjoining bathroom. She had to suppress the smile when she saw the empty containers of Chinese food in the wastebasket. Some things would never change since his favorite dish while they where together had been General Tso's chicken.

Seeing him sleeping so deeply, open and vulnerable reminded her of all their times together. Her strong, straight forward and 'straight-laced' SEAL had always put her needs ahead of his own. He was almost like a big puppy dog, always hanging on to her every word and desire. It was no wonder he fell apart when he thought she did not want anything to do with him anymore.

She could tell it would take a strong hand to bring him back, and as much as she loved this man she was not about to fail bringing him home. No matter what it would take, she was going to bring him back home starting tonight.

'Twilight of Innocence, Prologue'

When did the world die? This is a question many people have asked over the past three years since the first nuclear exchange that changed very shape of the affairs of the world. The year is 2009, and the world has been locked in a horrible world wide war that many would like to say started in 2000. But others with much better memories say it started in 1989. Back when it really looked as if the Cold War was about to end with the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe…

But that was not meant to be. A coup in the middle of 1989 saw the Gorbachev regime brought down, and the end of the Sinatra Doctrine when the Red Army units garrisoning East Germany and the rest of Eastern Europe put down pro-democratic protesters and reformers. During that horrible winter of 1989 the West watched in horror as the Soviet Union reinforced its hegemony with a brutal iron fist that would inspire the Peoples Republic of China to follow its example in 1993 to put down nearly three hundred pro-democracy demonstrators at Tiananmen Square. In comparison, the world would say that the thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) who went missing during that 'Black Winter' that saw the gentle thaw of the Cold War turn once more into an arctic blizzard.

Thanks to the Black Winter, the first half of the 1990s became the tensest during the history of the Cold War. Even tenser than the period of the Berlin Airlift, a feat that NATO had to be repeat throughout the months of the Black Winter. In August of 1990 Saddam Hussein's Republic of Iraq invaded the Emirate of Kuwait without the approval of the Soviet Union, whom did nothing to stop the US-led coalition of forces to liberate the small oil-producing Persian Gulf country.

The election of Bill Clinton as President of the United States in 1992 saw the continuation of the 'Peace through Strength' policy that had originally been started by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. But President Clinton also pursued a policy of economic engagement with the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. Trade with the Eastern Bloc allowed limited capitalist economic and cultural reforms that greatly benefited the communist countries behind the Iron Curtain.

During the early-1990s saw the creation of a grassroots political organization in the United States based upon progressive populist beliefs that would become known as the Union for a Progressive New America sponsored by an extremely wealthy international financier. Throughout the 1990s and the first years of the early 21st Century the Union for a Progressive New America rapidly grew in power and scope allowing the new political party to win many local and state elections by 2004, including the election of several prominent members to the United States House of Representatives.

NATO found itself spilt over how to deal with the Black Winter, something that had long lasting effects and saw the birth of the Mediterranean Alliance in 1992 during the aftermath of Operation Desert Storm by the French Republic, Italian Republic and Hellenic Republic. These three nations would be joined by Portuguese Republic in 1994, Peoples Democratic Republic of Algeria and the Tunisian Republic in 1995, the Kingdom of Spain in 1998 and finally the Peoples Socialist Republic of Albania in 1999. While initially allied with NATO, the Alliance would slowly start to develop a much more distinct foreign policy. Especially with their policy with the continent of Africa. The African states and the order they joined the Mediterranean Alliance; the Republic of Chad in 1994, the Equatorial Guinea in 1994, the Central African Republic in 1994, the Republic of the Congo in 1995, the Kingdom of Morocco in 1996, the Somali Republic in 1997, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1998, and the Great Socialist Peoples Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in 2000. It was the rapid growth of the Mediterranean Alliance in Africa prompted the United States to create the African Unified Combatant Command.

By the end of the 1990s, luxury goods such as McDonalds, Starbucks, Pepsi, Levis and even Victoria's Secret could be found in stores throughout the Eastern Bloc. But the prosperity of the 1990s led to decadence in the East as well as the West. A brewing border dispute between the USSR and PRC spurred on by leaders dissatisfied with the changes and reforms exploded into the Sino-Soviet Border War in August of 2000. The Sino-Soviet War would end up drawing the rest of Warsaw Pact when the fighting turned against the Soviet Union mid-2001. By early 2002 the Sino-Soviet War had become a meat grinder for the Pact forces (especially the units of the NVA der DDR) whom where finding themselves being used as cannon fodder.

The DDR and other Warsaw Pact countries started to turn against their Soviet masters, and covertly opened negotiations with their counterparts inside NATO.

In 2003 the Soviets demanded another round of reinforcements from their Warsaw Pact allies, who balked at the thought of sending more troops into the Sino-Soviet frontier. 9 September 2003, three nearly bloodless coups where carried out. Overthrowing the Soviet sponsored governments that controlled the German Democratic Republic and Hungarian Peoples Republic. But the coup attempt in the Polish Peoples Republic failed thanks to the Soviet KGB intercepting the majority of conspirators allowing the majority of Poland to remain in the hands of the Polish central communist government and Soviet Occupation forces plunging the country into chaos as local uprisings go off without central authorities while government opposition maintained a cohesive control that nearly stomped out the rebellion. If not for the successful uprising in the DDR with the aid of the Federal Republic of Germany (and having the support of nearly every level of the East German government) pushing the occupying Soviet Forces in Germany out of the nation, the Polish uprising would have been a total failure.

The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic feared the possible reunification of the two German states swore its continued allegiance to the Warsaw Pact, and launched a major offensive to support the beleaguered Soviet forces. The entrance of Czechoslovak forces into East Germany prompted the US and British forces in West Germany to launch their own counter-assault against the Czechoslovak and Polish forces currently engaged in combat.

The Peoples Republic of Bulgaria and the Socialist Republic of Romania mobilized to reinforce the Soviets and Czechoslovak forces fighting against NATO and the turncoat German and Polish forces in the German Democratic Republic and the Polish Peoples Republic.

After the mobilization of their Balkan neighbors to enter into the conflict in Eastern Europe prompted the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia joined NATO alliance. Which along with skirmishes between Bulgarian and Turkish forces would prompt the Mediterranean Alliance to at first to enter a state of armed neutrality that would become a state of war when they refused to allow NATO to reinforce the Republic of Turkey in the early part of 2004 after the Soviets started to appear as if they where going to prepare to launch an all out offensive into Southwest Asia in an effort to cut NATO's access to Middle East Oil Fields.

Thanks to this, the war in Europe and Central Asia had spread to the Middle East and Africa prompting the United States Congress to authorize the reactivation of the Draft and the creation of the wartime Army of the United States to defend the country. All throughout the later years of the 1990s political pressure had created the Evaluation of Female Combat Personnel Program to test the possibility of American women in combat or combat support positions that had proven successful. Thus when the Congress passed the new Draft legislation in 2004 both men and women between the ages of 18 to 35 had found that they were eligible for the draft equally. This gave a grassroots support for both protestors and political pundits whom where associated with the 'Union for a Progressive New America' to speak out, support and organize groups whose only reason to exist was to resist both the war and the draft.

By mid-2006 the first uses of nuclear weapons was reported during the Sino-Soviet conflict in Central Asia and quickly followed when the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan went nuclear when the two states decided to finally end the nearly-half century state of war that had existed between them that left both states desolate wastelands that would soon be mirrored in other parts of the world. The use of nuclear weapons in the Western Hemisphere was much more limited, with the unspoken agreement between the three superpowers limited themselves to the use of only tactical nuclear warheads on the battlefields.

In mid-2007 the first and only use of strategic nuclear weapons occurred on the early morning of Wednesday 4 July 2007 with the launch of a surgical strike by the Soviet Union in an attempt to knock the United States out of the War. The surviving media would call this surprise nuclear attack that hit Washington DC and select military targets in the Continental United States as the 'Independence Day Massacre.'

Throughout 2008 the war continued in sporadic offenses and counter-offenses that occurred between attempts by the participants in an effort to regain internal control over their homelands. Back in the United States the Union for a Progressive New America had launched an attempt to overthrow the surviving federal and state governments using the distraction of the nuclear exchanges of the 'Independence Day Massacre' as cover for their attempt. Many elements of the surviving media conglomerates at first ignored the activities of the 'Progressive New America' but would soon find themselves even focus of the organizations attempts to assert complete and total control over every aspect of the day-to-day lives of the areas under their control.

The Federal Government attempted to keep the fighting between it and the 'Union for a Progressive New America' from getting to much coverage fearing that it would weaken its ability to maintain control over those areas still within its sphere of control and influence. But after reports of the atrocities that where being carried out in the seat of the Union's power (Seattle, WA), the Federal Government had to go public with the covert war that had started in the aftermath of the 'Independence Day Massacre'.

By mid-2009 the war had finally ground to a halt on all fronts as all of the participants where just too over extended, and incapable of even keeping their own homelands secure from domestic outlaw elements. Thus when the final offensive of the war fizzled, and many found themselves cut off and stranded as strangers in strange lands having to find their own way home.

And this… This is the story of two such people.

One is a soldier, and the other a field correspondent of one of the last operating international news agencies. Two very different people thrust together during a chaotic battle. Forced together with each other's lives in the others hands. They have said that Love has been born from less...

This almost qualifies as The Question, doesn't it? This is turning out to be a night for good fishing.

Oh you put it in the right place, we're just waiting for the right person to help you. Just sit tight, she'll be along shortly.

I'm sorry dude-- they're being jerks.

The odds of finding a writing partner here are pretty slim, truthfully.

Depending on what kind of writing you want to do-- if you have a complete plot in mind, you need to buckle down and write. If you want some open-ended exploration and lots of gratuitous internet sex, you can try posting your ideas in the sexual roleplay forums.

Best of luck!

I PM'ed the gentleman last night, Stella. He seems like a nice guy. I don't think he'll take offense.

I agree, Stella and it's too bad people are being silly. I've always enjoyed writing stories with others from alternating POVs. While I am able to write two points of view within the same story (and I do it very well on my own) I would require spontaneity from any writing partner.

I have written stories with others and it has worked best, Spake, when you start a story idea, let your partner respond naturally to what you write to him/her and vice versa. If you have all the characters and story worked out ahead of time, writing with with you would be a nightmare. This is NOT a dig, I am just being honest in my opinion. :)

A writing partner found me here--although I wouldn't disagree that it is rather rare. There are other successful writing partnership on this site, including regular posters to the forum. So, it can be done.

If you want one from here, I'd suggest you post some stories (if you haven't already done so) showing your preferred catagories, writing style, and heat level; do quite a bit of reading of the works of others here; and then make direct proposals to authors you think you'd write well with.

That worked well in my case. My coauthor (Sabb) and I write similarly enough under the name Shabbu that we're published and reviewers don't comment on being able to tell which of us contributed what to the story, and everything we've published together has been given good reviews in the paying market (like the snippet in my sig line).

We do have a method in our writing. Most of our works have jumped out at us from our daily e-mail chats (we live a world apart). One of us then will extract a paragraph or an idea and work up a story beginning. We usually each take a character and trade voices back in forth in separate sections/chapters, progressing the story from just nubs of ideas and playing off each other. Then I go back over the whole thing and make it all fit--resolve all of the loose ends and throw away extraneous subplots. My partner edits that and then I edit again, and we start sharing cover images until we settle on something. Our real struggles have been in agreeing where a story is to go. We both go for the exotic locale and favor the literary. Sabb goes more for the simple (but more subplots) and the romantic, and I go more for the heat, twists in the main plot, and unexpected/contrary, not necessarily happy-ever-after ending. One of us is pretty dominant and also writes and delivers text faster, though, so disagreements don't go for very long. (smile)

Thank you. I had ideas for several stories and the basic ideas about what the characters motivations would be... I have a basic idea of where I want to story to go, but that's about it... i try to keep the stories fluid and flowing to go where the characters decide they want to go. I don't know if that makes sense, but when i write the characters are the ones who take the story to the end... But i haven't felt that I can really give female characters the complete... well, soul that they deserve. Thus my need to find a female writing partner to keep my work honest. And i would want my writing partner to bring her own views and ideas for the characters as well to the story... that's what helps make a story more full and satisfying. hell, the last time i was able to get a writing partner we wrote something like two hundred pages in just under two weeks.

It's why i decided to join up here, in hopes of finding someone to write with, and find friends to share ideas and talk with. :)

That's the kind of thing i'm looking for... someone to work with that can play off each other and make the stories more realistic and multi-dimenisional.
