I'm trying to find this story. I thought googling "soft yellow" would give me some luck but it was not to be. Anyhow, the story is about someone who inherits a portal-type device that lets him travel to other worlds. One such world is a sort of medieval land. The protagonist trades some clothing for large quantities of "soft yellow" (aka gold), which the people place almost no value on. At one point he takes a blind (or maybe just very sight-impaired) girl home with him, has a doctor give her eye surgery, and then returns her, much to the joy of the people living there. The doctor accepts some diamond rings in trade for this (also from this world), but they turn out not to be diamonds at all but rather something that the appraiser had never seen before. The protagonist catches the doctor trying to follow them, but nothing comes of it.
