Are you thinking about The Puppet Masters which was a short novel by Heinlein, back from the 50s. It has the elements of space slugs controlling humans, between the shoulders (a sharp slap on the back could defeat the earlier versions), flying saucers, aliens controlled in the saucers, and a romance story. Obviously not on this site. I read it back in the 60s or 70s in a trilogy edition with a novel called Waldo.
