This longish tale takes place over the space of about a year, chronicling the changing relationship between Brad, a 19-20 year old American football player at an indeterminate well-known state university, and his younger sister Emily, an 18 year old (as per the rules of Lit, nothing sexual happens between them until she is definitively 18) high school graduate who decides to attend the same state university and try for the cheerleading squad. Their relationship becomes increasingly intimate and “touchy” on the excuse that it helps him to play more proficiently.

Their relationship occasionally seemed to me to be based a little too firmly on sexual attraction, but that’s probably just my lack of experience with sexual attraction coloring my interpretation. It is made clear at many points in the story that their attraction has deep emotional and historical roots, and while I might have wished that these roots could have been explored more deeply rather than simply referenced, I nevertheless enjoyed getting to hear their story.

It is, however, worth mentioning that, at least at the beginning of the story, Brad has a steady(ish) girlfriend. She breaks up with him for unrelated reasons before anything serious occurs between him and Emily, and therefore it does not violate my rule about “strict monogamy,” but it still feels worth mentioning. More critically, the story seems to subscribe a little bit to the notion that “serial monogamy is perfectly fine for guys but not for girls.” It’s not huge, but Emily is given considerable credit for being a virgin, and Brad never gets any crap for quite emphatically not being one. 8/10.
