I remember reading a story about a guy who trains security dogs (possibly as a result of esp, but not sure) and, helps a girl living at an orphanage.
I don't think they got on at first.
I think he also grew up in a bad situation (possibly dad-based) and prefers dogs to people.
The help he provides I believe is to do with a bad guy(s).
I can't tell you when I read this, only that these are the only things I remember about it.
