Looking for a story about a Loving Wife who takes on a lover and when discovered refuses to give up lover

I'm hazy on some of the details but I recall the LW is unrepentant and determined to continue with her affair. The husband ultimately leaves and goes to a university (I seem to remember it was an English "red brick" university such as Oxford, Cambridge etc.) and he becomes a professor. I seem to remember he meets and develops a relationship with a fellow professor. The LW visits and attempts to reignite the relationship. Any thoughts on which story this may be will be very welcome.
