I am looking for a story I have read two times in the past.
The story I am looking for is from the Science Fiction section.
Plot summary.
A small human scouting / expeditionary force is dropped onto a planet that is contested with a species that are cat like humanoids. The planet is not inhabited by either human or cat-people other than small military presences.
After getting shot down and crashing the main character is alone and stumbles onto a group of cat-girls. There is a fight and he ends up killing the leader and taking the other 3 prisoner.They end up working together to survive. They find an old set of ruins from long past up on a hill and use this estate like location as their home-base. The ruins have fruit trees and a spring or small stream dammed up into a pool. Living quarters, workshops and stables.
They come across some of the primitive natives and end up helping them to some degree.They also come across another threat, a space-faring aquatic species who has just started attacking both human and cat-people planets. Nothing is really known about them as they have never been seen, just the aftermath of their attacks.
The natives, cat-people and human work together after being attacked by the aquatics. They plan an assault on the aquatic foes spaceship that has landed in a meadow / open area by a river. During the battle the human is able to enter the water filled ship and ends up prevailing in the battle.
They retreat to their estate and get on with living. Some time later a military contingent arrives with both humans and cat-people who are now allied against the aquatic foe. They human and his three cat-people wives decide to stay on this planet and the main character ends up being made planetary governor.
Does anybody remember this story? - an author or tittle would be appreciated and a link would absolutely make my day. I tried Perplexity AI but they could not find it. I also looked a bit on the Internet Archive without result as I have no idea when I last read it.
