As title pretty much, I'm looking for a guy to chat with on msn. It's my day off and I'm feeling a bit bored and lonely.
Not wanting some timewaster who can't type properly and whose contributions generally consist of "lemme see ur webcam!!!111"
So yeah, somebody who can actually hold a decent conversation - I'm starting to despair of actually finding some maturity on the net!
PM me for my address if you feel like changing my mind on that

Hmmm...no webcam eh? let's see, what else to talk about...I think you're a student type, yes?

Do you think people are inherently selfish, and only looking out for themselves, or is there a deepseated moral imperative to try to help others?

PM box

Your message box is full.....can't send you anything.

My MSN is in my profile if you want to chat now.

Full up pm box..

Hope you can find a chat buddy. If not my address is in my profile, would enjoy hearing from you.

Rob

I have returned and am clearing out my PMs now (crikey that's a lot of messages  )

As to the philosophical question....hmm I think the more deep-rooted subconcsious of the two would be inherently selfish.... but that the imperative to help each other is one of the things that sets us as humans apart from other animals. I remember studying in philosophy something about how people fit into groups - egoist, utilitarian and religious authoritarian, and I seem to remember then that when we looked at moral issues egoists tended to be the biggest groups realistically, but that's not really an inherent thing, it's a choice thing.

Philosophy time :D

ooo good stuff...I like the biological aspect to this, to take it out of the realm of pure cultural and environmental factors...if there were no selfishness involved, then there would be no survival of the individual, since there are always others who could be helped in preference to us..but if there was no helping others, then there would be no ability to join forces to create larger societies and improve the chance for survival of the species...

And of course religion plays an important role here, usually on the helping others aspect..."if you turn the other cheek, you can have everlasting life..." BF Skinner would be proud :)

What a treat it would be to be your choice ... give it a thought...

You mean the philosophy didn't scare you off? :D
(I like your user title thing by the way)

I think you and I are probably quite in agreement on that. :)
Who's BF Skinner?

haha. I was going to make an offer to turn your opinion, but I'm seriously out-philosophied. I've never been much of a philosophy scholar, but I can hold up my end in a conversation. I'm around tonight. Feel free to drop me a line and see if we can't get into a far-reaching moralistic and sociological debate.

Skinner was a psychologist who studied how positive reinforcement could lead to subjects altering their behavior. I don't know that he tried this per se, but e.g. buying jewelry in reward for sexual favors would be something Skinner would recommend to increase the likelihood of getting said sexual favors.

Had a bunch of excellent responses to this so am feeling less cynical about guys online. Nobody seems to be really awake right now though so if anybody is feeling bored?

Reminder though - I specified msn and meant it so asking me to chat on yahoo or AIM or whatever is a waste of time.
