About an hour ago I put my finger up (at an auction you perverts!) and bought my first car!

It's SO joy! It's a 1988 Daihatsu Rocky 2.8L Diesel 4WD with Power Steering, Air Con, Removable hardtop, and all the fruit (it was a limited addition, so it's got the lot - but it needs a new stereo). And it was an absolute steal! I know for a fact that I could sell it tomorrow for about $3000 profit. I'm so stoked!

Only problem is that it will take up every last cent I have and I can't get finance because I'm just a lowly temp. So I've gone from being extremely cashed up to being poorer than an ugly prostitute. :) Oh well... at least I can drive to the social security office. :)

Jesus I'm happy!

MADDOG!!!

Good buy Maddog, I've had my 2.8 Turbo Diesol, for about ten years now, with no problems. Which considering the price of Daihatsu parts over here is lucky.

If you've got the solid rear door, watch out for the hinge pins. The weight of the door snaps them off. They're £150.00 to replace with the genuine Daihatsu bits. So most of us stick big bolts through them now.

Hey Myrrdin, you have a Rocky too? Pretty cool, huh? :) I'd never actually heard of them before I saw this one, and I've only seen one on the road. Like I said, mines a limited addition. It does have the solid read door - which is kind of a down side, because that means that if I do take the roof off it will have a big door sticking up. That's why I don't think the roof is meant to come off in the back, even though I know it can.

Do you know, is it possible to buy a half door and modify the glass canopy slightly to allow the roof to come off? Or is that too much hassle and expense anyway?

Is this the money you were going to put in the stock market back in summer to invest? hmmmm?

Oh, and I know that in saying this I have buggered it up, but that was post number 666. :) Me so horny.

Yes Cheyenne :( I'm so bad. But I HAD to buy a car! I needed one! I didn't need to spend so much, but you should see this thing. It has an artifical horizen on the dash board and the rear seat folds down into a bed! A BED for crying out loud!

But you know what? Before I bought it, I looked it up on a website and got a market value, and that model sells for between $9000 and $11,000, and I got it for a LOT less than that. This could actually be a really good investment. Better than the stock market with the money I had to play with.

So I'm not that bad after all. :) But I promise, I'll be more responsible with my next million. :)

Keep telling yourself that, Maddog! :) Cars aren't investments unless they are collectible classics in almost perfect condition, I believe. All others depreciate rapidly.

*End of finance lesson for the day.*

Hey! I'm not stupid! I know if I hold it for too long my profit will slip, but even after 12 months I think I'll break even at worst. But who says I'll even wait that long? This car was DIRT cheap. I mean seriously undervalued - it was a repossesion. I could sell it in a month and pick up a few grand without any worries at all. :) Plus, the other cars there were cheap as well. I know there are restictions and stuff, but it occured to me that if I can find even 10 bargains a year and make $3000-4000 profit on each, pretty soon I'm a spoilt little rich kid. :)

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you were stupid. Good luck with your car.

No Cheyenne! I didn't take it that way, promise. :) Don't even worry about it gorgeous. :)

I am the only one thinkin thank gawd I don't live in his continent? Just kidding darlin, congratuladions. The first car is always wonderful, like the first time you have sex, or the first time you have sex in your first car. Enjoy!

Welcome to the ranks of the mobile, MADDOG. Now all you have to worry about is gas, oil, repairs, insurance, traffic, accidents, drunk drivers, and don't forget the kangaroo crossings.

A bed? His car has a a fold down to a bed and no one commented on it? I am amazed, stunned and a wee bit disappointed.

Sorry, I've never seen one with the top off. Over here we're more concerned with keeping the weather out, than letting it in.
If you go for the open air option, you might wanna invest in a steering lock, otherwise your investment might 'roll' away in the night.
