... do you like 'em or hate 'em ???

I'm kinda ambigous.

I gotta spend about 9 hours in the car tomorrow. (4 1/2 in the morning, 4 1/2 in the evening)

That'll be 800kms to travel.

On the one hand it's of course very exhausting. At the end of the day, you're just done and want to see your bed.
Also, I'm not the best driver and very easily get lost in big cities (I'm gonna drive to a big city). So finding the right way can be a bitch. Then there's the weather to be considered. If it'S gonna rain or maybe even freeze in the evening driving is dangerous and even longer.

BUT I still love those trips, because being in my car, just me and myself, I can think of a hundred of things, really kinda relaxing (most of the time will be on the highway, so that's not so challenging in terms of driving). I also like to sing aloud in the car to my most favourite cd's and the songs on the radio.

Then I like to go real fast for short times. (In germany there's no general speed limit on highways) My little car only makes 180km/h's but that's enough for me.

So, what about you? You like being in the car for a long time, or do you absolutely hate the ten-minute-trips to the next supermarket???

I looooooooooooooooooooove being in the car.

Okay, so you wanna know why? The motion of the car stimulates the right side of the brain. That's the artist side of the brain (therefor the writer side, and so on). It's a trance like state. Gloriously pleasant, like being high.
And I get lots of idea then, too.

Snoop, I don't have a car but don't need one in SF. However, I love driving (and listening to opera full blast whilst traveling alone; the sound system in my car was better than the one at home).

When I lived in Los Angeles I loved driving the freeways (except at rush hour of course). I suppose it matters where you drive. I don't like city driving but freeways and country roads are always a sensual experience for me.

The last long roadtrip I took, I brought the complete set of "The Chronicles of Narnia" on CD, read by the likes of Derek Jacoby and Patrick Stewart. It was two days to drive there and two days back.

It was too short.

(Needless to say, I started with "The Horse and His Boy" ;) )

Hate long road trips when I'm by myself, which is most of them. Road trips with fun can be mucho cool.

I love driving.

Long trips, short trips, any kind of trips.

I've also had the pleasure of driving in Germany on the pretty near un-regulated AutoBahns, many times.

Fast car, good music, middle of the night, clear Autobahn, suits me every time!!

Let's go!

OK! I'm there! :D

I love driving, too. Windows down, sun shining, music pounding. Yep, very good for the soul. Even damned ones. ;)

Love 'em!!!

I have a very fast car with a very good sound system in it. I'm set for hours.

:D

:( I wouldn't like a drive like you are describing. There have been times when I have started in the AM and driven 500 miles, which is the same as 800km, and is not so bad. It seems like it would be better than driving half that distance starting in the evening when I am already tired.

Dita, if I lived in San Francisco, I probably wouldn't drive either. It is the worst place for driving that I know about although I will admit there might be worse places.

I don't even have my license, so I don't drive.

Long walks are nice. Head down to the beach in the summer. Catch the scenery. ;)

Yep, that's good too, but there's nothing like maintaining 100MPH+ (Yes, that's MPH!!) for a long distance in the dark, with next to nothing else on the road(Autobahn) (Motorway) (Freeway)

Glorious!!!!

Got one in May!

Open road, open car, wind in my hair, ears, mouth and up my shorts not to mention the flies.
Hurtling along at 45 mph with no radio, 1" of foam cushion over a solid steel unsprung seat with rock hard suspension for hour after agonising hour.

WHY??? to meet Lou lou, Mat and the rest of the motley crew!

BT can spank me all she likes my bum will be numb for hours after that trip!!!!

I hate driving. I've owned my car for 6 years and put fewer than 40,000 miles on it. I don't like being in one position for hours, and for some reason, when I start on long car trips, my toenails itch...pure torture. I'd sell any secrets I had to someone who could stop my toenails from itching!

The key is to find a car that's really fun to drive.

Mine sucks gas like a hog, but couldn't be more fun to drive, so I sacrificed. ;)

I love my car. I think of it as the dogcart. It's just the right size for me, the SO, and what's now approaching 190 pounds of dog in two convenient units.

This past summer my mom and I drive down to Dollywood.
(For those of you who don't know, lol, it's Dolly Parton's theme park.)
Anyways, we loaded up my convertible, (putting the top down first to make sure there was room for it in the trunk with our luggage, LOL) and started our 8 hour drive.

Once we got on the freeway, it was a straight shot for like 3 hours. It was pretty boring, but the scenery was beautiful, and you can never listen to too many Dolly songs. ;)
Aside from my sunburn, the drive was okay, lol.

Had I been alone, I don't think I could have handled it. But since I had some company it was all right. :)

I don't mind driving, as long as I can blast my radio and scream, er, I mean, sing along to the tunes. ;)

I've only got a 10 minute drive to work, and sometimes that doesn't seem long enough. :p
(That might be because I hate work and I don't want to go there... hmm who knows. ;))

Love to drive, love to ride. Nothing like the sunroof back and my favorite CD at full volume.

I put over 35,000 miles on my car for work last year. Have to love to drive to endure that. At least they pay good mileage rates!

I think that would depend on the vehicle and where I'm driving.
Give me a pickup or an SUV so I sit up high enough I can see a little ways ahead of me, and it's in good enough confition I don't have to worry about it breaking down, and I'll drive for days on the highway.

Give me a bike with a comfortable seat and I'll cruise backroads all day.

Give me an RV, my wife naked beside me, and plenty of fuel and you wont ever see me again.

Four years ago I took a 6,000 mile road trip around the US and Canada, most of it on small two-line highways. I drove 300-400 miles a day, pretty much every day, for a month. My eight-year-old son was navigator.

This morning I had a big fight with my darling wife. Half way through the row I realized why I've been so resentful and angry: I want another road trip. If I don't get away soon and spend a few weeks alone (or alone with with Sub Joe junior), things could turn bad.

Selfish Male? Maybe. Just let me loose on the highway for a few weeks every so often, and you won't get hurt. I'll undoubtedly behave myself, and come back to you gentle and kind, like I used to be.

When I'm in the driver's seat and have control o'er the tunes? It's all good.

When I'm not, since I get car-sick easily and thus can't read or write at all for the long ass trip? It gets old real fast.

Two people road trips are also great since it's the perfect number to carry a conversation with. More than one passenger is too distracting to concentrate on the road and hearing someone in the backseat is sometimes hard. But two can have a good run at conversation.

I love to drive by myself, particularly on long trips. I love to drive between Florida and the house in NC when I have the chance to do it by myself. It's almost like running. No endorphins, but I can go inside my head to my own little world and think my crazy little thoughts and dream my crazy little dreams for hours at a time. I love it. :)

My love and I enjoy day trips. Sometimes we have a destination in mind, but often we just go for a drive and read stories (usually mine) to one another, stopping whenever we fancy.

We enjoy longer journeys too, but not so much as the shorter, more spontaneous trips. When we can, we take the back roads. When we're on the interstate, that's us in the slow lane with the cruise set on the speed limit, giggling and pointing, munching Boston baked beans and bickering over whether to listen to Meat Loaf or Cyndi Lauper next. The one with her bare feet out the window sometimes; that's me. Like almost anything, the company makes the occasion. We may not get there as fast as others- but it always seems like we did!

On the flip side, I'm so nervous travelling by myself that I rarely enjoy it.
