Please PM or post here if you would like to join. Those who have PM'd already, add your character(s) now. I'll have the actual thread up in a day or two.

We can use this for OOC discussion and to post char descriptions.

I'd really like everyone to work hard on their posts to make them literate and full of description. I know at times the action doesn't lend itself to that, but I see this as a more leisurely thread so we have time to really sink our teeth into it. I'll be acting as the GM if you will, but if you have ideas for directions where this can go once we get started, or ways to better integrate your char, or introduce subplots, please, let me know.

This is a steampunk London. I'm thinking the new Sherlock Holmes movie, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the flashbacks in the TV show Sanctuary as far as look and feel. PLUS There are all manner of supernatural things lurking under the surface. Magic is difficult in this world, you need incantations and inscriptions and scrolls and years of study.

However, some humans have 'wild magic' that they can tap into and use, but it isn't very powerful. And those with wild magic usually have one power, like healing, or speaking to ghosts, or foretelling the future. Also, supernatural beings and those with wild magic or similar gifts are on the down low. The general populace has no idea these things exist. I have plans for vampires in this plot, which may or may not take a awhile to enter the plot. If you have a vampire, PM me with info and I can get back to you when we get the vampire part.

You can play an historical or literary figure from this time period, if you like. Or bring in a character of your own. Post char info and we can tweak it if necessary. If you were in this thread before--remind me. I find that 3-4 chars max is manageable for most people if you want to have that many. Two is probably best. We can see. There also will be NPCs or cameo roles. If someone wants to pick up one of these while we need that, that's fine.

Use wikipedia for historical info. But since it's a steampunk world, we have some wiggle room. A lot of wiggle room, in fact. The Ripper murders took place around 1888, but a decade either way is fine. Talk to me, we can work things out.

The set up is that there have been murders in Whitechapel (by Jack the Ripper), the police are hard at work to find the murderer. But the grisly nature has piqued the interest of a certain group of people dedicated to protecting the general populace from the supernatural threats that they aren't even aware of. There is a wealthy benefactress who manages this group that calls itself The Shield. She is convinced that something far darker is going on and means to stop it. There is also a gypsy camp at the edge of London which may or may not figure into this. Depends on what other chars we have. I was planning on using a gypsy girl as a plot device if I need one.

Once we introduce our players, I'll start the thread.

Name:

Backstory:
Anything else we should know:

Name: (Countess) Zahlena Deswa
Age: My dear, it's impolite to ask such a thing of a lady (but she looks to be a very attractive mid to late 30s)
Physical Description: Tall for a woman, auburn haired, green eyes flecked with gold. She is usually not the most beautiful woman in the room, but many would say she is. She is always the most fascinating one. It is more the whole pkg, the way she carries herself. Her figure is good. She has a sensuality about her that is probably what makes people see her as desirable. She looks like a woman who knows secrets. She dresses in the height of fashion and favors Parisienne styles.
Special Abilities if any: Knows 'women's magic' (ie can tell the sex of the child a pregnant woman is carrying, love spells and things like that, reads tarot, can cast horoscopes, she has learned a little of the sorcerer's art. She can make talismans for protection or to promote luck. She speaks many languages. French being her favorite.
Backstory: Her people were from Circassia, but fled to Turkey during the diaspora in in the 1850-60s when the Russians used scorched earth tactics to defeat them. Hence, she hates Russians. She has lived in many places throughout the middle east and Europe. There are all sorts of rumors about her: that she was married before in Germany and killed her husband and possibly her children. That she danced naked on stage at a private club in Paris. That she is really a man. (This one in particular made her lose her usual decorum as she laughed so hard, she cried.) That she was a concubine in a sultan's harem. The rumors range from the nearly believable to the ludicrous. Those with half a brain chalk the rumors up to jealousy since Zahlena does not suffer fools lightly and balks at playing society's games unless she can get something from it. She does seem to have an unlimited supply of wealth and that smooths over much of what might might call her scandalous past or current behaviors. This enables her to go about the business of The Shield with impunity. She has had many lovers, men of all ages, and a few women too (it's rumoured). She does not have affairs for love, but for what she can get out of it. Power, influence, money, or just damned good sex.

Anything else we should know:
London's Shield is part of a much larger multinational organizational that has existed in some form or another for centuries. Zahlena is the current leader.

Rebekah Mclean ~ White Chapel

Name: Rebekah Mclean
Age: Early 20’s
Physical Description: A tall 5’9 Rebekah is slender and toned at only 120lbs from regular exercise. Her bright red hair is cut just above her shoulders and holds a loose curl. She has a small chest and narrow waist that when coupled with her seemingly constant dirty knees lead many to find her unattractive and not quite feminine.
Special Abilities if any: Rebekah is an earth witch. Her magic is a slow process of combining plants and herbs over her cooking hearth to create a charm or curse. Although not as quick as the wild magic socerers are able to tap Rebekah feels that earth magic is easier on the soul and by far the most potent if you have the knoweldge.
Backstory: Growing up in part of London’s poverty district Rebekah’s family always had trouble making ends meet. When times where tough her father, a skilled earth witch and Rebekak’s teacher, would create charms for the upper class to make money. It was only small, white charms to hide acne, or curl a womans straight hair and easily accepted until a string of babies died without a cause. The somewhat superstitious locals blamed the Mclean’s for bringing this epidemic and burnt their home to the ground. Only a 15 year old Rebekah survived.
Anything else we should know: Rebekah now lives in White chapel where the rent is cheaper because of the local whores. She runs a little store selling soap. Although a new thing her soap is of outstanding quality even if people don’t understand its because of supernatural additives.

Dr Henry Jekyll

Name: Dr Henry Jekyll

Age: Mid-30s

Physical Description: Jekyll is of average height, around 5'8", with a slim build, fair hair and a sickly complexion. However, when suffering from his... affliction, he can look quite different indeed.

Special Abilities if any: Dr Jekyll can transform into a dangerous alter ego called Edward Hyde (though he rarely does so by choice.) Hyde possesses great speed, strength and durability.

Backstory: In an effort to separate the good and evil sides of himself, Henry Jekyll subjected himself to numerous experiments and created an elixir that let him change into the monstrous Mr Hyde. At first, Jekyll enjoyed the freedom that the amoral Hyde granted him, but something went terribly wrong. He soon found that he no longer needed the potion in order to change and that Hyde was totally uncontrollable. With the police chasing Hyde for a number of violent crimes, including murder, the psychopathic beast chose suicide over prison, killing both himself and Dr Jekyll.

At least, that's what the papers wrote. For how were they to know that Hyde had faked his death and soon made passage to the Continent, hiding out in numerous European cities until he was finally tracked down to a suburb of Paris. He was eventually restrained and representatives of London's Shield offered him a choice: execution or working for the organisation. Hyde chose the lesser of two evils.

Since then, Dr Jekyll has been able to regain some semblance of control. A naturally nervous man, he is nonetheless a useful scientific mind. He still struggles daily, however, with the voice inside his head, just waiting for a chance to break free.

Anything else we should know: Dr Jekyll is largely harmless, though his general uneasiness in social gatherings can make him difficult to interact with.

Edward Hyde is a racist, misogynistic, violent sociopath who will think little of breaking your jaw just for looking at him the wrong way. But he is also devious and cunning. Regardless, he should be approached with caution or preferably not at all.

These look great. Thanks.

Let's just say that Hyde isn't quite so horrible looking that he can't walk down the street without people thinking he's a monster. More of a very big man. I think the Shield may think Hyde has committed the murders at first.

Hmmm that would make a lovely plot device. But does that mean Deevo isn't a member of the Shield and on that note are any of us members of Shield because it could be quite easy for us to meet up investigating a new murder and be invited in then.

But your the GM i'm happy to run with the story.

P.S. Hi Deevo, looking forward to writing with you again

Hey Silva!

That's cool, we can have Hyde just be a large, rather aggressive and intimidating looking fellow.

Silva makes a good point - should Jekyll be a member of Shield at that point, or should I change his backstory a bit?

Sounds like a cool RP.

Name: Georgette Reinaldi
Age: 25
Physical Description: [ http://i52.tinypic.com/6ohkyr.jpg ]
Georgette is most recognized by her short cut reddish brown hair and bright green eyes. Her physical form is small, however her attitude helps her 'act' bigger around most people. She stands at just five foot five inches tall, and weighs in under one hundred and twenty pounds. Her signature piece of clothing is a knee length split tailed crimson jacket. Underneath she wears a pair of gray pants, and a similarly coloured gray corset top. Under that a simple white blouse with ruffle tie. Often she carries a rifle slung over her shoulder, and a sword on her hip.
Special Abilities if any: Increased perception, fast moving and great aim. Although kept secret she has a wild energy, the ability to create blinding natural light, but this causes her to weaken substantially.
Backstory: Georgette Reinaldi has traveled the world since she was only fourteen. Her father was a soldier in the King's Navy, and her mother died during childbirth. Getting shipped around was not a new experience. When she turned sixteen she was sent to a refining school in London where she studied for several years. At the age of twenty she found her way to the London Trade and Adventure Company where she has served ever since.
Anything else we should know: Although not the strongest, Georgette has a mean aim and is not afraid to show people her skills with a scoped rifle.

Johann Regenstein

Name: Johann Regenstein
Age: 27
Physical Description: Johann is 6'11" and weighs 445 pounds, he has honey blond hair and dark blue eyes, apart from being huge, Johann is muscled to the point of looking freakish.
Special Abilities if any:
Backstory: Johann was born and raised in Germany, he was always the odd man out due to his height and when he got offered the chance to become a dock worker in England where nobody would ridicule him due to his height and where he would also earn enough money for food a place to live and clothes with a little bit on the side if he did a few odd jobs. He have been working in the docks for 8 years now, so Johann's English only has a slight accent to it and the work he's been doing have built heavy muscles which he keeps in shape by working even harder.
Anything else we should know: Even if he doesn't look it, Johann has a natural eye for accuracy, but because a normal weapon doesn't fit in his hands, Johann can only display his ability with thrown objects.

Name: Billy McCraik

Age: 25

Physical Description: A somewhat taller than average man at 6'1", his lanky body hides the build of a man who worked for a living. By no means an outstanding specimen of body building, he still has strength. A playful spark hides in bright blue eyes beneath a scruffy, thick head of dark brown hair. His nose seems to be familiar with the business end of a fist with a permanent crook in it from a penchant for upsetting the loudest man in a bar by being louder still. A roving eye and devil-may-care attitude go hand in hand with his sharp wit and quick mind. He speaks in a thick Irish accent tinged with an upbringing in Glasgow.

Special Abilities if any: Though distilled after several generations, Billy's blood holds the power of the Fae. In a sense 'blessed' by the Tuatha De Danann, if his great great great etc. grandfather could be believed. His shillelagh holds a powerful enchantment, and he himself is a good deal more agile and powerful than he looks. He can take a beating that would make the Rock of Gibraltar break in two and still have the lack of sense to keep his mouth shut.

Backstory: Though Billy is a little hesitant to tell his story, he'll mention under his breath that a distant relative had a roll in the hay with The Dagna and over the years, the blood had been distilled enough for a mere mortal to use, i.e., him. He was "recruited" by the Shield after a tussle with one of their agents hunting the same artifact, where his skills and wit could be put to better use on the pain of horrible lingering death in a dark mine for assaulting an officer of a secret organization. It's obvious he loves his family back in Ireland, though he doesn't keep in touch with them much at all these days. He sneaks, provides muscle when needed, and blends in well with the more unpleasant elements of society, on top of being one of the Shield's go to guys for missions where they need someone too dense to give up.

Anything else we should know: His shillelagh, on top of being an attractive walking stick, is hollowed in the end to carry a small sliver of true silver for those instances where blackthorn and its enchantment just aren't enough.

I'm honoured that you made your first Virgin post in my thread Nougat :) Welcome aboard.

I did read through the Wiki but forgot the timelines now. Could we make it after the first three murders? That would have people talking and fearing the shadows

Yes, after the first 3 murders makes sense. We can fudge things a little and have more murders happen than just the 5 if we need to for the plot.

Well it is 5 that we know of, so how many did Scotland Yard not find or covered up?

Just saying that for the storyline, please don't crucify me

There were 13 others (I think--off the top of my head that were pretty grisly but those were not considered done by the ripper.) And I think it was murders 2 and 3, that happened on the same day/night. The first one they think was interrupted and he had to go do a second. For our purposes we can have a few more murders to give us enough to see a pattern, as for location, the ones that did occur make a sort of cross, I think wiki has them plotted on a map.

Murders this horrible would be difficult to cover up, But it's possible that the Shield can investigate some prior murders and see a pattern where the Yard did not, or we can just have more murders happen after those in canon.

What about murders in Europe, Ireland, Scotland...maybe a few in Africa that fit the bill. Our contacts could help up build up more murders than Scotland Yard could.

Just to add in an element not in the actual event.

Hmmm, I was centering these murders right in London because that's where the group (coven? murder? flock?) of vampires is working out of. Perhaps we (Georgette) could discover similar murders some time ago in Ireland which could help give the Shield an idea of what the vamps are trying to do.

Faery blood is involved, but the Shield doesn't know that yet. And so far the vamps have been picking off easy targets. There may have been and probably were earlier murders, maybe they were easier to cover up. Plus The Yard wouldn't put much manpower into the murder of street walkers, not until things got really grisly and the press when to town.

Should I suddenly remember this? Or would it be best to wait until later to throw it in?

Maybe Georgette can discover this with more research, or learn/find something at the hellfire club when we go. Perhaps Dorian will drop a hint.

I'm planning to play Dorian as an NPC unless someone else decides to join us and play him.

Sounds good.

Now, I want to see if this post shows my signature or not. Here goes.

Nougat how on earth did you know that I planned on making Johann dominantly left handed?

And I just got to say, that when I read about Billy I keep thinking of Gambit from X-Men origins: Wolverine

Haven't seen that one yet, but he could be an Irish Gambit. Also, in a word? Skill. And there was only a 50% chance of being wrong, but I'll say skill anyways.

Hahaha good man :)

Well time to go check if I can't make a longer post this time around

Sorry I've been away. I've been sick and haven't had much time. Shall we move things along to morning?

I am planning for just that, but the question remains...where the heck should I go? I don't really have an idea of the place I should be at.
