Explosions Rock London
Thursday, July 07, 2005

LONDON — Multiple explosions shook London on Thursday morning, as a series of seven or eight blasts were reported on the city's subways and buses. Reports of casualties topped 90 but it was unclear how many of those were injured and how many were dead.

"There have been a number of dreadful incidents across London today," said Home Secretary Charles Clarke, Britain's top law enforcement officer. He said there were "terrible injuries."

The near simultaneous explosions came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the G-8 summit was getting underway in Scotland. Initial reports blamed a power surge but speculation that it was a coordinated terrorist attack is strong.

An explosion destroyed a double-decker bus near Russell Square not long after several blasts were reported on London subways, police said. A witness said the entire top deck of the bus was destroyed.

"I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air," Belinda Seabrook told Press Association, the British news agency.

She said the bus was packed with people.

"It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air," she said.

Officials shut down the entire underground network after the explosions. Initial reports blamed a power surge, but officials were not ruling out an intentional attack.

The attacks came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the G-8 summit was getting underway in Scotland.

One witness, Darren Hall, said some passengers emerging from an evacuated subway station and that some passengers had soot and blood on their faces. He told BBC TV that he was evacuated along with others near the major King's Cross station and only afterward heard a blast.

British police reported that there were still no confirmed deaths, but that serious injuries were reported.

There was no immediate official comment from British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was hosting the world's most powerful leaders at Gleneagles, Scotland. It was not clear if the G-8 gathering focusing on climate change and aid for Africa -- but from which Iraq has largely been left off the agenda -- would have to be postponed.

Police said incidents were reported at the Aldgate station near the Liverpool Street railway terminal, Edgware Road and King's Cross in north London, Old Street in the financial district and Russell Square in central London, near the British Museum.

London Ambulance Service said several vehicles had been dispatched to the area near Liverpool Street station.

"We believe there was some sort of explosion. There are some walking wounded at Aldgate," said a spokesman for City of London police, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"We are not sure of the scale of the incident. Reports are still coming in."

Bradley Anderson, a subway passenger, told Sky News that "there was some kind of explosion or something" as his train reached the Edgware Road station in northeast London.

"Everything went black and we collided into some kind of oncoming train," Anderson said.

Simon Corvett, 26, who was on an eastbound train from Edgware Road station, said: "All of sudden there was this massive huge bang."

"It was absolutely deafening and all the windows shattered," he said. "There were just loads of people screaming and the carriages filled with smoke.

"You could see the carriage opposite was completely gutted," he said. "There were some people in real trouble."

Watching on the BBC now and I have to say they have not yet confirmed those numbers in terms of deaths. However, it does sound as if it may reach that or even worse. One hospital has just confirmed 8 criticals, one other said 10 majors. There are 100's of walking wounded.

They have also just said "a number dead at Aldgate".

FUCKING TERRORISTS!!!!!!!!!

My heart is saddened for all those UK friends...you are in my prayers and thoughts... :rose:

how can a benevolent God allow this to keep happening... :(

May God watch over and bless each of our London friends and those that know them. You are in my thoughts and prayers. :rose:

(I don't mean to fight, most especially now, but God didn't do this... asshole terrorists did it. IMHO)

It is so difficult to see some of the folks bloodied, cut etc... this is just so wrong.

Thank you to all of our friends around the world for their words and thoughts, although I am not really close to London I do have some friends there, both r/l and online and am glad to announce they are all safe and sound.

There has apparently been a statement on a website used by Al Quaida claiming responsibility for the atrocities in London, casualty figures are still sketchy although the death toll so far is at 2 confirmed, but is expected to rise further. :(

I know God didn't do this... ...it remains a difficult task to try and explain to those that have lost their faith...I worked ground zero for 5 days following 9-11 and it is hard to relive that tragedy...

Mark, I just heard from Sky News the death toll is at 45 and rising.

I'm sorry Mr.F, I should have been more careful with my words. I wasn't thoughtful, my apologies. :rose:

I can begin to imagine what you saw and felt at Ground Zero. :rose:

At a briefing given by the emergency services they have comfirmed 33 dead at the Underground stations, and a number of dead from the bus which is not yet known.

Thanks Peg, although I am not near London I can agree with your sentiments.

The latest news is that there was 4 explosions this morning, 3 on the Underground and 1 on a bus, initial reports of more explosions are due to the close proximity of some stations to each other, it would appear that an explosion on one train put a whole in a wall to another station to damage another train.

My own thoughts are that the one on the bus was originally destined for another tube train and was either dumped or went off early or the bomber was delayed.

My original fear was that there was several devices on the underground to make them shut the network down and make everyone use the buses then there would be more devices on some buses to maximise the casualties but thank god that appears to be unfounded.

thank you Mark... those news reports from you are the same we are getting here.. at least what I just saw on TV.. about 4 separate attacks.

and our own alert level as just been raised for buses and subway systems..

sigh...

I hope the US government is as diligent with helping our UK friends as the British gov't was in helping us...
