OK, can anyone advise me how to unlock a mobile phones *handset*, i.e. the keypad, or at least find it’s code?

I’ll explain; I’ve ‘inherited’ a handset (read: workmate says ‘I have a new mobile and a new job, who wants my old one for a fiver?’ Door closes, workmate gone), it’s a bit old but miles better than my current one.

Anyhoo, I’m not worried about the SIM, I can use my own, but the actual handset seems to be locked – you slide it up, press the menu button, and it asks you to enter a security code.

D’oh!

Now, I’ve seen in the markets the mobile phone stalls advertising an unlocking service – which generally means unlocking a handset so it can use other providers SIM cards, but I think also includes unlocking handsets where you’ve forgotten your code or entered it wrong too many times.

But before I go and pay them to do it for me, I figured, I have a computer, I have the data cable for the phone, I have a bit of spare time – can I do it myself and save the hassle?

Long story short – can I do it myself? At least find out the current security code so I can unlock it, or do I have to do something like flash-fry it back to factory settings?

Or, worst case scenario, actually *pay* someone else to do it? *horror*

Usually, the lock code is by default, the last 4 digits of the phone number that's attached to the phone you have. Some users personalize theirs, though, if that's allowed on their phone. Is there any way you can ask the original owner of the phone?

I'm wary of trying the 'obvious' ones like 1234 too many times in case I lock it totally and *have* to pay someone to unlock it.

Besides, I'm a little bored, in no hurry, and I like the idea of the challenge of sorting (read: superspy hacking!) it myself :)

Think of yourselves as superspy sidekicks.

But yes, I am trying to find the original owner just-in-case.

I should have thought of it at the time, but here it's very common when people leave to send an email round with the usual 'pleasure to have worked with you all, great times, if you want to keep in touch email me at blahblahblah@hotmail.com or whatever'.

Except not in this case. Bah.

He surely left a contact number/address with somebody there.... maybe you should use your espionage skills trying to find that...

For what it's worth, I think 0000 might be a good try. Every phone I've had has been set on that originally and if it doesn't work then my guess is it's some sort of random number that he put in.

I'm going on the assumption that if he activated the keypad lock, he'd have went to the trouble of giving it his own code.

Like I said, I'm not in a hurry, I have my own phone, and I want to do this for the sake of doing it :D

I figure those guys down in the market must have some standard procedure, I want to see if I can find what it is - some software or something - hense my asking here :)

I'm assuming you've tried google then....

Trying to atm, but all I'm getting are endless links and explanations for unlocking a mobile to use a sim from a different service provider - which I guess I'll need to do if it rejects my own SIM once I get that far.

For now, the first step is to crack the *keypad* lock code.

What type of phone is it?

I've delved into Nokia and SE phones with my PC easily enough. Keypad lock is a bit of a problem though, never had to crack that.

Some phones require a special piece of kit, but others there is software.

google "unlock"+"cell phone" and a forum ought to show up in your search results - damn it, I wish I could remember the name. You can post an unlock request in the forum, and within about a day someone will tell you exactly how to unlock it, step by step.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

There are a number of forums, I'd find it myself if he let us know what phone model it is.

If it's a Nokia you could try this dodgy russian website. I opened it and my computer is still working . . .

It's a Samsung D900i - like I said, not exactly bleeding edge, but miles better than I have atm

Try these:

Switch off phone and remove sim card first.

*2767*3855# - FULL E2P RESET
*2767*2878# - CUSTOM E2P RESET
#*7337# - UNLOCK

Try the custom first, phone should reboot then switch off again, replace the sim then on again. All the contacts will be lost, most likely, but you have little to lose.

Cool - where did you find those? 'cos all I could find was stuff about unlocking the phone to use another providers sim....

I suspected that is what you would have found, because that is what most people want to unlock.

I can't remember how I found it, I'm just a lateral thinking googler. Possible 'samsung d900 reset'.

Let us know if it works.

Ok you can't leave us hanging. I know it is just a phone but I tripped over this thread and read it thru and now I need to know if Nec has his mobile working or not.

Nah; in the end I didn't have time, forgot about it for a few weeks, and ended up taking it down to the local market and getting it unlocked at one of the stalls.

I have a little way to go before I can claim my 'leet haxor' stripes....

lol

do you have insurence on the phone?
If you do - bang it up against the wall a few times and say you dropped it down the stairs...
then - u'll get urself a free phone! :p

Look up the make & model number on the net. Several makers provide help for just this problem. I got an old Nokia working this way.

Hope this helps./

Well at least you got it unlocked. Cost you a few £ but it got rid of the headache.

Thanks for letting me know how the story ended :)

cheers
