With everything I've been through in the last 18 months or so I find this absolutely hilarious.

I've just drawn jury duty for the month of May.

Congratulations! It must make you proud to do your civic duty.

I've gotten called on to do jury duty three times. The first two times were while I was in college, within a couple months of each other. I got called by Maryland where I was legally a resident and Massachusetts where I was going to school. Maryland has an exemption for out-of-state students. Massachusetts preys on students and forces them to do jury duty even if they aren't legal residents. Luckily for me I was the last person to be kicked off the jury, since it would have meant missing three days of very important classes.

The other time was in Virginia. I was on the hook for two months (had to call every Thursday to see if I had to show up the next day), and I only ended up going in once, and again got kicked off the jury.

The good part about Massachusetts' jury law is that you serve either one day or one trial. If you don't get selected on the day you are called, you are in the clear for about three more years until you get called again. Same is true if you get picked for a trial; you're clear for about three more years. I went in for my day of not getting selected last year, so I won't get called again for a while.

Here it's for 30 days, unless chosen for a trial then it's up to 3 months. I have to go to orientation and then after that I have to call every night to see if I have to report the next day.

In New Jersey, you don't have to sit if you are a student, or if you will suffer a significant finincial loss of income (easiest way to avoid it, actually).

You don't have to serve if you have sat in the last three years either.

I don't remember if you get to leave after being dismissed from selection, because I was dismissed on the last day the one time that I was selected for selection.

I've been called three times, picked three times and made Jury foreman each time.

They were all guilty. No one messes with King Og.

30 days minimum! What do small business owners do if they're selected - it could potentially put them out of business or at least squarely behind the 8 ball. Or can a hair stylist, accountant, dentist, etc get out of serving?

I got called last year. The first letter said call the courthouse by this date. The second letter arrived a week before that deadline and set another date to call. The third letter said that no trials had been scheduled for the county that month and I was off the hook.

There is an option to ask to be excused do to potential financial hardship, and other things.

That's a relief. I'll have time for things like that when I retire.

I hope it isn't a major hassle for you, sweets.

Maybe you'll get called for a very short trial?

:)

OMG I have to go in next week!!!! Isn't it crazy!?

Gimme good ideas to get out of it!!

I have been called a few times. Twice I went to the courthouse and was picked but dismissed peremptorily. Other times I have just sat around the courthouse or at home on standby. I have never served on a jury.

I've been called twice, served once.

Trial took less than a week.

My mother has served several times and on two murder trials, poor thing. Verdict was guilty both times.

Mean little momma.

;)

I don't see why people are so eager to try to get out of jury duty. When it means losing a lot of money to serve, that's one thing, but for the most part that isn't the case. When I got called in Massachusetts, I hated it because it was a hardship to miss classes, but I would have gladly served if that hadn't been the case.

Shouldn't be a major deal. Tax season is over by that time, so I won't be missing out on money. I'll get a whole $12.50 for each day I have to serve. :nana:  (I'll try not to spend it in one place. :D) I'll have to pay for parking, but they've reduced it to $1 per day.

I'm actually looking forward to it. BUT I don't want to be sequestered. Not being able to see or talk to my husband?!

Incredible. All things considered.

I don't have any ideas. I tried to come up with some, but...

It's okay though, it's a fascinating process for me, but I just don't want to be away from home.

I was called up for Jury service - Any other time and I would have loved to have done it but not at 8 months pregnant - they let me off, that was 10 years ago and I haven't been called since LOL

You have to pay for parking? I would think they would validate for you. That would piss me off on principle, even though a dollar isn't much for me to get bent out of shape about.

I'm a stay at home mom, which means it doesn't mean loss of income, but I homeschool 2 little ones, and it means I won't be doing THAT for however long... plus there's the fact that it cuts into my writing time considerably! :p

AND it's 40 minutes from home in traffic I generally avoid and just a general pain in my ass!

As I said, I have never served on a jury, although I have been ready to. Basically, it's boring, sitting around all day if you don't get called, and boring if you do, because most cases are very dull and mundane. And, if it's a high profile case, it can be very time-consuming and very unpleasant, looking at pictures of things like bloated corpses and dismembered bodies.

I would do it if I had to, but I can think of many better things to do.
