Chloe took the long, winding back roads home instead of the highway. The darkness of the car and warmth of the music filling the small space comforted her. She was not looking forward to going home, and unlike most young adults, that had nothing to do with her parents. In fact, she’d give anything to see them again.
Her mom and dad had died this past summer, leaving Chloe and her older brother alone. They were adults, they could technically take care of themselves, but that didn’t make the loss any easier. Chloe had tried to stay at school. She’d taken up a part time job to try and make up for some of the lost funds, but in the end she couldn’t handle a job on top of her coursework, all of which was surrounded in a bubble of grief so enormous she felt like she was going to explode into tears any moment. So she’d decided to transfer to the local community college back home for her 2nd semester of sophomore year. She was set to start the spring semester there. Saying goodbye to all her friends had been painful and she was afraid they would drift apart with the distance.
She dreaded going back home. She always did, but it was especially bad now with mom and dad gone… Her brother was all she had left to rely on… and he couldn’t be relied on for anything except being a complete asshole. Going back for the funeral had been painful enough, but now she was going back home full time.
The truth was things with her brother weren’t exactly normal. He’d always been a bully to her, pushing and shoving her out of the way of new toys when they were young. As they aged he didn’t grow out of the abuse and would still slap her on occasion, but not hard enough to leave a mark, at least not on any visible parts. But the really weird stuff started when she was around 15. It was just a few offhand comments at first, a few inappropriate remarks about her figure. That was it. But eventually he’d started to push things. Comments turned to touches. He’d smack and pinch her ass on occasion, and had even groped her breasts once or twice. She’d never said anything to anyone about it, because it didn’t seem like too much of a big deal. He was her older brother, he was supposed to pick on her, right?
The first time it dawned on her that something might be a little off about him was at a friend’s slumber party in her teens. Chloe had told them about her brother trying to pull her bathing suit top off in the pool. They’d all looked at her like she’d had five heads and she never brought it up again, but ever since then she knew things weren’t exactly normal between her and her brother.
Now that their parents were gone she was worried if he’d try to take things further. Even at their parents’ funeral he’d been more grabby than usual. She was hoping that extra aggression had been due to his grief and wouldn’t be a permanent facet of his personality… now that she was going to be living with him alone.
Chloe sighed heavily as she pulled into the driveway. Even going under the speed limit she was bound to get home eventually. The lights were on inside. She knew her brother would be waiting for her. He better help her with her bags, at least.
She entered the house wearing her college sweatshirt and some ripped jeans. Her dirty blond hair was tied up in a messy bun and she wasn’t wearing any makeup. It was moving day and she didn’t have anyone to impress. Chloe knew her brother would harass her either way. She called out his name into the dimly lit house as she put the first of her bags down on the table.
