I was waiting for a fresh start so I could jump in.

On the previous topic, my perspective is someone who exhibits confidence doesn't go out of their way to let people know. On the other hand some who displays arrogance does so out of self promotion and many time lacks confidence in their own abilities.

Here's a topic for discussion. Do we need to add a numeral to the topic when a thread gets closed a new one is opened?

Can't it just be reopened as Litiquette? I don't think there is a rule on opening a thread with the exact same name. If one is closed, it will quickly fall. I've never understood that. I'm not saying I think it is wrong or completely inappropriate. It just feels unnecessary. Maybe it's just me.

Wow! That was quick! I would never have guessed you could move that fast, Chained.

Let’s see, what was the question? Arrogance versus confidence and the line between? The latter is wildly attractive in an individual; the former repulses me quicker that 3 day old fish. Where’s the line between the two? I couldn’t begin to tell you, though I agree with Des that it can be difficult to discern between the two in relation to oneself.

Three lines ^^ to answer the question! Is anyone impressed? I’m cutting my answers down until the end of the year. If my answer is won’t fit in 4 lines, no post.

………..I suspect the thread may not be seeing me much for the next few weeks.

Seriously failing the above suggestion of a four line post......again

I would not have thought of Chained as arrogant until his reply to my last post. The one that started this line of questioning on confidence and arrogance.....So much for a friendly yank of Chained! I have been duly spanked but I maintain Chained left himself open to my question.

Actually, to my mind, Chained was more smug than arrogant in his response. Generally, I see no air of superiority around him nor can I recall any particular examples in the thread of him being judgmental or disrespectful. He did not assume that his readership wanted to continue to participate in this new thread but asked if we were up for round three.

Confidence is being self assured but approachable, perhaps with some expertise and experience, demonstrating empathy and humility to foster a collaborative environment, like this thread. Being self assured is a trait not a display, so you shouldn't suddenly look in the mirror one day and see an arrogant ass. It's when the belief in yourself extends to putting others down or reveling in others' mistakes, when humility and respect no longer coexist with your self belief that confidence turns to arrogance and your ass is exposed. It might be a fine line for some but it's easy to discern, at least in others.

A new page means a new poll. This one will be quite interesting, at least to me.

I don’t believe that a great deal of confidence makes someone the arrogant ass in the room. Quite the opposite, in fact. To me, these 2 traits are complete opposites of each other. Confidence is often quiet, steady, calm, decisive, and assured. Arrogance is often loud, unsteady, indecisive, and stems from a lack of; it is a weakness.

I see no line needing to be drawn because they are on opposing ends of the spectrum. If one possesses confidence, arrogance is lacking. When one possesses arrogance, confidence is lacking. I also believe that it is the self awareness in someone that enables confidence to develop as a trait versus arrogance. I have never met someone who was arrogant and self aware at the same time. It just doesn’t happen.

Confidence and arrogance seem two sides of the same coin to me. Being a subject matter expert (for instance) can land a person on either side, depending on their character.

Confidence embodies knowing your impact on others, making sure it is positive, and both giving and receiving support.

Arrogance to me means not being aware of, or not caring about your impact on others, the end result is usually negative, and you are not supportive of others, nor garnering their support in return.

Therefore, I also believe the line shifts with one's self awareness, as pointed out by others.

I saw this awhile back , not on here, somewhere else...written by Talib Kweli

You have to know when to be arrogant
You have to know when to be humble
You have to know when to be hard
You have to know when to be soft

:eek:and WHY did my mind go straight to the perverted gutter when I read the last two lines?

Thanks for this ^. You just cleared up a personal issue causing me no small amount of confusion. :rose:

Here's my knee jerk reaction to the QOTD.

Although at first glance they may seem similar, arrogance is driven by a deep-seated insecurity. You have a need to be noticed, to be seen and to be liked. Your motives are driven by something other than just to be. Confidence is knowing who you are and isn't contingent upon anyone else's approval. It may be nice for people to like you, it isn't necessary.

My concept of confidence has changed throughout the years. I used to think that people who are larger than life are always confident. I found out, not necessarily so. Some of them probably are. However, on other side of the spectrum, those quiet, steadfast people, resilient and unbending to anyone's will other than their own are just as confident, just different.

It's ok, you have company in the gutter :D

Most happy to be of assistance :rose:
I also take away some golden nuggets from this thread. I like that
And I second your BEG comment :)

4 lines?!?!

That's the new rule?

WOW.

I guess I already broke the rules. I'm probably going to be written up.

Bring. It.

I'm not scared. *grin*

There is no way I'm enforcing content limits. If you need to write War & Peace to get your point across, write away. Just don't expect me to make it all the way through it.

It's an anonymous poll, which means there isn't any asking who voted or how they voted. You can always offer up any information you would like but no asking.

I am curious as to what prompted the question.

Just curious Chained up, did you vote in the poll?

Noooooo! Not trying to enforce content rules on others! Just myself. :rose:

But...a quick rethink has led me to the conclusion I've exceeded my *serious* quota for the year. :D

I'll be taking the rest of 2014 off. So, Merry Christmas!!! In advance, for those I don't run into on other threads. :)

Well, thank you! It's nice to change it every now and then.

Scooting over for Collar_n_Cuffs, we might as well make room for more pervs and pervettes to join :D
Thank you for liking the sig:rose:

Just that you stated in your last thread that you chose not to answer your own question. I wondered if the same went for the poll.
