Hey Guys and Gals. I submitted a new story over 72 hours ago, and it still says pending. is that normal?

The time of year seems to be a factor also, as there is only ONE person, posting our stories. And she's got a life outside of our smut. I submitted a story around Thanksgiving last year and it took four weeks to get posted. But I've also had it take one day.

Normal. It's not FIFO across all the stories submitted so there's no real way of knowing "where you are in the queue". I had a story approved in 12 minutes once, and in the meantime people on the forums were saying that theirs had been pending 3 weeks.

Those are two extremes, 72 hours very normal.

Apparently ten new Halloween stories went up just before the cut off time, and there's over 220 entries total. They would have been prioritised over others.

It should be returning to normal now.

Yeah, the end of the submission period for a contest is always busy. Contest entries are believed to get priority, OP, and the Halloween Contest is one of the biggies.

72 hours ain't bad, even for established writers.

I came here to ask the same thing. I’m waiting on the third part of a story to be published. The answer is …. Time is just an abstract concept. Oh well.

I believe the time to publish depends somewhat on how many stories/how long you've been writing. New authors probably get extra scrutiny because some authors attempt to skirt the rules and Laurel doesn't know what to expect from a new author.

My publish time is usually 1-2 days unless a contest is running. Then it can stretch to 3.

There's wild variation in wait times. I've got a non-fiction essay I submitted over six weeks ago which is still pending, but a new story submitted early this morning was approved in a matter of hours.

Any one of us who's ever posted poetry on the site can tell people a thing or two about long wait times. My prose usually goes up within three days; poems can wait a month or more.

Glad to see people have had such varied experiences. And appreciate the context around the timing and contests happening. My first two stories published in 48 hours and now I have one that’s been pending 25 days. Seemed long, but I’ll hold tight.

I've had stories approved within 36 hours and others take several days. It depends on their workload, and how comfortable they are with you as an author to follow their rules.

Any time I come close to mentioning underage characters in the story, I alert the Admins in a note to what's happening and where I state they are over 18. So, I recommend that everyone become familiar with the site rules, and make their jobs easier by following those rules, and at least alert them with how you're trying to stay within the box.

We'll see how long my latest story (63rd and most in Loving Wives) takes to go from Pending to Published, since I just clicked "Publish" on it (Oct 30th, 5:27 EST).

In the Note to Admin, I said:
"The story mentions a high school girl and sex, but I state in the last paragraph of the Intro that she's 18-years old finishing her last year in school. It doesn't mention their ages when they first had sex, just that they've had a few experiences."

They may yet return it with a warning that I need to make it more specific. But here's hoping ...

I've had a story pending approval for six days, which seems very strange. It's one of my longest wait periods for a story. It's not that long--only about 14,000 words. It's in the Mature category, and it doesn't have any content I can think of that would get it bounced. And I've been doing this for over 8 years with no rejections, so it seems like it shouldn't take this long.

I've had that happen occasionally as well. Most likely culprit is the short gap between the Halloween Competition and the Winter competition. Laurel's probably just backed up.
Of course, you know the routes to remedy; polite PM to the gatekeeper, etc...

I'm reluctant to send a message, because in the scheme of things it's not important enough and I don't want to be whiny about it. It might just be timing, as you suggest.

I'm fairly sure the backlog of pending stories is longer now, for whatever reason. I've had a story pending since 10/18, and I've talked with other authors that have seen similar delays.

There definitely seems to be a delay. A have a bunch of edits (which do take longer than new stories) that have been pending since mid-October plus a new story that's been waiting for over a week. There's also a non-fiction essay of mine which has been languishing for over nine weeks. I realize fiction is more popular and so takes priority of non-fiction, but that just feels kind of insulting; unless there's some kind of glitch that's keeping it hidden.

Contest entries are still going through lickety-split. As they usually do. It makes sense that non-entries would take a step back in the queue.

Which is, yet again, a LOUD answer to the question, "What's all the harm in yet another author invitational/challenge or contest? It doesn't affect anything else on the site, having all these Events!"

Yes, I think it might.
