What do you think makes a popular [not good etc] literotican story?

Besides being in the anal or incest category ;)

Well, geez, wishful, you took the answer right out of my mouth, so to speak. Every story I've ever written that involved anal has attained an H rating in short order.

Wide appeal - sex scenes that both men and women can enjoy without a hint of eucck!

Believable action and people; not necessarily like real life but sufficiently plausible for disbelief to be suspended.

A good title and description in the right category.

Now if I could follow my own advice - I'd get a few more Hs.

The same thing that makes any story good.

Characters, plot and setting.

Unless you're writing strictly for people to wank to. Then you just have describe the action reasonably well, and include the preferred fetish.

Although my most popular series is in the incest category, I receive few comments about the sexual aspect of the story. People now read it for the story.

Believable characters, and a strong plot...that's the ticket....

Sentimentality is always popular. Often it verges into schmaltz, but schmaltz works too.

Writing to the reader's expectation. Badly written stories that tip the right buzz words for a cat will do better than well written ones that don't.

This is a great question. Before I offer my response, I would like to point out that I am a reader (not an author). Further, my perspective is that of a person who primarily reads stories in the BDSM category, involving heterosexual scenarios where a male is the primary dom character and a female is the primary sub in the tale.

My observation is that the popularity of the author is the most important factor in determining the popularity of the story itself.

Looking at the BDSM TopList (and defining "popular" as the stories with both high ratings and a large number of votes), you see tales by authors such as Penelope Street and rgraham666. Strong authors who don't usually frequent the BDSM genre, writing very good stories that are met with great popular success. There are also popular stories by perennial favorites in the BDSM category, such as Sir Nathan and Singularity.

Obviously, these authors are popular for a reason - they consistently write great stuff! But does that necessarily mean that each piece of their work would rank near the top if authors' identities were hidden on all stories submitted? I, personally, don't think so.

As a secondary response to your question, I would say that (unfortunately) stereotypical characters seem to have great appeal in the BDSM genre.

Most notably, The Super Dom - the guy who instantly knows how to manipulate, arouse, and control any female with whom he makes contact. He never makes a mistake, is desired by any & all females in the story, frequently has many subs at his disposal, and is often quite wealthy.

This formulaic character doesn't do much for me, personally, but (with very few exceptions) he does seem to be omnipresent in popular BDSM tales.

Hi Alice :rose:

I must admit, I haven't read hardly any in the BDSM category on Lit. As soon as I see "yes, master", I back click. To me, that comes across as people playing games, or changing hats. I know this isn't the case, but what makes a dom for me isn't the title, but actions - and this is what I would like to see in a story. I want to write a story for the BDSM category this year, but doubt it will go down well because there won't be 1 single "master". :D

Like Colly said, I think there are definitely buzz words, and even formulas. For instance, I would'n't dare to presume to write an incest story without the horny nerd son getting his hot mother pregnant, or if not pregnant, at least not using a condom ;)
