Last time we had an interview with smithpeter, do you all remember? Well now, JUDO's the poet on the spotlight. Congratulations, J-
* Five Questions With Poet...Judo *
Judo is not only a writer of sensual, character-driven erotic fiction, but she's also a wonderful poet. She likes to experiment with a variety of forms - from the haiku to the sonnet - and her meticulous word choice makes for fun, sexy, evocative poems. Here's what she has to say on poetry:
1) Who's the most erotic poet you've ever read?
Sorry, to start off with skirting the question a bit, but I believe the very nature of poetry to be sensual, which in my way of thinking, is erotic. With limited sentence structures, poetic forms, and words, the poet has to get to the heart of the matter very quickly. Tone plays an incredibly important role in getting a story or thought across contained in a poem. And for me, tone is essentially set up by great and careful word choices.
I don't believe that I've ever read much poetry that was intended to be erotic. I have read a lot of authors, novelists and short story writers, whose work is considered erotic, but no one who comes to mind as strictly erotic poets. If I had to name favorite poets then whose work I loved, it would be Emily Bronte, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Robert Browning Hamilton, Robert Frost, and Emily Dickinson.
2) What made you decide to write your first erotic poem?
What else? A great, unrequited love that broke my heart and made me insane.
3) What sort of images in erotic poetry are exciting to you?
Emotions as well as images are the big ones for me in a poem, but soft, sensual moments of touch, or stopping to hear a gentle whisper of a lover who needs attention. These would be among my favorites. It's also fun to play with the fiddly-bits now and again.
4) Have you ever written erotic poetry for a lover? What was his/her response?
Since the beginning when I began to write poetry I've done this. I don't do it as often now, but I did very recently and posted it on the site. Not only did she like it and send me a wonderful email, saying she recognized that it was for her, I got other emails from people I didn't know, saying similar things. That was pleasant.
5) Any words of advice for would-be erotic poets?
Listen. Read. Write a lot. Try new stuff, it will help you with the old stuff. Practice using forms and no forms. Listen for the Muse to strike. Take advice. Be gentle with others. But most of all, get in touch with who you are, what you desire, and what you want to leave behind. If you can find those things in life that "turn you on," all of your works will be better.
