Has anybody had the experience of discovering that someone else that you know is also a contributing writer to the site? I've been submitting stories here for a few months after stumbling across it while web surfing. Since then I have heard about it by word of mouth from other people that I know but who had no idea that I had stories posted here.

I wonder how many people actually frequent this site and I wonder how many of them walk by me everyday without either of us knowing.

I've told a few people about this site, and encouraged a couple of them to write something nasty and post it here, but i'm not sure anyone has (yet).

However, no one in my public, everyday life knows i write erotica (much less has any idea of the other, far more goggle-producing stuff i do in my private life) and i've wondered if any of them know about this site. I work with a bunch of literate and open-minded people; surely one or two have been here? How many have a little thrill going, a secret pleasure derived from coming here to read or post, never aware that the normal-looking woman down the staff table from them is also present?

Titillating.

I wonder that too. I wonder when I'm standing around waiting for the teacher to dismiss my kids, just who among the other parents could be a secret Literotican.

How insulting. I'm DCL. Everyone knows I'm that little evil streak inside you that makes you back up and then run over the IRS guy againe Willie. Deborah doesn't need me.

Everyone in my life with the exception of my father-in-law who still doesn't comprehend the concept of "internet" knows what I do. *shrugging* It's not nearly as big a deal as I'd thought it would be. But I'm not rich, or famous, and my I don't have to worry about being fired. Of course, I don't bring it right up. Hi my name is Muffin, I write porn on the net. But when someone asks me what I do, I tell them I'm a writer. What do I write? I'm working on a novel, I've been published as such and such place and I write erotica. Interesting reactions you get from people.

Laurel *is* Deborah!

LOL! Nah...I lack both her writing talent and ability to piss off everyone. I'll work on both, though.

According to our stats, we're getting around 170,000 unique visitors a day. Far out!

No, pat YOURSELF on the back, 'cause you authors deserve the credit! Without you, we're nothing. :)

Hmmm... just how unique are these visitors? I mean they could be aliens or something...

If Literotica is reaching aliens, then NASA has been wasting billions of dollars for way too many years!

Who knew that aliens wanted to read porn! ;)

170,000?!?!?!

Gee, I wonder what is in store for the publishing business in the next five years or so.

Um, Laurel, what is the latest word on the e-books idea?
(170,000?!)

Well, you can preview the site at

It's bare bones right now - still in development. The guy who programmed the Lit script is working on the eBook back end. It's more complicated than the Lit, because there's got to be a shopping cart and a way to purchase & download the books and all sorts of stuff we've never done before. Meanwhile, Manu and I are reading about ebooks and formatting and all that jazz. It's a learning experience! When we know more concretely what we're doing as far as payment, submissions (we'll be pickier than we are at Lit), etc., then we'll pass that info on to anyone who's interested.

And to think...all these years we've been playing music at them when we should've been transmitting nudie pics and moans! What a waste...

Don't get caught up in the numbers game. How many of you check back and forth on the bulletin board five or six times per day? Granted not all the visitors are the mad cap lot here on the author's pages, but if you divide 170,000 by 6 then the hits actually look a little more realistic--28,333..

Now take your buyer to browser share of 2% sales (Maximum) and you come up with approximately 567 potential purchasers. At $2.00 per book the site may pick up $1134.00 on a good day. Subtract editorial (believe me they cannot do it all and have a life) and eCommerce overhead--plus the credit card companies receive a 3-4% discount per order when they're being kind.

Okay--how many purchase days are there a month? Unknown. 30 days hath September... so a perfect Sept would be approx. $34,000 minus 12% for the author(s) ($4082). Leaving Laurel and Manu approx $30,000 before web and editorial expenses are deducted. But who among us ever has a perfect month?

Plus--and this is unfortunate--there will be returns!
I am not here to make your sun go nova while you're sunbathing--but as authors tyhe best you can manage is a piece of the $4082 per month ($48,984 per year) which although it is a nice moderate amount for a one person will need to be divided among all the authors.

Plus--and this is for Laurel and Manu especially--you'll need a bad guy. Everybody on the boards loves you--but wait until you have to tell an author that her 350 page baby isn't good enough.

That kind of thing turns reasonable human beings into Attila the Hun.

I selfishly hope that this escapade works--but Jeez folks be realistic. The only person ever to make money with net publishing so far is Stephen King--and he barely broke even--although he won't admit it.

I didn't think much of your dissertation on the profitability of e-books, Ulyssa. I do agree that the profitability is still suspect but I'm not buying what you're selling.

First, Laurel said UNIQUE visitors. Disregarding that point which may be somewhat irrelevant anyway, there are certainly more "marketing techiques" available besides relying on "customers" of this site. What about possible advertisement on Amazon for one? If I had an e-book published for money I certainly would do my own web site and advertise there. There are many possibities to "market" an e-book, some that haven't even been thought of yet. I do believe that e-books will one day be profitable. You have to think toward the future not the past.

DarlingBri, you are not the only one who thinks Laurel and I are one and the same. The subject has come up before. Here is one of my favorite threads ...

"UGH!!!"

Laurel gives one of her best speeches ever.

I'm not sure how "unique visitors" are tracked, but because my provider uses dynamic ISP assignment, I'm pretty sure I show up as a "unique visitor" each time I go to the home page. That number also depends on where the count is taken. I seldom go to the home page, because my bookmark takes me directly to the BB.

Still, 170,000 is a very respectable number in comparison to other sites who use the same method of counting hits.

I don't expect to get rich from the sale of E-books, but I won't pass up an extra trip to McD's on my share either.

Not quitting my day job...

I'm with Wierd Harold! Its not a plan to get rich selling my books that fires up my interest. Its the prospect of doing something new, something worth doing. The future of publishing is up in the air right now. Because of the internet I really do feel as if no one is in the driver's seat anymore. There has got to be an impact in the future from all of these manuscripts floating around out there in 1st ammendment heaven and I plan on watching it develop.

I have a prospectus for some share certificats in a dot com I'd like to discuss with you. It's so much better than wallpapering my grandmother's house with them.

Yeah right... and I'm Gnufi! *lol*

Ulyssa, your point is pointless.

Yeah, MP, and I'm bratcat and Dillinger is our fuck rat. Doesn't he barely talk like one?

Actually, I like the REAL Kid Rock. Well, shame on me. Thought he was cool the other nite and when he's on Howard Stern he gives off the aura "This shit ain't real."
