this is just an idea... i haven't talked to laurel about it or anything, just thought i'd bounce it off y'all and see what came back at me.

a couple of my favorite free sites have recently started asking for donations from users in order to secure a good server or whatnot. they do this through pay pal and amazon.com , so the users never have to give the site owners their credit card numbers or anything.

since what lit really needs is another server, and what it really needs to get that is more money, what about some of us donating? i, for one, would be willing to contribute a few of my hard earned dollars (like 15) to the cause. alone that's nothing, but if a majority of the regular users chipped in a little bit each, it mught add up to something meaningful.

so... hate the idea? tell me why. agree with it? let me know. it's just a thought....

That would be cool, but I'd need a po box to send a money order or something. And I'd have to wait for my income tax to come in.

No credit cards here.

Darn.. I deleted the newsletter already.

I was going to cut and paste here, what Manu said about the new server.

It's my understanding they have a new server and things should be speeding up soon.

Instead of "donating" money.. I think everyone who hasn't done so yet, needs to run out and buy the Lit book. ;)

It's wonderful! Well worth the money.. and I can't wait until Number 2 comes out.

with paypal you can use a checking account. if you have an atm card with a visa or mastercard logo you can also use that.

Id be happy to send in a donation for the new server fund. It's a simple procedure to set up a donation button through paypal. I do most of my internet transactions through them.

However, I wonder how the ads on the main page are working for them? Do they generate revenue for the site as a whole?

Just curious, don't expect an answer to that. I am not an accountant, and I don't play one on tv. :)

I like the idea. Heck I'd even go to 24 for the year!

Now I need to go buy a certian book...

Actually, we just did this at Guru's site, and raised over $600 in one week alone to help out with costs. That site is rather small in comparison to this place. Anyway, one thing they have, is an option to donate at the top of the screen, and it goes straight through pay pal.

It's a good idea to help defry the costs, and also helps keep the site as a free one. I would hate to log on one day, and see that I have to pay, because I wouldn't be able to, and would have to leave, as would many others out there. However, I can understand well the cost of upkeeping a server. Way expensive for a board of this size.

One thing that would help, is going back to some of your older posts, and deleting attacments. They take up alot of bandwidth and that's what shoots the cost up, and slows the board down.

Count Me In

I would certainly willing to chip in. . .I've gained many friendships and learned a great deal about myself just in the short time I've been here. It seems only right to be able to give back in some manner. . .

You can donate, or if you wish to get something more for your money you can buy the Lit. book.

Just go down to my sigline and click on the Lit book - it will take you right to Amazon where you can order it.

Apparently donations are only accepted with nude photos. Or is it nude photos are only accepted with donations?

Damned good idea either way. I love this site and would be more than happy to cough up some cash to help out. I have ordered my copy of the Lit book through Borders but it's taking a hell of a long time to arrive.

Instead of a one time or once in awhile donation, How about a monthly fee for the BB, As many user's as there are this would definatly raise some cash. Even 5.00 per month would raise quite a bit . It could also eliminate the "unregistered" user's. Call it a registration fee or whatever you like. I would definatly pay it.

You guys rawk!

As much as we sincerely appreciate the sentiment, we don't ask for donations to support Lit. If you wanted to buy a copy of the book, that would be fabulous, but even that we'd rather you did because you enjoy great stories. If you want to donate money, I'd much rather see it go to a charity than to us.

The new server has been purchased, and it was supposed to be installed yesterday. There were some problems with the configuration or something, so we're hoping for tomorrow or the next day. Those of you who've been around for a while know our luck with hardware upgrades. :)

ohhhhh!!! you changed your AV! what a cute lil feller!

My guy is spending the night at the vets after, well lets just say after....

Made my eyes tear up. Dammit, I am not just a big softie!

I'd cough up some dough to keep LIT UP and running.
I hope Manu purchased the 'twin-hampster server' this time. Those single-wheeled models sucked cheese thru a straw.

In the newsletter, Manu said, "The new server will be a dual P4 2ghz box. Wow! That's about four times faster than my home computer and quite a bit more expensive ..."

That sounds like a "four squirrel" drive to me. No more anemic hampsters for Lit!

Yeah, that Feline PBH turbo mode is hard on the squirels, rats and hamsters. (PBH = Predator Behind Me!)
