is the chat application not working?

i'm new here, so if this has been discussed ad nauseum, i apologize.

the application loads and then hangs with the message "Initializing..."

ideas or suggestions?

No, it doesn't work. Enjoy the forums and/or find somewhere else to chat.

Yes, it's been discussed ad nauseum. You might want to familiarize yourself with using Google to search Lit (instructions in our FAQ sticky) so you can find such topics; here is a sample search to get you started (bookmark it, then replace the "chat not working" part w/ whatever else you're looking for in the future).

Just be glad you asked here, rather than the General Board, where they really hate questions about chat and avatars.

I just knew I was forgetting something!

It's a big one, too, because sometimes I take pity on them and point them to the sticky in SFF after the GB'ers bat them around, or ignore them, for a bit. :D

Actually, it does work, just not very well. Most people will get stuck at the Initializing... part, when first entering it. The trick is to refresh it (F5), until you see the login screen. For my laptop, it usually takes anywhere from 5-20 refreshes in order for the login screen to popup. My desktop only takes 1-5 refreshes though. I don't really know why this is yet though.

I've read that the chat can only admit a certain number of people. Once it reaches capacity everyone else gets stuck with the 'initialising' screen.
