Lit Story Distribution—Revisited

With over 50,000 stories posted on Lit, I thought I’d revisit a thread I posted back in March.

Two new categories have been added since then: “Erotic Horror” and “Letters and Transcripts,” now making a total of 32.

The columns below are the number of stories submitted in each of the Lit categories, the first column representing the sampling taken today, the second, a sampling I took back in March of this year. (Sorry for the *’s, but it’s the easiest way I’ve found to align the columns with numbers of varying lengths.)

Each number in parentheses is the original order of that category taken back in March, 2003.

There have been few shifts in story interest since.

ProofReadManx,

V-E-D-D-Y interesting figures. Thanks for going to all that trouble.

One thing the figures couldn't pick up is voting patterns. The Romance section seems to have been especially active the last few months. Of the category's 19 top rated stories, 16 have been posted since May. That 19th story has a 4.83 rating and over 200 votes.

Odds are the Holiday contest winner will come from the Romance category. One story had over 100 votes the first day. Currently, it's 13th on the Romance top list and 36th on the overall top list with 134 votes with a 4.84 rating.

I may have overlooked someone's entry, but I don't believe another contest entry is among the top 500 stories.

Hey, RF. ;)

YW. No trouble, really, a little EXCEL spreadsheet and wordprocessing made the task mincemeat (I would have preferred a nice drumstick, but hey . . . you get what you pay for).

You're right, of course, these long range numbers bury a lot of other kinds of information that would need to be tracked on a more regular basis (ahem . . . you'd think MathGirl would have done some of this . . . *cough *hack* . . . )

But it was interesting to run a comparison from about 9 months ago to see if there are any blips or trends (there are a few). For no other reason, I wanted to see how the most popular categories stacked up against the not-so-popular.

Have a good one.
