So as not to threadjack gauche's thread with frivolities, I'm doing this here. For the past two days, I've been reading about how people see or pronounce various Lit ids. I've learned people saw me as 'damn panties' or want it to be spelled 'dampanties' because the double P looks wrong. It's interesting and amusing. :D

On my part, I pronounce Nirvanadragones just as it looks, instead of Nirvana-dragoness. I pronounce the end to rhyme with bones.

And I never thought TheeGoatPig had an R in his name, ever. I did wonder what madness prompted him to have such an id, but that was before he explained it.

I'm interested about other people now. Is there an unusual way you see or pronounce names here?

I generally don't pronounce them at all because I usually only read them. It is strange though, when I'm talking to another AHer on the phone to hear myself say the names aloud. It almost sounds wrong to my ears. It's a rare occurence as well, as I don't generally talk about you people. It seems that if I do, I refer to you by your first names, which means I know you pretty well, and that's different. I guess. I'm rambling...

I never thought about your name, lol. I always saw it as 'damp panties'. I must be one of the odd balls, LOL.

Yui used to throw me off, lol.
And when Mat and I first started talking, I wasn't pronouncing it matriarch at all, lol. :p

See... I always thought he had an R in his name 'cos I didn't scan it properly first time around. 3113 is just 3, Vana trips out at Vanya and Shereads is never just She. Now gauchecritic... I've always had this as gaooosh critic whereas just gauche is gouche. Roxanne Appleby is just too long and unfortunately paints an image of a jovial soul standing at the pink rose framed doorway of her thatched cottage holding a golden crusted apple pie. Black Shanglan could never be simply Black or Palamino and Shang somehow resonates the stallion thrust. To be honest, i don't misread many though I do like to conjur with the images names project.

I missed where TGP explained his name!

I don't usually say Lit names aloud, but shorten them in my head to a nickname. Usually it's one that's been given already like Vana for Nirvanadragones, Imp for Impressive, EL for English Lady, etc. The ones like 3113 and MaveoSliabh I just recognize them and don't associate a pronunciation with them. I'm totally lost on those like fxarb (?) and others without sounds. And I never talk to any AH'ers on the phone. :(

I never, ever pronounced Nirvanadragones with "dragoness" at the end -- but I didn't rhyme it with "bones," either. More like, um, drag-OWN-es. Now, I just ignore the ending altogether 'cause it's an irritant.

When people use odd spellings (*cough* kiten *cough*), they get pronounced as spelled. It's my way of jabbing at my dislike of odd spellings, I guess. No harm, no foul.

Maeve... will always be "ent" (or, more often, her real given name) to me. I refuse to try to make even a lazy mental pronunciation for that collection of letters.

I even think of myself as EL, now and not English Lady *L*
I answer to it in real life, too :p

Oddly, I call you "Angel" in my mind. :rose:

I find it very difficult to remember names that can't be pronounced. 3113 I remember as three-one-one-three, although the SO has now pointed out to me that it's leet-speak for "elle." Still numbers to me; I am set in my ways. :)

Most people I think of by their screen names, precisely as written. EL for some reason is more often EL, and neonlyte gets his real first name, possibly because I'm so fond of that name. Now that I think of it, I think neonlyte is the only person I think of by the real name with any regularity.

Once Colleen became Colly, she never went back. It suited her.

I think of Joe W mostly by his first name, but everyone else, even the ones I know in real life are automatically thought off by their handles.

I'm the same wih three-one-one-three, too.

I tend to shorten handles in my head like,

thee, crim, vana, Scheh (I always go for this over zade for some reason), fem, rob, Bel,mat, min, gauche and Rumply.

I tend to think "Shanglan" (I just can't reduce it to Shang, I just can't) for you, but often find "horsey" jumps to mind, too.

And Imp is always Imp, even when she's Alessia :D

I did that too....I thought she was Spanish....LOL.

You'll always be Imp to me.

I'm lazy, I like to shorten names.

Are you sure? I could have swore that name was Persian ... :p

I shorten names a good deal as well, if I talk to the person very often. And honestly, I mostly think of myself as just "Shanglan"; I think "Black" is my last-name-first or something.

ETA: Speaking of mis-perceiving things ... Abs, when I first glanced your avatar, I saw a woman with a slender above-waist and massive hips and thighs, standing in water. Sorry, it's early mornng here.

You're Shang, deal.

Scheherezade... I know the end is pronounced kind of 'Zar-der' or something, but when it's shortened to Zade I pronounce it to rhyme with wade or made.

I also have massive trouble rememerbing RL names. Zade is always Zade, Bel is always Bel, Chantily is always Chantily and I'd probably call them this IRL too. I also answer to Vermilion,V and Mils...

But then, sometimes I say LOL in real life and dream in msn windows... so I'm not exactly normal.

I'm calling you Mili from now on.

It depends on how busy I am as to what everyone gets called. Mostly I shorten everything as much as possible to save time. If I know the real name and can remember it then I sorta switch between the online name and real name. Only talk to 2 (well 3 if you count the hubby) people on the AH on the phone/real life and they are known by their real names as thats how I knew them before coming on here.

Only if you want to be decked.

And believe me, I am quite capable of swimming to bloody transylvania (yeah yeah, I know you like to pretend it starts with a P) and doing it.

Vermilion, Mils or V, anything else and it's like calling Svenskaflicka (wherever she is) sven.

<not pmt and stroppy at all>
