Disclaimer: this may have been covered elsewhere but I can't find it.

I have a question as regards author to author etiquette. I have recently published my first story on here and another author was kind enough to post a positive comment about it which made me wonder if I should respond in some way? Is there a code of etiquette covering this and is it considered bad form not to acknowledge the comment?

I don't think there's any obligation to respond just because the comment came from a fellow author - we don't expect special privileges (or at least, I don't). I've sent the occasional PM if the comment is a longer, more detailed one, or if the comment comes from someone I've already struck up a behind the scenes friendship.

For me it comes down to this: if the comment came from a reader not a writer, would you leave a comment in reply?

Let's establish first off that I am a clueless fuck on the ways of Lit.

If I comment publicly it is a compliment. If I have more to say -- more often than not, a compliment going into greater detail, I PM. I have never criticized a writer I respect on any of their stories. That is their voice and their stories.

I have on occasion dumped on a writer who was simply throwing out shit onto the wall with the hope of becoming some hot orgasm somewhere in the world.

It's a fair comment as regards the reader/author comment reply and honestly I don't know if I would reply to all as the only other comments where from the lady who inspired the story (whom I'm in regular contact with) and the other comment was anonymous.
Thanks for the advice.

"throwing out shit onto the wall with the hope of becoming some hot orgasm somewhere in the world." Sounds to me like a Frank Zappa album!
Thanks for the advice and maybe I will hold fire replying.

If you click on the name given in the comment, you can select 'contact' and send them a message to thank them.

I try to do it but I miss some because I don't check my members' area often enough.

Damn it does! I love that. Thanks. Zappa. An undervalued, musical genius.
