Like many of you, I'm not a fan of the "1" vote!

good morning!

I just found out, after being more than a day away
from Literotica----due to technical difficulty----that
after some of my poems were on the toplist, that someone
must have given them "1" votes to bring the score down...
I am VERY disappointed in whomever did that. I know
that many of us do get the dreaded "1" vote, but just
voting the "1" vote for the hell of it is very low!

Just something to think about when one goes to vote
one someone's poems, mine, or anyone elses!!

Damn.

I hate it when that happens. I have not seen a story on Lit bad enough to legitimately rate it a "one." I have "2'd" a few stories but very few. Most stories get a three from me, which is average, or a four, which is above average. Rarely does a story get a five, because I consider five as rare as one.

Don't let it get you down. I think it happens to everyone.

i know but.......

Hi Sateema!

I hear what you are saying, and I know everyone
has their own way of voting on stories or poems, but
I know for myself, that I value my writing and at times
when I get socked with negative votes (which hasn't
happened recently until yesterday, go figure!) it can
get me down........

Thank you for dropping in! :)

And then of course........

Just trying to get someone to "vote" at all so you're poems don't sit in never-never land forever.

Tell you're friends.......I'd love my poems to finally get enough votes to show up.

Even you (1) bombers......at least it would go against the 10 vote minimum! (lol) :)

To sleep..........perchance to dream - William Shakespear

I remain..........

The good advice I can give but not take...

We've all been hit by the 1 voters, so believe me--I know how it feels. And, it happens more when you hit the top of the list, or have a number of things appear on the list. Also, I seem to get attacked more often if anyone posts feedback about my work.

I notice that you had several poems top the list all at once, and there've been several feedback threads devoted to your poems. So, I'm guessing that you were attacked by the infamous "top of the list" bomber. It's a drag, but it goes with the territory--the higher your profile, the more attention you get at both extremes. This happened to me just last week, and as you could probably guess from my last thread here, it upset me too.

But, in the end, it evens out. After the bombers, your poems will slowly accumulate more "real" votes, and by the time they move back up the list, they'll have acquired enough total votes to absorb some of the shock the next time it happens. Slowly but surely, they find their home.

Shake it off. It only gets easier from here.

Tigerjen, you always rate a 4 or 5!

Don't let 1-voters who probably didn't even read your work get you down. Speaking for myself, your writing gets me up :)

THANK YOU, WHITECRANE!

Thank you for the lovely reply.....I am very glad that

RisiaSkye,

Thank you for your reply.....I remember your thread
quite well in regards to the "1" vote matter......I've shaken
the crappy feelings off in regards to getting those 1's, but
I know it will be an issue from time to time.

Thank you again! :)

Thesandman.....
Thank you for your message.......I do pass the word on to friends
that aren't even on Literotica! Every time I get a new piece of
writing posted up, I pass the word on to them via email......not all
get to check it out, however. I do see some of your poems
up there, time to time.....quite good :)

Thank you again!

The Dreaded 1

I rarely give a 1 to a story. I think maybe 3 times it's happened. Someone who simply can't write coherently, i guess twice, and once to a writer whose story characters were so foolishly named as to destroy any erotic tension to the story.
BUT when I do give a 1 I think it only fair to sign my name and at least try to explain why I feel as I did.
Mostly if the story is just bad or unenjoyable I don't bother finishing it or rating it; I read these stories for pleasure, not to be a literary critic.
On the other hand I love to give a 5 to a story that has touched me in some way, made me think, presented me with a new sexual dynamic, aroused me, made my so hot that I masturbate before I finish the story. Once I calm down I write the author telling her/him how much I loved the story. And yes I sign my name too. And i signed this also:

I know JUST how you felt!! I t hurts, it hurts, I KNOW it hurts!

Oh, Tigerjen, honey, I know JUST how you felt! I hope the pain passes quickly 'cuz the way I'm depressed at the moment, I never want to post another poem or story on Literotica ever, ever, ever again! I thought it was just me!

Well, I'm still kind of a virgin here, so I was really shocked when my poem Poetic Pillow Talk received the dreaded one vote, which was also the ONLY vote it got after over 50 views!

I'm guessing that it's some pissed of guy taking revenge for a violent aversion to my rather sardonic satire Treat-n-Trick that even my lover, English Leather MASTER Scott, the butt of that horny tail, told me he found, "Somewhat less erotic than my usual literary gifts to him." Sigh! Such is the satirist's lovelorn lot, despised by the motly many, appreciated by the fervid few, who aren't voting! (Hint, hint. ;) )

LOVE, Kin Ky

BUT when I do give a 1 I think it only fair to sign my name and at least try to explain why I feel as I did. I did that with the woman, and she wrote back a irate screamer, but that's okay too. And I let her have the last word. The cruel statement is still in her profile so I just no longer read her stories.

This might be the wrong forum to ask this, if so forgive
me. I'm using an old browser (Lynx) and navigating is
still sort of hit-or-miss.
Anyway, how is voting handled here?
How do they keep me from voting for my own story?
How do they keep people from voting more than once?

As far as voting goes in general, I think that various
people have various standards; if I cast ten votes, I would expect
two of them to be 1 s and two of them to be 5 s.

I do find myself dropping stories in the middle;
and casting a vote in that case would be unfair.

voting is part of democracy

Voting is part of democracy....however, on Literotica
its not about politics and who gets into office....its about
giving votes to deserving stories and poetry.

You can only hope....

That enough people vote so that the '1's get evened out. We can also only hope that these '1' bombers do NOT have a way to vote more than once. I think the IP is tracked but that doesnt help if they are in a large computer lab!

I too have been hit by the '1' bomber...a darg indeed.

Hey SYSOP!!! Can't you track who is passing out all the '1's????

Perhaps we could somehow go to a more algorithmic way of computing averages taking into account the rating system of each user.

oh well...

voting

TigerJen--

I don't know if I've said this already but this is how I vote. If I feel a read is a 1, I don't vote. If a work is poorly written, and that is the premise for my vote, I think it's more productive to write the writer. My experience has been though that those who write poorly are also the most defensive so I think long and hard before I contact a writer.

I usually start at 3. I always comment. If I take time to vote, I feel the work is worth a comment. As it has been mentioned, folks want to know why you liked their work or how it can be improved.

I vote on form, style, creativity, and word choice. Liking a read is a bonus. My personal taste is a minor factor. I'm interested in what the poet is saying. With what little knowledge I have, I evaluate how successful the poet conveys his idea. Poetry is more than saying what you feel. It is how you say it that I'm interested in.

This may sound harsh, but I vote down for cliches, abstractions, incorrect syntax and poor grammar. Of course, if a writer is writing in a particular vernacular, then I look for consistency in usage and balance.

I vote up when a poet demonstrates some skill with poetry devices, forms, or is clearly experimenting with something that is a departure of her norm.

Peace,

daughter

Advice to abide by.......

daughter.....

now I think THAT is good advice to abide by when one goes and
reads either a poem or a story! :)

Hi Tiger Jen,

It's important to note the "1" problem is worst in low voting situations, such as with most poems. If there are 10 votes of 4, giving that average, a single "1" gives 3.72, a drop of almost 3 tenths. A second "1" (easily delivered, btw) yields 3.5, a drop of
one half.

Also worth noting is 'asymmetry'. In the first case, after the single "1" vote, a "5" only raises slightly, 3.83, and it would take
two more "5" votes to restore lost ground. If one's goal is the "hot"
category and 4.5 on average, then the situation is worse: assuming 10 votes to begin with, the single "1" drops a person to 4.09. It will then take TEN fives to restore the 4.5 average.

Writers in categories receiving 100 votes or even 50 are much less affected and 1's become of small effect, but still take several 5s to counteract.

What are solutions? Well, first it would have to be admitted there was a problem. After that?

Here are possibilities.

1) Have a 'not my cup of tea' rating instead of a "1" for people who hate a story; meaning that the person recognizes that the story just isn't for him(her). That allows a reader to register something and not interfere with those who may find the story to their liking.

2)Reduce the number of vote ratings to four. Eliminate the "1". In that case a "2" would have only twice the impact of a 5, on a 4.00
average.

Measures to make sure "1" is honestly given.

3)Have a separate tally for members votes, that being the crucial average. or a separate tally for votes of writers at lit.

4)Do not allow a "1" vote without a comment.

Other possibilities:

5)Every week, correct the averages by throwing out the top and the bottom 10% of the votes for each story. If this destroy some top votes, another possibility is,

6) Each week correct by finding the central cluster, if any, and throwing out the votes far away from it. For example, taking the average only in the central cluster where 70% of the votes are. For another example, throw out those votes more than two standard deviations from the mean.

It would be interesting to hear comments and other suggestions.

mathematics

hi Abashed-Dreamer......

Do you work with math/numbers in your regular job?
Very very eye-opening insight on the "1" vote
problem! I thought that the interesting point was
throwing out the top and bottom votes as you
mentioned in your reply. That aspect reminds me
of when ice skaters get judged for a program they
did and depending on the competition the high and
low scores get thrown out.......

I thank you for your insight, and I think that quite a few
people would be giving more input about this topic after
reading your suggestions, including the ones given
here before on this thread. :)

don't forget...difernt works get differnet numbers of vote to score from. for this reason z scores shound be used to standardize the distribution curves... that's more fair to everyone. um i think...i really need to work harder in my stats class.

THANK GOD I never was required to take Statistics
in college! I've heard that class is a bitch! :)
