It is no mere coincidence that Evangelicals lean conservative.
The New Testament itself is an anti-government tract in that it demonizes any kind of secular government as something not of god, not for believers to strive to change but to live under with patience, and we'll certainly always have the poor among us if social change is only legitimate through the lens of the New Testament. Those in government calling this a Christian nation, probably always now Republicans, understand thoroughly the implications of what they are saying, and they reap the benefits of exploiting other people's ignorance and irrationality by using the language of magical thinking.
