Okay we've discussed music and books, has anyone seen any good movies lately or do you have some favorites that you think others might like to see.
Is there a specific genre you choose?
Do you prefer to go to the cinema or rent or own?

Let's share, shall we?

~A~

ps...maybe I should ask if anyone has "starred" in a movie?:D

Voted but

I liked 'Calendar Girls'.

I like films with a plot, dire B-movies, and Buster Keaton.

My all time favourite is Japanese - 'Tampopo' which pokes fun at many movie ideas. It is a Japanese noodle trucker Western with gangsters. Don't watch it on an empty stomach.

I'm a huge movie nut so I love all sorts of movies. And I mean all sorts of genres. Even romance or b-horror-movie-flicks.
I often rent films on dvd and watch them at home but there's nothing better than the theatre. It's just the feeling, you know.
It's a great place to be. Great atmosphere. And name a better place for making out than the theatre :)

As fars as good movies are concerned, by now everyone knows that my favourite is LOTR. So I won't bother you with that.
I think a very good movie that everyone should see is 'Memento' by Christopher Nolan starring Guy Pearce, Joe Pantoliano and Carrie Ann-Moss. It's a great independent Thriller, film noir stylish, that's is the most clever movie I've ever seen. You'll talk about it for weeks or months.
It's about a guy who searches the killer of his wife. But he has lost his short term memory so he knows everything about his past but can't make new memories.
So the trick is, the story is shown backwards in time. It actually starts with him killing the guy he was looking for.
It's a wonderful masterpiece.

Ok, I think I've wasted enough of your time, thnx for reading.

Snoopy, cut, that's a wrap !

I finally got Akira Kurasowa's "Dreams" on dvd. I love japanese and chinese films. I'm a big Gong Li fan.

I have a thing for indepent films also, I love any thing off the beaten path.

I love old classic's and I can recite almost all of "A Christmas Story"

I don't go for overly graphic or violent films.

Jean de Florette and it's sequel, Manon de Source (or something like that) are great films.

Limettes!!!!.....that is so cute.
I love kids movies more than the kids some times. I remember when "the Nightmare Before Christmas" came out and 8 of us took my friends son to see it and enjoyed it more than he did.

I also have to have the monster bucket of popcorn at the theatre, and I usually don't share, it's like crack in a bucket.

I picked comedies, but only because I could only pick one. I love movies almost as much as I love reading and I love all kinds.

I enjoy movies of all kinds. But my favorites are rarely the award winners. Well I enjoy them too, but the ones that stick with me are mainly just average.

I used to love to go to the theater, but the last time I went it cost me over $25 for a ticket, drink and box of sour patch kids. The only time I must see a film in the theater now is if it's all about sound and graphics. Although, that may be phased out shortly as I have a larger television now and my surround sound system kicks heiney. Plus, you can never underestimate the power of pause. Potty breaks can take as long as needed and you don't feel like you have to run through the halls like a moron trying not to miss too much.

Personal faves: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Fish Called Wanda, The Fifth Element, Blazing Saddles, Airplane, Dying Young, Memento (creepy, but fascinating), Indiana Jones Series, Ferris Beuhler's Day Off, The Breakfast Club...

I prefer to read about serious things instead of watch films about them. For some reason the intensity is never what I imagine it should be. :( Probably why most of my favorite movies are light-hearted.

I watch everything and anything except porn. Not that I don't like porn, but because almost all porn is, movie wise, just plain bad.

I never manage to go out to the movies without the kids so the last one i saw was lotr Return of the King, which we all loved. Most of the time i'm easygoing about what i watch, although i refuse to watch anything with sylvester stallone in it.

The first Highlander movie, Braveheart, the eighties bratpack movies, especially The Outsiders, Coyote Ugly (only because my kids wont hang around if its on... guarantees me some peace), Perfect Storm, Darkness Falls and The Ring, which scared me a bit... the only movie ever to give me a nightmare was 8MM with Nicholas Cage.

Lucky,

Did you hear that they're relasing a 25th anniversary DVD of Blazing Saddles - with the 'bean scene' in surround sound?

Lime

I love "Blazing Saddles", I will watch for it. I like "The Usual Suspects", the end blew me away. Also "The Odd Couple" and "Grumpy Old Men." Matthau and Lemmon are magic together.

I really love the old movies too, "Mr. Skeffington", "It Happened One Night", "Casablanca", "The Quiet Man."

In various ways we've been asked about our fave or worst films a few times. That's OK, but this time I'll answer differently.

I will see any film with Judy Dench, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Helen Mirran, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Michael Caine, Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes, Vanessa Redgrave, Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Hughes Anglade, Sean Penn, Clint Eastwood.

The above I will see and have seen in some crap films, but they are always worth the price of admission (or rental).

I will not see any film with Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Cruise, Syl. Stallone, Julia Roberts, Winona Ryder, Demi Moore, Michael Douglas, Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner (and I'm pretty tired of Tom Hanks).

There are two exceptions: I have seen Scorcese's "Age of Innocence" several times, it's a poem of a film. Ryder is perfect (as herself I believe) in her role. Discounting Paltrow, I enjoy "Shakespeare in Love" for the rest, plus it offers such fine dialogue and Judy Dench as QE2.

As for those actors resting in peace (or elsewhere), I watch anything with Greta Garbo, Cary Grant, Ch. Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Jean Harlow, oh the list is too long and I haven't even thought of foreign films or fave directors. Basta.

No I hadn't heard that. And thank you for telling me. My father-in-law loaned me his version, but I was ready to give it back and buy one just like it. Now I'll hold off. I love surround sound. Thanks again.

Can I come over and see it when you get it? Can the kids come too? They're crazy for Mel Brooks' films. We'll bring the popcorn.

Lime,

PS - Do you like yours buttered?

Everyone's welcome. I've got plenty of popcorn and lots of butter! ;) Perhaps we should run the full gammut of Mel Brooks' masterpieces. :D

Cool thread, Abs. Couldn't vote in your poll, though. No option for "Horror/Thriller/Action/Suspense/General Scariness and All Out Blood 'n' Gore."

I have many favourites, too numerous to list, but I'll give you a sample of my DVD collection...

Event Horizon - Wonderfully atmospheric film; Sam Neill was awesome.

Alien and Aliens - Both classics and wicked.

The Shawshank Redemption - Damn fine film.

Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of the Ring) - Love it.

MIB - Brilliant.

Gladiator - Cool.

American Beauty - Very clever; superb acting.

Contact - I love this film, great story and Jody Foster is cool.

Swordfish - Gangster bad-ass stuff.

The Matrix (all three) - Kick-ass wicked.

Blade - Fucking excellent!

Pulp Fiction - AWESOME!

Reservoir Dogs - KICKING!

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - The best British bad-ass film, ever!

American Pie - Hilarious (yes, I like funny stuff, too. :D)

Oh, there's loads more, but sod it, you get the general idea. :D

Lou

Did anyone see the one based on the life of Sylvia Plath yet? Want to know if it's worth the rent.

I'm a complete goofball most of the time, so usually go for comedies.....

Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail is my absolute, all time favorite. Have gone through not one, but two copies of it already (the sound goes away on VHS after so many viewings....)

The Hunt for Red October - Sean Connery will always be sexy no matter how old he gets, plus its a great suspense movie.

Braveheart, of course.

Anything with Christopher Walken in it - such a consummate bad guy.

Old School makes me laugh til I cry - the scene where the guy gets hit with the tranquilizer gun sent me into hysterics.

Jackie Chan movies, even the old ones, are worth watching just for the outtakes at the end.

Well Lou, I for myself tend to judge people on their tastes in terms of movies (at least to some extend). And I really like your list, which makes you even more symphatic. :)

I especially like that you like films from Tarantino, or Blade or American Beauty. :) And of course LOTR. :D
But if you love Lock, Stock then why isn't their Snatch???
But I have one exception to make. I hated the matrix sequels. But you shall be forgiven with that.

First must say: KILL BILL V.2 FINALLY comes out this Friday :D

I am with you on most P, but must say, I will also watch anything with Johnny Depp, Nathalie Portman or Emmanuelle Beart 'cuz - well YUM. Magnolias was amazing, even with Tom Cruise :)

I personally can't bear Rene Zellwhatever.

I am a Fosse fan :) mostly, but love anything by John Waters, PT Anderson, Bergman, love French films, particularly French New Wave, any film noir, but especially Sunset Boulevard, and 12 Monkey's, Fight Club, The Hours.

The most recent piece of shit I saw was "The Secret Window," and just rented "Timeline," and "Tank Girl . . again" 'cuz talk about cult. Also, whenever I can watch, watch again anything by Kenneth Anger - I do :D

And well, that's only the half of it :)

If you like French cinema what are your thoughts on 'Amélie' and 'A la folie...pas du tout' (sorry if I mispelled anything)
