Jessica checked her tired reflection in the mirror, she wasn’t sure she was ready to go back to work but she knew that she had no other choice if it meant she kept a roof over her families head and food in their mouths.
It had been eight long and painful months since she witnessed the death of the man she loved after they responded to what would have been considered a routine house fire yet to Jessica it only seemed like yesterday.
Tying her hair up into a high ponytail she took several deep breaths. She had been thankful for all the help that her friends and family had given her but that didn’t change anything that didn’t bring back the man she loved.
She just hoped and prayed that when she arrived at the firehouse people didn’t make too much of a fuss or she wasn’t sure she’d be able to cope. She just wanted things to be as normal as possible and not remind her of what she lost.
Grabbing her bag she made her way out of the house, making sure to lock up before she jumped into her car and headed in to work. Her heart was in her mouth and nerves were pooling in her stomach, she just hoped that she could get through the day without any major problems.
She felt tears sting her eyes as she remember their first date again as though it was only yesterday. She had just graduated from the Academy and was the first female firefighter to be posted at their firehouse. He’d made her feel so welcome and part of the family she’d instantly developed a crush on him.
The bonus to that being he was also incredibly handsome with dirty blonde hair and the brightest blue eyes that seemed to read her like an open book. They were due to get married over Christmas but that dream had been shattered along with a lot more. At least she still had a part of him in their twin boys. They were their fathers double and that sometimes made her heart ache.
Pulling into the firehouse she stayed in the car her hands frozen to the steering wheel doubts already forming in her mind. She wasn’t sure she could do this, she wasn’t ready to put on a brave face and pretend that nothing happened.
Closing her eyes she felt the tears slowly fall only to be startled back to reality by the sound of something gently knocking on her window.
