Does anyone have experience posting in the Letters and Transcripts category? I’m working on a story told entirely as a journal kept by the main character. If the category were based on the story content and the sex, the only option would be Erotic Couplings. For me, that would consign the story to oblivion.

Taken literally, and based on the site’s description of the category, L&T would accept either an exchange of written passages among two or more people, or a recording of written or spoken statements, compiled by a neutral observer. Would this exclude a handwritten account by one person, intended never to be read by anyone else?

In practical terms, the content would read much the same as a first-person narration of past experiences...except that the journal itself might take on mcguffin status. The story doesn’t have a real plot yet, with anything like a conclusion. In what I’ve currently thrown at the wall, however, the main character (in a discussion of boundaries with a potential partner in whoopee) mentions that she’s keeping a handwritten journal, and asks if he wants to be kept out of it. He says it doesn’t matter to him, but she later suspects that his awareness of it is advancing from the back of his mind. I don’t yet know if hilarity, or anything else, would ensue. So far, though, what I’ve written includes a good sex scene. That should never go to waste.

I posted in L&T once. It was the fourth part of a five-part series, with the other parts in other categories. (It made sense to me at the time.) For some reason, about six months after publication, the site folks moved it from L&T to Romance (the same category as the fifth part, but not the first three). This may have been because, in addition to verbatim inclusion of the characters’ correspondence, there was some brief narrative about the characters as they wrote, read, and Did Other Things. But, six months?

I've tried it out twice, once as a single long letter / confession where the reader must inevitably wonder what the eventual recipient will make of it; and once as a sequence of short letters between two sisters, in a very Jane Austen style, with the added benefit of one letter arriving too late to prevent the events related in another letter.

Why do people dismiss Erotic Couplings?

I've got a bunch of stories there that are in my second quartile of story rankings. Sure, not as good scores as my top 25%, but by no means my lowest. It's not such a bad category, for me, anyway.

It is an interesting category, and one with its own challenges. I don't know your goals or hopes out of your stories, if simply more readers, EC is likely a better choice.

For LT I think everything depends on your set-up. How will you involve the reader? For my efforts, I had to make the correspondence be three-dimensional (the receiver of the note had to have a personality that is reflected in what the letter-writer communicates.)

But the arena is wide open for approaches, could be revealing and reflective, and one where a lot of hinting at backstory is better than full-fledged divulgences.

I'm happy to read a draft or discuss more, but the category is an intriguing one and worth contributing to. Afraid I don't know the 'mcguffin status' part.

I wouldn't dismiss EC out of hand. Until relatively recently I had more stories in EC than any other category.

There are a lot of stories posted to EC and maybe not that many readers, so stories can get lost in the wash. The results are erratic. EC may also be thought of as the category for new authors (it was for me). Voting may be heavy or nearly absent. The readers may be appreciative or not. My stories in EC got little attention once they were off the new list and/or contest pages.

BUT ... Given a choice between the unpredictable results from EC and the predictably low attention in LT, maybe EC is a better choice.

Recently, I wrote a cheating wives story for LW as a lark, just wanting to see the comments, which I was assured would be awful. I wrote it in the form of a letter from the lover to the husband. "Dear Steve: I Just Fucked Your Wife". Because of the format, it got placed in L&T by the powers that be. So anything you write in that format, regardless of content, will likely end up there.

In the end, it got a ton of comments, some from people who post here, which were generally quite positive. There were a few that one might have expected for LW, but none were that horrible, at least to me.

So, it's not necessarily a bad place.

Thanks to all for your responses. To EB and NW: I wrote that "for me" EC would be oblivion. This is my experience with my stories. I might still post there, if a story fit better there than anywhere else.

I’m a L&T fan. My best scoring story (Hey Twister) is in the category. It hasn’t had nearly as many reads or votes as other stories, but it has been well received.
