Jan. 6 committee witness on Thursday called out Democrats, specifically naming committee member Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-M.D., for objecting to certifying previous election results.

Former Judge J. Michael Luttig, an informal advisor to then-Vice President Mike Pence, and Greg Jacob, former counsel to the VP, testified at the third public hearing, which focused on former President Donald Trump's efforts to convince Pence to not certify the electoral college votes on Jan. 6.

Trump's legal team, including attorney John Eastman, viewed the 12th Amendment as giving a constitutional path forward by allowing the vice president to reject the votes and send it back to state legislatures for debate.

"We had all seen that in Congress, in 2000, in 2004, in 2016, there had been objections raised to various states, and those had even been debated in 2004," Jacob told Congress on Thursday. All objections were notably years in which a Republican won the presidential election.

"And so here you have an amendment that says nothing about objecting or rejecting, and yet we did have some recent practice of that happening within the terms of the electoral canon," he said.

Here's one problem with this; no; 50 governors would NOT have railroaded Trump and Pence out of office. The governors of Republican states would have unconditionally backed him, if for no other reason than out of fear of retribution (As he would be governing with absolute power with no accountability, as an illegitimately installed despot at that point), and the Democratic governed states (Washington, California, Illinois, etc.) would have rebelled- it would have gotten real ugly. Had Trump remained in power after Jan 20, the riots and protests by the disenfranchised voters who just saw their votes overturned would have made Jan 6 look like a hippie drum circle by comparison- it could have gotten really bad. And Trump has already gotten away with far more than Hillary or Bill Clinton has ever had, which is part of why we are where we are.

What you need to understand is, what happened on Jan 6th was very, very serious and for a healthy democracy to survive, there needs to be severe consequences for attempting to topple it. Would 50 governors have railroaded trump and pence out of office for that? You say that with far too much certainty there. Besides the whole point of the green bay sweep (the actual coup attempt) was an effort to buy trump more time to muddy people's faith in the accuracy of the election results.
