I picked up my handwritten directions and glanced over it again. Turn right at "Sunshine Aviation Inc" sign, half mile down...can't miss it.

Looking at the worn sign, I wondered what I was getting myself into. For my 34th birthday, my best friend gave me a gift certificate for an hour of free flying lessons. Learn to be a Pilot, it read. I somehow got the feeling, I'm a victim of a re-gifter.

Go, she convinced me. You need to go out and do something exciting. It's true, I was in dire need of some excitement. My life consists of work work work and no play since my divorce six months ago.

So, here I am.

Hesitating a bit, I thought what the hell. I'm not doing anything anyway.

I found the building with no problem. I guided my car next to the lonely truck in the parking lot.

I stepped out and stretched my legs. Dressed in my Calvin jeans, snug white tshirt, black boots and Tom Cruise's Top Gun imitation shades, I thought I looked like a pilot.

I stepped in the office and noticed a lonely desk.

"Hellooooooooooo...." I called out.

interrupted

I thought I had locked that damn door, I mumbled as I turned my tallywacker still hanging out! OH DAMN! a girl yet! Pulling my tally back in I tried to zip up and caught the tip in my zipper.

Damn...God Owwwww, Shit it hurt!!!!

What the hell do you want? I yelled at her, nearly scaring the glasses off her pretty face....Flying lessons? You're at the wrong damn door I screamed as I finally shoved it back in....

oh geez.....

knew i had too much to drink, sorry!

now where is that damn door i mutteref as I walked past the hot looking pilot lady

sorry i mumbled as i wandered out into the freash air, now where did i leave my bicycle?

oh yeah i dont own a bicycle i drove my car........now i wonder where it is?

hey lady? awww, never mind I'll find it........Bye bye

The sign over the door read 'Sunshine Aviation, Inc.' It was a bit weathered, but it was all mine. Oh, I should introduce myself. 'Thor Eversen,' just Thor to everyone. A 50ish male, about 6', 185, with piercing blue eyes...as blue as the Florida sky that was outside my little office. I was tucked away on a corner of North Perry Airport in Hollywood, Florida. I owned an older, but clean, Piper Cherokee 140. It was painted maroon and white. Triple three zero papa (N 3330P to non-pilots) was used for my flight instruction. I also owned an Archer and an Arrow that were rentals I had on leaseback. In addition, I did a little contract charter work for the big outfit next door. I loved flying.....I was in the Air Force for awhile and flew for several outfits before I bought this little business three years ago. I liked to teach the next generation of birdmen (birdpeople?) the joy of aviation. I had several thousand hours, all ratings including a CFI-I. The radio I had tuned to the tower frequency was muttering in the background, 'Cessna 2374 Whiskey, cleared for a straight in niner right, you are number one to land.'

I glanced up as the door opened and stood fairly quickly. A petite, 30 something brunette was standing in the doorway. She had the usual 'what the hell am I doing here expression.' In her hand she was holding one of the gift certificates that I sold - loss leaders - for introductory flying lessons. 'Learn to fly. An hour of instruction with a fully qualified instructor. $25.'

I smiled my most happy smile and said, cleverly, "I bet you are here to learn how to fly."

A quick glance around the old delapitated office made me a little nervous. I just hope his plane looks better than this office.

I bet you are here to learn how to fly

His warm smile put me at ease instantly. I couldn't help matching his with mine.

"Why yes...I'm Amanda Brooks......we spoke on the phone......ermmmmm......my friends call me Mandy."

"Yes, I've been waiting for you. Fill these forms out. Just some minor questions, for insurance purpose."

I sat at the nearest chair, crossed my legs and set the pad on my lap and started reading the forms.

With my shades on, I was able to observe him discreetly. Not bad, I thought. Middle-aged, tall, lean, neat haircut. Obvious a military man. And his eyes. The most beautiful sky blue eyes. Eyes, every woman would kill for.

I couldn't concentrate on the forms staring before me. My mind started imagining his eyes and his warm smile looking down at me. His voice saying my name.

Oh my god, what am I doing? I'm here for flying lessons. Not only that, a man like that probaly has a wife and 3 kids waiting for him at home.

With a sigh, I returned back to my forms.

Thor - the instructor

"Mandy, a nice name." I picked up the forms - release of liability, application for third class R/T license, and so on... "Mandy. lets go right out and get started." I pointed to the door and we walked out into the sunshine. I put on my sunglasses (aviator's amber, what did you think?) and pointed to triple three zero papa. "There she is. We will do our safety walkaround. Lesson # 1 - it is much easier to fix a problem on the ground." {completing the preflight and talking about the plane at the same time}.

I looked at her again. She looked good in the designer jeans and T-shirt... 'Quit it Thor, she is probably married with three kids..'

Pointing to the wing, I said, "Climb in, Mandy. The pilot flies from the left seat." With a smile, I took her elbow and guided her into the 140.........

Did he just electricute me? I stared at his blue eyes from the shock I felt from his hand on my elbow. But the innocent smile on his face told me it was my imagination. How do I explain the shivers all over my body?

With just a slight push on my elbow, he seemed to lift me effortlessly. Sitting comfortable, he hopped in next to me and started explaining the instuments.

I have to learn all this in one hour? I will never remember this. I tried to concentrate on his every word but my mind kept thinking about how close he was to me. How close his head kept leaning into me.

Thor - the instructor

"Enough of the instruction for now....this will come clear as we go along. Lets go fly" With that< I buckled in, saw that she was, and flipped the starter switch. The 150 HP Lycoming engine sputtered, and then caught. I picked up the mike and said "North Perry tower, Piper triple three zero papa ready to taxi." The response was immediate. "Triple three zero papa taxi to 27 left, winds 250 at 10, altimeter 29.98" I set the altimeter and advanced the throttle, steering with the rudder pedals and explaining to Mandy as I taxied. "Triple three zero papa, cleared for takeoff 27L. Straight out departure approved. Have a nice flight." I acknowledged and said, "Here we go, put your hands on the wheel and follow through."

As we accelerated down the 3000' runway, I was aware of her scent - female, a hint of jasmine.....

I can see the excitement rise up to his face as the engine fired. His eyes darkened to a fierce ocean wave. He seemed to look 20 years younger.

Catching his excitement, the motor purred through my body, causing me to wriggle in my seat.

Hang on he said. I held on to the wheel as tight as I could as the plane sped down the runway, pulling my heart along. I felt the wheels leave the ground, lifting my body, my heart soaring.

I turned to him, caught him watching me. I threw my head back and released a maniacal laugh.

Thor - the instructor

.....her laugh jolted me from the plane for a moment. Then I realized that she was not frightened, just exulting in the joy of flying. Most new students were terrified for the first few lessons. I climbed straight out to 3500', heading due west to the 'Glades and a practice area. As I flew from the right seat, I kept up a steady patter of instruction. I will admit that her closeness was a bit distracting, but flying requires complete attention.

As I scanned for traffic, I said, "Put your hands on the wheel, and your feet on the rudder pedals. Now, when I tell you, you fly us straight and level."

"Yes sir Captain! Hands on the wheel. Check. Feet on the rudder. Check. I'm ready when you are Captain."

She quickly steadied and held altitude amazingly well for a new student. I had her make gentle turns to the left and right and then I had her roll out on a specific heading. 'Amazing, for a new student'. I did not throw out too many compliments as I did not want her to become overconfident. We continued to fly westerly, further into the 'Glades. Alligator Alley stretched off toward Fort Myers, a ribbon of concrete amont the greenery. I noticed that the steady Lycoming engine had skipped a beat...twice. Perhaps a touch of water in the fuel...............

As she looked out through the windscreen, I let my eyes drift over her again. A smile curved her lips, dark hair glistening in the bright light, breasts outlined by the T-shirt, hips encased and accented by her designer jeans..... 'Watch it Thor, we are in an airplane, not in a living room'.

I can feel my body humming in tune to the engine. The vibration was spreading through my body in all directions. Up my stomach, to my chest. Down my back to my legs. I started wriggling in my seat. It was the combination of the engine and this man sitting next to me.

I could feel his heat radiating from his body. Making our tight quarters warmer. And it didn't help, that he smelled so damn good. Woodsy. Manly.

For a moment the engine seemed to sputter, causing my body to stiffen. I turned to him in panic. There was a moment of worry, but then his face relaxed. Making me comfortable again.

I leaned back and relaxed my grip on the wheel. Enjoying the bright blue sky. Reminds of his eyes.

I had to know. I turned to him and asked. "So Thor...are you married?"

Thor - the instructor

"So Thor...are you married?"

My voice seemed almost disembodied as I answered, "Not anymore Mandy. Its a bit painful. I was in 'Nam, flying F-4's from Thailand. I was the wing commander. We had nasty, dirty missions in the North. Anyhow, one day I came back from Hanoi, opened my mail, and found that she had decided to leave me. I found out later that it was some stockbroker who had a BMW and was taking care of the 'home front.' Anyway, that is an old story from long ago. And, no, we had no kids."

I glanced over at her and continued, "I suppose that you have several kids and an Adonis for a husband?" There it was again. A little hitch in the engine sound. I thought that I should practice what I preach and know where I would land in an emergency. I scanned the flat terrain ahead and began to think about heading back....

"Not anymore Mandy..........."

I felt a flutter in my stomach. It was too good to be true. BUT, I tell myself, he must have women waiting for him in every town. What woman could resist those eyes? I know I can't.

"No, not anymore. Single now for six months. And Adonis he was not! We were childhood sweethearts, my first kiss, my first everything...."

I stopped. He wasn't even paying attention to me. Oh well, I thought, guess he's not interested. That's too bad. This is the first time I've thought about a man in this way.

Thor - the instructor

........cough........cough.....and the SILENCE! It quit, without warning. "We'll be fine, Mandy, I can land this thing on a lily pad." I did not bother telling her that the 'Glades were not exactly the place I would have chosen.

I banked toward the small - as far as I knew - abandoned strip about three miles ahead. I had used it from time to time for touch and goes with students.

We were about 3000', decending. I tried to restart the engine - carb heat, full rich, but it would not catch....

I had plenty of altitude and I was a lot calmer than I had been over Hanoi.......

"What was that????" Whipping my head to Thor.

We'll be fine Mandy........

"Thor, what the hell is going on???????"

The ground fell from under my feet. Oh God, we're crashing. Squeezing my eyes tight.....I started saying the only prayer I remembered from my childhood.

"Our father, who art in heaven....." I kept staring down at the green ground nearing me at rapid speed.

"Hallowed be thy name....thy kingdom....." My head whipped to Thor and surprisingly he looked too calm, as if he was in a dream. "come, thy will be done."

"Thor......wake up....oh shit...WAKE UP." My arm grabbing his pulling him towards me....."oh fuckkkkkkkkk...we're gonna die."

Just then, I felt something taking over me. My body weightless...I could no longer think...I feel soooo sleepy. Blackness.

........chirp.....the tires met the cracked asphalt of the abandoned strip. Mandy had apparently passed out...fainted, only, I hoped. I applied light breaking and parked alongside the strip, in the grass. I reached for the radio to see if I could raise someone. I had no time during the dead stick landing. I tried on 121.5, the emergency frequency, but nothing. I turned off the switch to conserve the battery and turned to Mandy. "Wake up, wake up," but she did not stir. Her breathing was good and her color seemed fine. I reached into the back and grabbed a thermos of water - I always carried one. I poured a little into a handkerchief and began to dab her forehead and neck.

I felt myself floating. Floating towards a light. A distant voice calling me for me.

I didn't want to interrupt this peaceful feeling, but the voice got louder.

Wake up...wake up....

I tried to tell him, leave me alone. But no sound.

Something cold was trickling down my face. Soothing. It must be raining. I raised my chin to feel the rain. Wait, that's not rain.

Mandy dear....wake up

Why is that voice familiar?? I can't quite place it.

When I opened my eyes, a pair of the bluest eyes were staring down at me in worry. hhmmmmm...sexy eyes. Nice warm smile.

Thor........

My hands cupped his face, my fingers tracing his lips.

Thor - the instructor

...her eyes fluttered, thank heavens. As they opened, she reached up and touched my face - cupping my chin. I could not help myself. I bent and brushed her lips with mine.

I unbuckled her seat belt and said, "I'm glad you are back...let's get you out of here and out of the sun." I wondered if she had even realized I kissed her.....

I knelt on my seat and awkwardly slid my arm under her legs and around her shoulders. It was cramped, but I lifted her off the seat and then I carefully climbed off the wing - cradling her in my arms. She still seemed a bit woozy. I decided to put her down in the only shade around, the patch under the wing of the plane....

I felt my body lifting, floating in air. Wrapping my arms around his neck, snuggling against his chest, inhaling his scent, I felt so..... safe. I wanted to stay this way forever.

His chest leaned into me to set me down, on something soft. Felt like my bed. My arms were clinging to him, I couldn't let him go.

"Thor...............", I whispered.

His face was shadowing over mine. A question in his eyes.

Thor - the instructor

"It may be awhile before someone comes and gets us. I could not reach anyone by radio. The airport folks will miss us eventually." As I spoke I slid my leather flight jacket under Mandy's head and mopped her brow with my wet handkerchief. Her arms clung to me......she was still disoriented, I thought. I could not resist....my lips found hers and began a kiss that seemed to last for hours......

My arms pulled him closer. His tongue pried my lips, entering with gentle force, causing a soft moan to escape my body while the shivers ran down my body. Our tongues danced together for what seemed like an eternity. Neither one of us in a hurry. Just savoring each other.

Thor- the instructor

Mandy responded......and I was transported. I slid to the ground next to her; my body half over hers. Our tongues danced and explored in the exquisite dance of passion. Every time it was different, but this time.....I stopped intellectualizing and let myself be lost in the moment......
