A History lesson....Cry for Me, Argentina

In the early 20th century, Argentina was one of the richest countries in the World. While Great Britain 's maritime power and its far-flung empire had propelled it to a dominant position among the World's industrialized nations, only the United States challenged Argentina for the position of the world's second-most powerful economy.

It was blessed with abundant agriculture, vast swaths of rich farmland laced with navigable rivers and an accessible port system. Its level of industrialization was higher than many European countries: railroads, automobiles and telephones were commonplace.

In 1916, a new president was elected. H ipólito Irigoyen had formed a party called The Radicals under the banner f "fundamental change" with an appeal to the middle class.

Among Irigoyen's changes: mandatory pension insurance, mandatory health insurance, and support for low-income housing construction to stimulate the economy. Simply put, the state assumed economic control of a vast swath of the country's operations and began assessing new payroll taxes to fund its efforts.

With an increasing flow of funds into these entitlement programs, the government's payouts soon became overly generous.

Before long its outlays surpassed the value of the taxpayers' contributions. Put simply, it quickly became under-funded, much like the United States Social Security and Medicare programs.

The death knell for the Argentine economy, however, came with the election of Juan Perón. Perón had a fascist and corporatist upbringing; he and his charismatic wife aimed their populist rhetoric at the nation's rich. This targeted group "swiftly expanded to cover most of the propertied middle classes, who became an enemy to be defeated and humiliated." Under Perón, the size of government bureaucracies exploded through massive programs of social spending and by encouraging the growth of labor unions. High taxes and economic mismanagement took their inevitable toll even after Perón had been driven from office. But his populist rhetoric and "contempt for economic realities" lived on. Argentina 's federal government continued to spend far beyond its means. Hyperinflation exploded in 1989, the final stage of a process characterized by "industrial protectionism, redistribution of income based on increased wages, and growing state intervention in the economy.."

The Argentinean government's practice of printing money to pay off its public debts had crushed the economy. Inflation hit 3000%, reminiscent of the Weimar Republic . Food riots were rampant; stores were looted; the country descended into chaos. And by 1994, Argentina 's public pensions -- the equivalent of our Social Security -- had imploded. The payroll tax had increased from 5% to 26%, but it wasn't enough. In addition, Argentina had implemented a value-added tax (VAT), new income taxes, a personal tax on wealth, and additional revenues based upon the sale of public enterprises. These crushed the private sector, further damaging the economy..

A government-controlled "privatization" effort to rescue seniors pensions was attempted. But, by 2001, those funds had also been raided by the government, the monies replaced by Argentina 's defaulted government bonds.
By 2002, "government fiscal irresponsibility induced a national economic crisis as severe as America 's Great Depression." In 1902 Argentina was one of the world's richest countries.. Little more than a hundred years later, it is poverty-stricken country, struggling to meet its debt obligations amidst a drought.

We've seen this movie before. The Democrats' populist plans can't possibly work, because the government will bankrupt everything it touches. History teaches us that ObamaCare and unfunded entitlement programs will be utter, complete disasters in the future.

Today's Democrats are guilty of more than stupidity; they are enslaving future generations to poverty and misery. And they will be long gone when it all implodes. They will be as cold and dead as Juan Perón when the piper must ultimately be paid.

This is a very good perspective on where we are headed unless we very quickly change that bunch of idiots in Washington !!!

One year later, I still think you did a masterful job of C&P someone else's schtick.

Still waitin' on that hyperinflation that Mr. Field and Ms. Kraft promised us if we elected a colored president.

It is excessive spending habits of the Democrat controlled Congress the last two years of the Bush administration and the first two of the Obama administration that has created the debt which will inevitably lead to the predicted inflation, not the "colored" nature of the president.

Don't understand economics? Play the race card.

I do not know about a default in bonds, but I guess anything is possible.

Any Democrats looking for a good Argentinian red should pick up a bottle of the Don david Cab...it's excellent value and really quite delicious.

It's every bit as good as Wolf Blass Gold Label, which has a Republican Wolfowitz tang to it and besides, it has a hawk on the label.

So... a right wing government put in place by the US that then destroyed its country's economy...is the same as the Obama adminsitration

Hello Karen, your cake is looking as lovely as ever.

The mayor of Miami lost his job tonite after voters recalled him for increasing property taxes, raising the pay of public employees, and giving his staff LARGE pay raises.

No Tea Baggers in Miami...all are Democrats.

Cool. One more step towards fiscal sanity. It will take many years to fix this mess the democrats created.

You should really research posts before making ignorant comments.

A Republican, Alvarez was first elected mayor in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. County commissioners can now either appoint an executive to serve out his term through late 2012 or call a special election.

The Miami-Dade recall bid, spearheaded by a billionaire anti-tax crusader, is the latest in a growing number of similar such attempts across the country to remove officials from office by voters angered by everything from taxes to the salaries of elected officials and union rights.

Miami-Dade County, which includes Miami, is home to about 2.5 million people.

The Cuban-born Alvarez came under criticism last year when Miami-Dade, saddled with record high 12 percent unemployment and the same budget deficits faced by many local and state governments, introduced a property tax increase to help fund vital services including police and public schools.

The 14 percent tax hike was imposed despite double-digit declines in real estate values as south Florida was hammered by the U.S. housing and mortgage foreclosure crisis.

I know, Liberals blaming Bush, right?

Mayor Alvarez used the money to give public workers sweet pay raises, gave his staff large pay raises, and bought himself an expensive BMW to ride around in. The vote is 88% opposed to him and the commissioners who lost their gigs.

The Democrats arent good at math so they may not learn anything from the results. In 2012 if the Democrats lose everything, everywhere, they'll keep whining for more taxes and discounting the whole country as racists.

Sounds like the natives are restless.

Indeed they are. The problem is Democrat leaders. Theyre like cross-dressers who wear their skirts too short. It dont take Superman to see that things arent what they seem.

My newspaper pitched a hissy-fit today about govmint spending. It insists that the spending continue, full speed ahead, and that Democrat pols man-up and keep the party going for government employees. Its the formula for a massacre in 2012 but the Democrats arent good at math.
