Powerful writer.... I didn’t even know he existed until you posted this Ishtar, everyday Aussie in someways have so internalised the beach and drinking culture that we forget about the arts, mind you I’m simply working class scum surrounded by the same, and poetic culture is derided for the most part, I hid my writing here from everyone until only the last 6months, people in my real life had no idea and I was too ashamed to share
I also was unfamiliar with Les Murray so thank you for sharing, Ishtat, even if it is sad news. I found his page, where one can click through and read his poems. The Poetry Foundation also has some biographical info, analysis of his writing style, and some poems.
I agree with tods: the writing is powerful and his subject matter feels somewhat exotic to me, living so differently on the on the other side of the world. I'd love to hear what his poetry means to those of you who are Australian. What makes his poetry representative of your world? Are there any particular poems you feel best represent him?
I knew Les Murray had been nominated for the Nobel Prize, and I'd looked his verse novel Fredy Neptune, but I hadn't really read any of his poetry. So, yeah, echoing Angie, it would be great ishtat if you at least linked in or posted what you think of as some of his best poems.
I feel somewhat guilty about English language poems not written by USA authors. I think most Americans are aware of a few British authors, maybe a few Canadian authors, but that's about it. I personally have found a few Australian authors, but only because of my interest in a particular form.
Murray's work deserves more general recognition in the English-speaking world.
