societal gender norms. The opposite is true where it is more acceptable for women to show strong emotion and not so much for men. you see this a lot in situations where a death has occurred. Where it is extremely acceptable for the woman to show extreme emotional distress and cry, but the man is supposed to be supportive by being the rock.
