Just received this update:

On April 3rd, 2007, the LPDC has received confirmation of Leonard Peltier's official nomination for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. This year 181 candidates have been registered. The name of the Prize recipient for 2007 will be announced in mid-October.

We want to thank the people who nominated Leonard for this prestigious award.

Respectfully,
Leonard Peltier Defense Committee

This is the second time he has been nominated. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I don't think there has been any Nobel Prizes given to political prisoners who are still being incarcerated. But Leo definitely deserves it. He also deserves to be released and apologized.

Our gov't would have to admit they were wrong for him to be released - something I don't ever see happening, even though Amnesty International has been screaming for his release for years.

He came about 4 hours away from a pardon from Clinton, but it didn't happen.

Don't get me started, or I'll bore you to tears. This is one issue that gets me fired up every single time.

Then I should get you started. Your getting fired up is definitely what I need right now. I'm sitting alone in my room with nothing to do. :D

I remember the guy, a Peltier's supporter, who was supposed to fund Hilary Clinton's campaign changed his mind and funded Obama's instead. Poor the lady, all because her husband didn't apologize Peltier.

I have a thread about it here , and then I wrote an essay about it that you can read from my stories page (link in my sig) called "And Justice For All."

If I have a hero, he's the one.

Peltier aside................. I have NO use for a prize from an organization that presents a "peace" prize to Yassar Arafat.

Normally, it wouldn't be a big deal to me who got it, or even got nominated. In this instance, however, I believe the man deserves to be out of jail, and if this will help, then I'm all for it.

You sure are an activist, cloudy. *admiredly nodding*

Oh, and you didn't have to give me the link to your essay, already read it. Sometime last month, I think. ;)

Great news and I do hope he gets it, but I too know it probably won't happen, there is always hope especially with so many supporters.

The lady at the women & childrens shelter that I send all my blankets to through the year is named Ila Red Owl. Sweet woman.

A guy that played a bit part in "Dancing With Wolves" had the last name "Young Man Afraid of His Horses." :D

Over the years the Nobel commitee has awarded a lot of prizes to a lot of deserving recipients...so you don't agree with one of their choices, that's no reason to dismiss the Nobel comitee outright...

And you neglect to mention that Yassar Arafat was one of three joint recipients that year. The other two were Shimon Peres, and Yitzhak Rabin. The award was given for their peace efforts in the Middle East.

Now, Ila Red Owl is a cool name. But....Myrtle Poor Bear....I just can't kill the smile to save my life.

What's the guy's real name? The horses guy, I mean.

The guy that played "Smiles A Lot" is Nathan Lee Chasing His Horse (he was such a cutie)

I went to school with a Donald Can Of Potatos...

It's much easier to fight for other countries' political prisoners than our own.

. :D .

Some of the old family names among the plains tribes are odd, to say the least.

Yep. And it's easier to feed other country's starving children than it is our own. Makes me angry.

Oh, but this country has no political prisoners, isn't this the Home of the brave, land of the free...

No siree, no political prisoners here at all...after all Guantanamo Bay is actually in Cuba...

And which of these was a known and active terrorist?

Hey, maybe Pol Pot should get one too. He stopped killing people, didn't he?

Kill a bunch of people, turn over a new leaf, and get the Nobel Prize.

That's because we can't really make the decisions for other countries....Err...except for Iraq, I mean, we threw their president down, didn't we?

I'm with you on that one 100%.

So, dismiss it as worthless because you don't agree with ONE recipient?

I don't mean to get snarky, but even if you disagree with Arafat receiving it, there is still merit to the award.
