By judicial decree, I am now legally a girl. I even have a court order to prove it.
I finally got around to changing my name. It was easier than I thought; the hardest part was filling out the complex paperwork. I used a little trick I read, and used the "other" section to request the gender on my birth certificate be changed as well. I turned it in to a clerk, payed a ridiculous fee, and they gave me a court date. They were nice enough to ask if I wanted a morning or afternoon time slot.
I show up, and walk inside the courtroom to check in like they told me. The room was dead silent, save the whir of the ventilation. A few people were scattered about the benches, whispering to themselves. I gave my name to the clerk, and sat down. A couple more people checked in, and the clerk left, leaving everyone in the hushed silence.
It felt like few times I've been dragged to church. The benches were long, solid oak with no padding, and everyone either stared straight ahead, or whispered to themselves.
A cop came in the room, and gave a brief lecture of what to do when you were called up, then left again. Fifteen minutes past my appointment, the clerk, cop, and stenographer came in, and announced the arrival of the judge. He talked objectively about the cases there today, then began. There were two other name changes ahead of me, so I had a chance to watch.
Finally I was called up. The judge asked if my reason for the name change was a gender change. I said yes, and he proceeded with the boring legal chant like he did for everyone else. He swore me and my witnesses in. The swearing in speech isn't quite like television, but I was surprised to hear they still include "so help you god".
He asked my witnesses how long they knew me, and seemed a bit surprised to hear 22 years from each of them. Of course, my parents have known me all my life. He said he could grant the gender change, but he would need a statement from the doctor. He again seemed surprised to learn I had a letter from my doctor with me.
More legal stuff, and he granted the change. I went to the DMV for a new license right after, which proved to be very uneventful. All I need to do now is tell all the major organizations in my life, like banks and schools.
But I'm finally a legal girl.
