Likewise, the Democratic Party has deployed these narratives in political campaigns, protest rallies, and social media messaging, arguing that the Right is on the verge of abolishing democracy and ushering in an authoritarian regime. None of these narratives is true, but each yields an emotional payout.

And don’t pretend that, when a mob is about to get hold of elected representatives and lynch them, you don’t think it’s entirely reasonable for security personnel to open fire.
