So, another curiousity question...

In lit, which categories are you least likely to read? (Are there some categories that you avoid even if they are written by a favorite author?)

tie: incest & non-consent. i won't go near 'em, unless it's part of the body of work by an author i do know and usually really like. and even then, it's not a sure thing for me.

Incest, Non-human, Mind Control...that kinda thing. I haven't read any of the non consent, but I wish there was a way to know if it's mellow reluctance or flat out rape.

Thats why I tend to stay away from that category. The whole domination or mellow reluctance is cool with me -- but violent rape is not.

well, one would think that dominance would be flagged for BDSM, no?

But that also ends up being too hardcore for me, usually. For me, I don't want any pain with my sex, thanks.

But a good writer should be able to take any catagory and write a good story, right?

If I like an author I'll read any catagory, I tend not to randomly wander though and instead take suggestions of authors from friends. I will read any catagory though, good writing is good writing reguardless of topic.

Then again since I've eternally mared my writing profile with dabling into catagories, I might be more likely to read what others have done with those same things.

Man I need a sexier Avatar

Non-Human
Celebrities
BDSM
Erotic Horror (unless we're talking female vampires or succubi)

While thats true, for erotic fiction, there are simply going to be things that do not interest you. For example, regardless of the writers skills, "scat play" is never going to turn me on.

Non Erotic.

At an erotica web site, that just seems silly. Otherwise I am okay with every category Lit offers.

Out of them all, Erotic Couplings, Incest/Taboo, and Loving Wives are my least favorite. I never read them unless someone posts a link in Story Feedback asking for advice, and usually, not even then.

I see several that have posted to this thread avoid Erotic Horror and Nonconsent/Reluctance. I have seen one or two rather intense stories in both categories, but I think most people are more afraid of what their imaginations conjure up than the actual material in those stories. The N/R stories have a bad tendency to end up with the victim enjoying it. This is probably great for the Wank Factor, but not very believable otherwise. Maybe I'm just jaded.

I avoid EC for perhaps the same reason many avoid EH; my imagination serves up the impression of a category containing countless stories of people engaged in every day vanilla sex and it's just not my thing.

A few I don't, and a few I generally avoid

Interracial, loving wives, non-erotic and poetry. I'm wary of BDSM, nonconsentual, sci/fi, erotic horror and non-human, but will read them if the teaser looks promising.

I think I've read at least one story within every category, but generally I don't read: non-erotic, BDSM, celebrities, non-consent, sci-fi/non human and mind control.

Your question raises two new ones in my mind:

Does it matter to you what anyone else dislikes (as opposed to people's declared preference)?

What on earth can you (or any of us) do with this information when you (we) have it?

To answer it - I don't come to an erotic stories site to read non-erotic stories.

snooper: while i understand the desire to seek the motivation behind a poll question, i'm not convinced that one exists beyond simle curiosity in this instance. :>

For those of you avoiding NonCon the non con on this site is notoriously weak. It usually means that the girl wanted it and didn't want to say it because women who initiate sex are whores. They almost always love it in the end. As for my personal avoided categories here they are and why.

1. Celebrities- These are usually poorly written by poor authors who think that dropping Jessica Simpson's name will get them readers.

2. Incest- These stories are usually poorly written by authors who know that the idea of mom/son, dad/daughter, bro/sis will bringing 5x the readers they could have otherwise gotten.

3. Erotic Horror- Myself aside I've only seen one author write actual Erotic Horror not Sci-Fi. I'm sorry folks having vampires does not make you horror any more than having The Count and a bunch of monsters makes Sesame Street horror. The defining factor in horror is that it is SCARY or atleast DISTURBING.

Now that is about it. Now I've personally tried to change some of these trends. I have two incest stories that at least kinda break the mold, and my celebrity series, 2 were based on Freddy Krueger and the other 10 were Power Rangers. No starlet name dropping for me. Also no readers for me. And a series of four just horrible Erotic Horror stories about girls getting disembowled and eaten and that sort fo thing. Not for the weak of heart.

snooper: No, its not to figure out the least popular categories and avoid writing stories in them...thats just plain silly. :p I really have little motivation beyond being curious.

(Speaking of which; I find it interesting that many people said incest was one of their least favorite catergories, yet its one of the categories with the most stories.)

bi: why is that surprising? what fraction of the total viewership do you suppose registered users of the forums represent? :>

ed

No interest in incest, erotic horror, gay male, or non human. Haven't read all categories but these are topics I wont read...

No interest whatsoever in Incest or Celebrities.

And I agree that the non-consensual on this site is very, very tame compared to other sites (especially story sites which allow depictions of a wide plethora of illegal activities.)

Erotic couplings, loving wives, romance, non-erotic, sci-fi... These are the categories I'm unlikely to ever investigate.

For the record

I also don't do gay stories and I'm unlikely to read non erotic. Remember though you don't get paid by the reader (or anything else) if you pick an unpopular category you're going to be more highly ranked. For me it is very nice to see my name breaking the top hundred. And I actually held a #1 spot, granted I didn't even hold it an entire day but it happened. Erotic Horror. Not a lot of competition this way remember there are two kinds of writers/directors/artists.

Be the best at what you do
Or be the only one doing what you do.

It doesn't matter what the fraction is. What matters is whether it is a representative sample.

The other reason may be found in the definition of "normal":
"Normal" is what I do and will admit.
"Abnormal" is what I do, but won't admit.
"Perverted" is what I want to do, but can't find anyone who will let me.

People may be interested in incest (the readership figures show that) but they may not be willing to admit it in an open forum.
