Julie set down the last down the last of the boxes in the hallway of the apartment and looked at Hope with a sense of relief.
“That’s it. That’s everything,” she proclaimed. “Not much to show for one marriage and twenty five years on this planet. Is it?”
Hope walked over to her, gathered her up in her arms and Julie had a little sob.
The last three months had been hell. Ever since she’d told Martin she’d wanted a divorce.
Martin had taken it badly. He’d made things difficult for her, changing the locks on the doors and freezing her bank accounts. Fortunately Hope had been there to guide her through what she needed to do and eventually Martin had relented.
To make matters worse however her parents had sided with Martin. In their eyes it was bad enough to be breaking up. But to be leaving him for a woman was beyond their comprehension.
Julie hadn’t been happy married to Martin, but it had taken Hope to show her just how unhappy she really had been. She could see now that he’d been controlling almost every aspect of her life. Friends, money, where she went, even down to what she wore when they went out.
Julie had gone along with it. In a way she liked having decisions made for her but this had gone too far. If it hadn’t been for Hope however she’d never have had the courage to do anything about it.
A part of Julie still couldn’t believe that Hope had been interested in her. They’d met in the bar at a company conference out of town. Julie had been part of the admin team, checking in guests and making sure they got their name badges, while Hope was a high flying company lawyer.
Hope had made a point of talking to her that evening at the bar. They’d spent the evening talking about their lives. Hope had been married too then.
When Hope had asked Julie back to her room for a nightcap, Julie had felt that she couldn’t refuse a request from a senior company executive. But that night Hope had taken her places that no man had ever done before.
They’d begun an affair straight after. There was sex but it wasn’t just about that. A lot of the time it was just about being together. Over time they realised it was love.
It was Hope who had first suggested living together. Julie didn’t think she had the guts to go through with it but Hope had been there to support her. Julie knew that there were plenty of people who thought the relationship wasn’t a good idea. At twenty five, she was younger than Hope and they didn’t mix in anything like the same social circles. But the heart wants what the heart wants and Julie knew she adored Hope.
When she’d stopped crying, Julie had a quick sniff then wiped her eyes. She put her arms around Hope’s perfect body, honed from countless hours at expensive gyms under the guidance of expensive personal trainers.
“We made it,” she told Hope and then the two of them kissed.
