A new plan from House lawmakers would automatically register men for a potential military draft when they hit age 18, avoiding potential legal consequences connected to failing to file the paperwork at the proper time.

Language included in the House Armed Services Committee’s draft of the annual defense authorization bill would mandate the automatic registration of all males ages 18 to 26 living in America in the Selective Service System, the federal database used for a military draft in case of a national emergency.

The system hasn’t been used for that purpose for 52 years, but men who fail to register can face a host of legal consequences, including forfeiture of eligibility for federal programs and possible jail time.

But the number of individuals who have skipped registering has increased in recent years, in large part because registration options were removed from the federal student loan process two years ago. That had accounted for nearly a quarter of all registrations in prior years.

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., sponsored the automatic registration language and called it both a money-saving and common-sense reform.

“By using available federal databases, the [Selective Service] agency will be able to register all of the individuals required and thus help ensure that any future military draft is fair and equitable,” she said during debate on the idea Wednesday night.

“This will also allow us to rededicate resources — basically that means money — towards reading readiness and towards mobilization … rather than towards education and advertising campaigns driven to register people.”

The Selective Service System costs roughly $30 million a year. Lawmakers have proposed a number of reforms to the database in recent years, including adding women and completely eliminating the agency altogether, but none have made it through Congress.

The latest proposal was approved unanimously by the committee but still must advance through the full House and Senate before it can become law. The authorization bill, which contains a myriad of military budget and policy priorities, is expected to be finalized by the two chambers sometime this fall.

For the record, most states automatically register all 18-26 year-old men when they first apply for a drivers license or non-driver ID. And, in others, you can't get a drivers license unless you do register.

Still, this is the kind of thing that understandably gets young people nervous. Doesn't necessarily mean that our ruling oligarchs plan on sending them off to die en masse in the Tenth Crusade or in Barbarosa 2.0. Just that, if they ever decide to do so, they're trying to streamline the process as much as possible.

This is BS! I registered "back in the day" and never even got a lottery ticket.

For three years, old enough to die for their country, but not old enough to legally drink a beer.

We need reserves.

Believe me, there are no 18 year-old women who have any illusion of Trump or Biden being any less eager to stuff them in the meat grinder, should his masters ever ask it of him.

They should be under that fact. Biden is considerably less likely than Trump just due to being less eager for a war. Trump wouldn't complain too much about young fit women being in the field with young men who need a place to blow off some steam.

The $30 million is a waste of money if everyone is too sick or unfit to fight.
In WWI, it became a serious issue for national defense when many of the men called to service in the industrialized world were too starved, too diseased, or too mangled to serve in combat. Universal healthcare was implemented (in Europe) because of that.

America still doesn't have universal healthcare, it has a military-industrial complex. Which isn't any good for fighting wars, just for terrorizing peasants on the other side of the planet, and it doesn't always accomplish even that.

Citation is seriously needed on this.

Read that years ago in a Clement Atlee biography, it's pretty common knowledge that poor health among the common soldiers in the First (and to a lesser extent Second) World War was a huge concern.

Article on Harry Truman, another WWI officer who experienced similar conditions with his own soldiers.

Other than the nitpick of WW2 being the primary driver it seems here more than WW1 thank you for the information. I'm for universal health care mind you. 100% on board just I hear lots of stories that seem questionable.

You don't really believe this, do you?

We are currently arming Ukraine against a nuclear powered adversary who is making deals with Kim Jong Un.

And who is hoping Trump will get back in office and follow through with his plans to withdraw the US from NATO.

He won't ever do that. RFK could tell him what his masters would do to him if he tried.

Trump says he's anti-war, but it's more likely that if he is allowed back in office, it'll be to convince red-staters to go back to joining the military.

If it doesn't work, they'll be forced to join.

We should have had Shitzinpants in power during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he would never have faced down the Russians like that Liberal Commie Kennedy.

Oh, wait..

Funny how we can manage to do this, but not automatically register people to vote.
It’s almost as if we are fine with people dying, and hate when they speak up.

100%. Yes we are arming Ukraine against a nuclear powered advesary who is making deals with Kim Jong Un. Kim can at least kind of afford a war. Russia cannot for a lot of reasons, and letting Russia go unchallenged isn't a real option anyway. Even if you think that will lead to a war then you're argument is WW3 is going to happen no matter what. Which means you need to base all your planning around is the US and NATO in a better position now than we will be in five years. I use five years because that seems to be the agreed upon window for China to jump in formally with Taiwan. Might as well assume China is gonna jump in while the jumping is good. Should probably assume Iran will side against us while we're at it.

So are we just from military readiness better off if the war kicks off in the morning or next year or in 2030?

I think the world is far to economically interdependent to do a war on that scale. This isn't a war anybody can really win. No land will be gained long term save maybe in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The amount of lost revenue on every level is gonna hurt. Love them or hate them the powerful .1% who rule the fucking world aren't about to give up being able to travel the world for lulz while us pissants worry about Kiev.
