Laurel--Turtle update?

Oooh, Sonora! Don't get me started! They're doing great... I still don't have names for them, though I call the little boy Scooter (the height of originality, I know...) because he scoots from one end of the pen to the other sooo fast... The girl is really skitterish. I was going to name them Lasher & Latina, but he's too spastic to be Lasher and she's not NEARLY pretty enough to be Latina (she's a knockout, in case anyone was wondering)... though she's a hottie in a tortoise way. 
When I give them their morning soak, I make sure to handle them a little so they get used to me, and it seems to be working. They don't pull their heads in every time I pick them up anymore - in fact, sometimes they'll stick their necks waaay out and stare at me with their lil black eyes...they're soo funny! Dandelion flowers are their favorite food, with dandelion greens being a close second - they'll eat both right out of my hand. I hand-fed them hibiscus leaves and they dug those as well.
Oh, here's a funny story that's sort of relevant to the site... I found a video at Amazon.com on (of all things) the care & husbandry of Egyptian Tortoises! So I ordered it, being the good lil mom I am. It's super-low budget, like shot on my video camera, but full of interesting info and very sad footage of tortoises packed into cages and sold illegally in open-air markets in Cairo.
Anyhow, so I've heard that these torts are very vocal but I had no idea what a tortoise would sound like if he/she decided to talk. In this video, they show two male torts trying to mate with a larger female. They ram her with their shells to get her to stay in one place, then fight between themselves over who gets that sexy babe. The winner mounts her doggie...er, tortie-style, opens his mouth and, whie doing her, makes the loudest, strangest warbling bird-like sound! It was sooo funny to see him going at her & cooing! Manu and I may try to find a way to digitze the sound so you can hear it - it'll blow your mind!

LMAO! It'll be awhile till that happens... They're not even a year old yet, and they won't reach sexual maturity till they're 10 years old or so... The funniest part is that the first time I ever saw wild animals doing the nasty was at the San Diego Zoo, when I was 8 or 9, in the Galapagos tortoise pen. Then when I was on vacation with my parents iat Ocotillo Wells a few years later, a pair of mating desert tortoises in the middle of the road nearly did us in when Dad swerved off the road to avoid hitting them. Thus, tortoises fucking seems to be a recurring theme in my life. Odd, but true.

Thanks for the explanation i was just slightly confuddled.
Laurel, they sound so cute! The joy they bring you is evident in your posts about them. You make them sound like so much fun, but you need to keep reiminding us (me!) about all the work they require or else I may have to go out and get me a couple. (I know that I could never have them because of the weather here and my oh-so-spoiled cat.)

Oh yes! They do take a bit of work, and would take more for someone who didn't live where I live. Southern California's climate and vegetation is so similar to their native environment that I haven't had to invest in all the lights/gadgets/etc that tortoise mommies in colder climes have to buy.
I made an interesting discovery today... they're so small yet, & it's hard to tell which is a boy & which is a girl because their tails aren't that different, so I've been relying on the fact that one has a slight projection at the back of his shell to tell me he's the guy. Well, today's "inspection" revealed that they've grown a little, and the one I thought was a chick has a tail that's now longer than the others! SO I guess I'll have to wait a while longer to actually assign names - don't want to tramautize the little kids...lol...
