This sucks ... I'm not actually "allergic" to latex yet, but I am sensitive to it, and as a nurse, I'm likely to develop a full allergy (anaphylaxis and all).

It has become a problem with covering our toys for play - the only condoms that come non-lubricated are latex, and a lot of the lubricants used (especially with the spermacide) are not safe for use with toys. So ... what do I do? I wear non-latex gloves so that my hands are not touching the latex condom ... but that may/may not actually protect me because ... well ... I touch the toys with more than just my hands - sometimes actually on accident :p So what do other people with latex sensitivities/allergies do? Any hints or suggestions?

Miss Karen

So latex is a no no, and you want to avoid lubes for toy protection. The toys in question are made of what?

Miss Karen

My sympathies go out to you.

I don't have any ideas, and my friend has the same problem. We didn't know her latex allergy was so bad until one night my fingernail penetrated thru the end of my glove while doing a procedure and sent latex particles up in the air and it resulted in her suffering a full blown anaphylactic allergy.

I know she's switched to glass Pyrex play toys however. They can be put in the dishwasher and sanitized for her protection. lol

She's not found any condoms that were not latex though.

I recently found polyurethane condoms through the condom wizard search for hypoallergenic alternatives on Condomania (http://www.condomania.com/). They are thinner than latex, and unlike the lamb/sheep alternative are said to provide protection against disease including HIV...and they come without the addition of spermicides. Maybe worth a try.

I'm a fan of the polyurethane condoms for those sensitive to latex...
even if they are lubed it's probably water based, not silicone based lube. You can test this on the base of your silicone toys, if it gets sticky fast, you know there's an incompatibility.

Trojan Supras are made of polyurethane. Are they lubed?

Yup, they are - that's what we use for the human toys ;)

We have switched to the polyurethane condomes for actual intercourse ... but for toy use, because of the lube, I'm afraid to try them.

As for AA's question - so far was have a variety of materials that our toys are made of, and I know that some of them are ok to use with the lube that comes with the condoms, but some aren't ... so we have to be careful and I'm hoping to find out what to do with the ones that aren't ok to use with the lubes.

And using pyrex glass toys ... most of them are expensive, and don't really appeal to us. We're working on getting some that are silicone, and we have one jelly-type one, and a few other random ones - and I have a particular acrylic one picked out if I can ever convince Holly to let me have it. So .. we have the whole array except for latex, either already, or planning to get ...

Out of curiosity, how available are the non-latex condoms in stores? Maybe ordering would be better?

The lambskin and polyurethane are available - you just have to look closely (basically, look for the small boxes that are still really expensive). I could order them online, but we don't go through that many (not with one boy on the road most of the time, and the other not living here yet) so running to the store isn't a problem. The problem is to find ones that are not lubricated/spermacided (is that a word?).

I was talking to my latex-allergic friend today about this. She was telling me that finding them was a the biggest problem for her. In a little porn shop we visit, she used to be able to find them in there, but they stopped carrying them. Grocery stores don't carry them either, hence the question.

My good wishes go to you. I hope you find what you're looking for.

I needed to find alternative condoms so I bought all the sampler packs from sites such as Good Vibrations and Babes in Toyland. Then I went through one by one and found the best options. By trail and error I found my preference.

As was mentioned, Durex Avanti is a reasonable option and Good Vibrations charges $2/each but with a discount of 20% when you buy 30+. I am not shilling, just trying to give clear way to make purchase if Wal-Mart/Supermarket is not an option for you.

Condomania have them for $11.95 a box of 12 or if you want to buy 5 boxes it comes down to $53.78 and for 12 works out to $10.16 a dozen.:p

why not use unlubricated and buy a water based lube? safe for the condom safe for the toys and probably easier then all the other worry and hassle.

That is exactly my problem .... the only non-lubricated condoms are latex, and I'm latex-sensitive.

At walmart, they are right next to each other (at least, at the 2 here) ... and no good - the latex ones are there, but no non-latex

so ... websites??? :p

I'm about to decide that this is a lost cause - because I know that the female condoms will be even more expensive, and who knows if they will work or not ...

So have you tried the Durex Avanti from Condomania?...they are inexpensive, poly and sold unlubricated only.
