Sometimes you just have to ask yourself is this worth the $40/lb that it cost me.

cost? hell all it cost me was a bullet and some time, tomatoes, lettuce, onions and peppers. about maybe $5 total.

I took the afternoon off, so I am cooking a simple dish tonight.

Home-smoked salmon steaks, with a tomato, onion and red pepper salsa, served on coconut rice.
For dessert, we have marsala-soaked melon.

Tomorrow's breakfast will be home dam caught rainbow trout.

I like your dish - reasonably presented, although the venison is a little over-cooked for my taste.

i usually like a little blood in it, but there was plenty to have left overs tomorrow, so i needed to cook it a little longer.

It's meals like that which have me planning on hunting this fall. Looks great.

Oh, I like venison, but I've only ever had it in restaurants. Once I had slivers of raw frozen reindeer though, that a friend's father had brought back from the arctic.

I only ate apples today, didn't really have dinner :(

I would have taken it out, carved off a bit (and set it to rest) and then put the rest back in to finish.
But I am a really fussy fucker when it comes to meat

We have apples growing. I am so sick of apples!
I've been giving them away - far too many for us to eat, and I've already preserved 70 jars!

Game (venison, bison, ram, wild boar) is superfood, nutritionally and taste-wise. Lucky human!

I'll buy that. Your "simple" sounds a lot more complicated than mine though! My simple is....tacos. Or something.

I want coconut rice now....

The best thing about this meal, is once I've made the salsa, the rest basically cooks without me having to do much.

I made taco mince this morning and froze it.

i remember trying venison once as a kid. my dad told me it was bambi's mom. he ended up eating it all himself.

Those kinds of meals are nice. I don't even mind stuff that has "active" prep involved....what I can't stand is making stuff like "real" risotto (which I love) that you have to stand there and stir for 45 minutes.

I'd like your recipe for coconut rice, please.

Also, trout for bfast?

I'm a huge risotto fan, and botched it recently due to poor stirring. Few things are worse than soggy, botched risoto.
