(Closed for Marauder and I)
Sophia tapped her fingers upon the steering wheel as she crept slowly along in the thick fog. She knew exactly why the described things to be as thick as pea soup just from how dense this white fog was. It became worse the higher she went up in elevation along the mountainous road.
She had decided that since graduation she was taking the summer off and traveling around, she had no plan, no map, but she had a desire to be free for a change before bogged down with classes in college.
She was nineteen, an only child, great G.P.A., and single. Sophia was named after the gorgeous vintage starlet Sophia Lauren. Her mother idolized the queen of film. Sophia was skinny growing up; she got called the same names as her protégée, slim, the stick, toothpick and whatever else they could think of.
Her headlights of her old white Saab 900 followed along the railing that from what she could see was a far drop down if you went over the edge. The fog lifted slightly when she got to the top of the mountain, the rain started to fall on her way down. The sound of the windshield wipers began to hypnotize her as she crept downwards doing about the speed of thirty and entered the fog again.
Just as she hit the bottom the car began to spit and sputter, she looked down, she wasn’t out of gas of even close, this was just not what Sophia needed being in the middle of no-wheres-ville.
Rounding the corner she pulled over to the side, Sophia was far from being mechanically inclined, she didn’t know anything about cars, she was lucky she could change her own tire. The car continued to make the god awful sounds as she veered it to the side of the road, she was in a dangerous area and she couldn’t recall passing another vehicle for miles.
Sophia reached down aside her seat and grabbed her umbrella; unsheathing it she opened the door and quickly opened it. The wind came and forced it in the other direction as she quickly scrambled back in her care and closed the door and fiddled with it trying to get it back the way it should be.
This was just her morning, she tried once more and stepped from the car, the wind lifted her dress as she tried to push it back down, she could feel the rain pounding upon her, her knee length conservative light yellow dress was beginning to cling to her body , her hair was already soak as where her matching yellow pumps.
Sophia got back in the car and placed it in neutral and left it coast down around the corner where the fog wasn’t as thick nor was the rain oddly not falling as hard. She stepped from the car again and held her coat over her head, grabbing her purse she locked the car up and began to walk along the road.
Behind her came headlights, she turned and felt like a deer caught in the headlights as she watched it slow up and then come to a complete stops aside her dead in the road. The window rolled down as she looked to the man behind the wheel. He was older, wore a wedding ring, and he was the only thing that she had seen for miles.
“Need a help and a lift little lady?” he asked her.
“Y-yes please, I need help with my car, it...It died, literally died.”
“Town is just ahead a few miles, I’ll take you to Doc John’s, and he’s the only mechanic we have here in these parts. You’re way out in the hills, ain’t much for miles.”
He popped open the door for her as Sophia got in, she clutched her purse in her hands and sat as close to the door as possible as he drove along. There wasn’t much for conversation, the fog lifted, the rain still didn’t stop but it slowed down to a drizzle as she looked out the window.
He pulled into an old Route 66 gas station; everything was far from modern times.
He stopped the car and got out, and waited as he led her into the gas station, she immediately smelled oil, and watched as a tall decent looking man came in from the garage, “Hey there Paul, what can I do for ya?”
“Not I, this little lady here broke down on Dead Man’s curve, needs a tow. I’m going to take her into town to get a bite to eat and see if Ellie can set her up for a night. I figure you can stop by there or call and let her know what’s wrong with it.”
He nodded as they left and then they headed into town where she met Ellie, got food and a place to sleep at the old Inn for the night.
“Ms. Ellie, mind if I returned for the night, my bags are in the car but I can still really use the sleep?” Just as she asked Doc pulled in and shook his head and gave Sophia the bad news.
“Ma’am you’re looking at about $500.00 and three to four weeks to get it here….I suggest you call family or plan on sticking around till then, your choice.” That’s all he said and then took a seat at counter for coffee.
“I-I can’t call family”…was all she said as she turned and sat back at her table, sleep was no longer on her mind as she tore the napkin in her hand into little pieces as she sat there looking out the window.
