(Closed for Marauder and I)

Sophia tapped her fingers upon the steering wheel as she crept slowly along in the thick fog. She knew exactly why the described things to be as thick as pea soup just from how dense this white fog was. It became worse the higher she went up in elevation along the mountainous road.

She had decided that since graduation she was taking the summer off and traveling around, she had no plan, no map, but she had a desire to be free for a change before bogged down with classes in college.

She was nineteen, an only child, great G.P.A., and single. Sophia was named after the gorgeous vintage starlet Sophia Lauren. Her mother idolized the queen of film. Sophia was skinny growing up; she got called the same names as her protégée, slim, the stick, toothpick and whatever else they could think of.

Her headlights of her old white Saab 900 followed along the railing that from what she could see was a far drop down if you went over the edge. The fog lifted slightly when she got to the top of the mountain, the rain started to fall on her way down. The sound of the windshield wipers began to hypnotize her as she crept downwards doing about the speed of thirty and entered the fog again.

Just as she hit the bottom the car began to spit and sputter, she looked down, she wasn’t out of gas of even close, this was just not what Sophia needed being in the middle of no-wheres-ville.

Rounding the corner she pulled over to the side, Sophia was far from being mechanically inclined, she didn’t know anything about cars, she was lucky she could change her own tire. The car continued to make the god awful sounds as she veered it to the side of the road, she was in a dangerous area and she couldn’t recall passing another vehicle for miles.

Sophia reached down aside her seat and grabbed her umbrella; unsheathing it she opened the door and quickly opened it. The wind came and forced it in the other direction as she quickly scrambled back in her care and closed the door and fiddled with it trying to get it back the way it should be.

This was just her morning, she tried once more and stepped from the car, the wind lifted her dress as she tried to push it back down, she could feel the rain pounding upon her, her knee length conservative light yellow dress was beginning to cling to her body , her hair was already soak as where her matching yellow pumps.

Sophia got back in the car and placed it in neutral and left it coast down around the corner where the fog wasn’t as thick nor was the rain oddly not falling as hard. She stepped from the car again and held her coat over her head, grabbing her purse she locked the car up and began to walk along the road.

Behind her came headlights, she turned and felt like a deer caught in the headlights as she watched it slow up and then come to a complete stops aside her dead in the road. The window rolled down as she looked to the man behind the wheel. He was older, wore a wedding ring, and he was the only thing that she had seen for miles.

“Need a help and a lift little lady?” he asked her.

“Y-yes please, I need help with my car, it...It died, literally died.”

“Town is just ahead a few miles, I’ll take you to Doc John’s, and he’s the only mechanic we have here in these parts. You’re way out in the hills, ain’t much for miles.”

He popped open the door for her as Sophia got in, she clutched her purse in her hands and sat as close to the door as possible as he drove along. There wasn’t much for conversation, the fog lifted, the rain still didn’t stop but it slowed down to a drizzle as she looked out the window.

He pulled into an old Route 66 gas station; everything was far from modern times.

He stopped the car and got out, and waited as he led her into the gas station, she immediately smelled oil, and watched as a tall decent looking man came in from the garage, “Hey there Paul, what can I do for ya?”

“Not I, this little lady here broke down on Dead Man’s curve, needs a tow. I’m going to take her into town to get a bite to eat and see if Ellie can set her up for a night. I figure you can stop by there or call and let her know what’s wrong with it.”

He nodded as they left and then they headed into town where she met Ellie, got food and a place to sleep at the old Inn for the night.

“Ms. Ellie, mind if I returned for the night, my bags are in the car but I can still really use the sleep?” Just as she asked Doc pulled in and shook his head and gave Sophia the bad news.

“Ma’am you’re looking at about $500.00 and three to four weeks to get it here….I suggest you call family or plan on sticking around till then, your choice.” That’s all he said and then took a seat at counter for coffee.

“I-I can’t call family”…was all she said as she turned and sat back at her table, sleep was no longer on her mind as she tore the napkin in her hand into little pieces as she sat there looking out the window.

Dr. Sebastian Rhys-Hamilton was driving at the start of what he felt was going to be a productive day. He was planning on taking a leisurely drive to Kellersville, going via the back roads, just to enjoy the drive. He had a meeting with the sales manager of the Kellers' Times newspaper, which would hopefully result in an advertisement being placed in the paper for the next three weeks.

He was still disappointed that the means he first used, the internet, had failed to illicit any serious interest. It all came down to the location. People didn't want to come to the quaint little village of Dead Man's Crossing.

Sebastian was born and raised in England, where where such colourful names were common. That, in part, was some of the appeal for choosing to live there when me came to live in the United States to pursue his research. The other main reason was his home, office and laboratory.

Widow's Peak Estate.

The mansion, there was no other way of describing it, sat on enormous, well maintained grounds. It had 7 bedrooms, 4 of them with ensuites; 3 spacious bathrooms; numerous rooms usable for many general tasks; 2 libraries; formal and informal dining rooms; well stocked kitchen; entertaining rooms; and the list went on. It was in a good condition and it was on sale for a generously low price. He then ensured that it had everything he would need.

A comprehensive wireless network that hooked into a substantial internet pipe. Two rooms had been converted into a first class drug laboratory. One of the libraries was filled with journals, papers, and texts that related to his field of research. One office for himself, one for his admin assistant. If he ever managed to recruit one.

He saw he was nearing the village and he was feeling a little hungry. He had given Allison the day off, as he wasn't going to be around enough during the day to warrant his cook being on duty. The thought of one of Miss Ellie's Counter Breakfasts almost had his mouth watering.

The silver Rolls Royce rolled to a stop outside the town's inn. He got out of the right side of the vehicle as it was an unconverted import. He locked the car, not out of any need, but more out of habit. He paused to readjust his jacket and tie before he entered the main part of the establishment.

His suit was a 19th century design and cut, though with more modern fabrics. It was navy blue, as well as the tie, and a white shirt underneath. His hard soled dress shoes clicked on the floor board as he made his way to the counter.

"Good morning, Miss Ellie." Sebastian's accent was pure upper class English, still as strong today as it was the day he set foot on US soil. "I was wondering if I could get something to eat, as well as one of your fine coffees, please."

"Of course, Doctor Sebastian. What brings you to town at this time of morning?"

"I'm was on my way to Kellersville to get an advertisement in their paper for an administrative assistant. You you mind if I put up a poster in here? I'm hoping that I might have better luck recruiting locally."

"Sure, Doctor Sebastian. When you've got one, drop it off and we'll put it up on the notice board there." She nodded in the direction of the mostly empty cork board. "Why don't you take a seat and I'll bring you your food when it's ready."

"Ah, a delight to the very last. Thank you, Miss Ellie." Sebastian turned to walk to one of the tables. It was then he noticed the rather bedraggled looking young woman in a conservative yellow outfit sitting alone and looking rather desolate. She was rather young, maybe in her early 20's. He thought briefly of talking to the young woman, but decided to leave her to her musing, and not risk giving her the wrong idea.

However, he did take a seat that allowed him to easily watch her while he ate and drank. Studying people was almost a profession obsession for one such as himself.

Sophia starred out into the fog, she had no idea what she was to do next, the sign at the entrance was easily seen through the thinner fog, ‘Dead man’s Corner population 75’. She was beginning to wonder if that included those that passed away as well. The small town was really nothing to it, from what she could see, though she thought she could be wrong and she’ll know when the fog lifts and the afternoon comes.

The sun was trying to shine though the grey clouds above, the rain still feel on what seemed to be one of those sleepy little towns you read about, it had almost a spooky feeling to it, but she was sure that was just due to the name as now knew it and the current weather.

Sophia watched as the water from the puddles splashed from under the silver rolls as it pulled in and parked before the small diner. It was far from what she had expected to see pull up and park with the others that were far more beat up and damaged with rust and falling apart.

The mist continued to fall, slowing up as she watched the gentleman open the door and get out, her brow raised as she looked him over. He stopped before the door and fixed his coat and tie. His attire was again quite different from those around she had seen so far. To Sophia it was as if she and he walked out from another era, her in her vintage dress and him in this English attire and everyone else in jeans and flannel shirts of t-shirts.

She caught herself starring at him as he entered; her blue eyes dropped as she checked out the suit, his shoes caught her attention when they sounded with each step as she looked him over slowly, and finally she looked the other way knowing it was rude to stare.

As she looked out the window she could hear him speak, his English accent was heavy and to her that tied everything together for her, the car, suit, the way he walked with poise, straight and not slumped over, he had a presence about him. Another walked in behind him as Sophia caught the scent of the English man as the breeze blew in her direction; she savored it like one would a fine wine.

Ellie brought her plate and refilled her juice, swapping the old glass for a new one as she placed it down before Sophia and then turned and just as she was about to walk from the table fully she turned back around as if she was going to speak. Sophia watched as Ellie curled her fingers around the metal part of the chair across from her and pulled it back and sat down.

“Look I know you have a problem and I have a feeling you’re going to be stuck in town for a while, it’s not my business to mettle but that English gentleman is looking for a helper of some kind. I know you need a job and he’s been pretty kind to folks since he moved here, maybe you need to speak to him about work? I can suggest it to him if you like and maybe just maybe your luck could change.”

Sophia looked out from the corner of her eye quickly over to the table he was sitting at as she quickly turned her eyes back to Ellie and spoke in a whispering soft voice, “I would really appreciate it Ma’am, anything right now would work, and I’d even clean your dishes and sweep your floor if I had to. I’m not afraid of hard work.”

Ellie laughed as she reached forth and placed her hand upon Sophia’s and patted it. “Girl if I could use you I would, you seem sweet and innocent. I’ll talk to the good doctor and maybe like I said things will change for the better for you.”

“Thank you Ma’am I’d really appreciate it.” Sophia replied as she watched Ellie stand up, push the chair in and go about her business.

Sophia could feel eyes upon her but she dared turn and look, instead she watched out the window and slowly ate her breakfast and sipped at her juice. Her dress began to dry as the heat from above forced hot air down upon her from the top; she knew that there was a less likely chance she would get sick sitting there verses another area of the diner.

Ellie walked by, coffee pot in hand as she went over and filled the doctor’s mug, Sophia couldn’t help but look once more out of the corner of her eye as she watched Ellie nod her head in Sophia’s direction.

A squeeze to her shoulder started her making her cough as she was about to swallow a gulp of her juice. Ellie stood there and spoke softly, “I left him know of your predicament maybe he will come to you, or you go to him.”

“Thank you Ellie but, I’d not know what to say….”

Ellie winked and patted her shoulder, “he’s a gentleman he will approach you if interested. Now finish breakfast you look god awful thin.” With that said she walked away and back into the kitchen.

Sebastian watched as Ellie wandered over and talked the young woman in yellow. As was natural with human behaviour, he wondered what the subject of conversation was. It had to be something Ellie thought was important, because that was the only time she sat down. Even when she wanted to just have a chat to pass some time, she remained standing, even when Sebastian offered her a seat. It soon became apparent to him that he was a feature of the conversation by the way the young woman glanced over at him, then looked back at Ellie. It was too quick to be a look of casual curiosity. It piqued his curiosity, but little else.

Ellie returned to counter, grabbing the coffee jug. She wandered over to where Sebastian sat, and filled his mug with coffee.

"Pardon me, Doctor Sebastian, I'm sorry if I am sticking my nose in where it may not belong, but the young lady over there in the yellow," Ellie nodded over in Sophia's direction, "is in need of some work for the next month at least. I thought she'd be interested, so I checked. She is interested."

"Miss Ellie, I just might speak to the young lady in question, and see if she is indeed interested in the work I have. Actually, I think I shall do just that. Could you please bring my breakfast to me when I am at her table?" Ellie just smiled and nodded. He saw he pause beside the young woman, filling her in on her way back to the counter.

Sebastian sat, drinking his coffee for a few minutes. It would be rather impolite to just rush over to start speaking to the young woman. He'd rather that they both had the time to ready themselves.

Sebastian stood slowly, and made his way over to the table where the young woman sat staring out the window. "Excuse me, Miss, may I join you?" She started a little, and looked up to him. Her blue eyes were a little wide initially, but she calmed herself quickly.

"Yes, please." Her voice was quiet and very gentle on his ears. He noticed that the style of her dress was one of a more vintage era, and it flattered her nicely. He sat down, getting himself seated properly and comfortably before he launched into anything.

"Good morning, Miss. My name is Sebastian Rhys-Hamiton. I believe Miss Ellie has spoken to you about a job vacancy I have." She nodded hesitantly. "Well, I have a need for an administrative assistant. I have a vast amount of paperwork and other related tasks and duties that are eating into my valuable research time. So having someone to free up that time is becoming essential.

"Now the duties are simple. Filing, typing up of notes, answering and making phone calls, sending and receiving faxes & emails, keeping tabs on related scientific materials and getting those that are relevant to my research, and occasionally assisting with work in the lab.

"Now, in return for this, I am offering a wage of $250 a week, which I know is not much, but in addition I am also including food and lodgings in the package. I work from home, and it's a fair distance from town. I have plenty of rooms for you to choose from.

"Now, can you tell me a little about yourself? What brought you to our fair village? What education and work experience you have? Any hobbies that may be appropriate to the position? Why would you like the job? And why I should employ you?

"Anyway, I have covered the majority of the tasks involved, and details of the offer, if you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Also, there is no need for an immediate answer, but the sooner you can respond, the better it would be."

Ellie wandered over with Sebastian's breakfast. "Thank you, Miss Ellie." Sebastian started to eat while the young woman thought through his offer.

"Excuse me, Miss, may I join you?"

The sound of his voice when she was least expecting it, never having seen him walk over from his table started Sophia. Her eyes grew wide and then calmed quickly as she regained her composure. Her hand moved to her upper chest as she felt her heart beat against it. “Yes, please do Sir.” She replied, as he would be quick to figure out she was a soft spoken girl.

Sophia moved her eyes along him, a closer look from just across the diner or from the corner of her eye. He was one to definitely stand out in a crowd; his accent drew her in immediately, just as his attire. Sophia crossed her legs under the table feeling the wetness within the inside of her two inch heeled pumps and then she picked the napkin from her lap and dabbed her full lips then returned it to her lap once again.

His eyes moved over her making her feel embarrassed as she was drenched like a drowned rat not but two hours before and she knew that she must have looked a fright. Her cheeks took on the color of crushed pink rose petals, her lips were a natural matching light pink as the light lipstick she was once wearing was wiped away, not that it would have been noticeable she wore no heavy make up just enough to darken her eyes adding a smokey look like a vintage starlet with long thick curled lashes.

"Good morning, Miss. My name is Sebastian Rhys-Hamilton….” He said as her eyes lifted to his listening to him speak about the job position he was looking to have filled. He nodded her head as he went along so he knew she was paying attention. When he was finally done Sophia spoke up and introduced herself.

“Greetings Mr. Rhys-Hamilton, I’m Sophia Dumas.” She was able to get in quickly before he continued to speak on.

"Now the duties are simple. Filing, typing up of notes, answering and making phone calls, sending and receiving faxes & emails, keeping tabs on related scientific materials and getting those that are relevant to my research, and occasionally assisting with work in the lab.”

“I have done office work in the recent past Sir, I know how to properly file, taking notes in shorthand and I can type well with little to no mistakes majority of the time, occasionally one does slip through. Answering calls and making them were also part of my job, same with faxing and emailing. I am computer literate.” Sophia answered. I can most likely help you with research; it just might not be as intense as you like depending upon the subject manner.”

Before she continued she curled her fingers around the glass and placed it to her lips after taking a sip of the juice.

“To be quite honest Sir, at this moment I do have a free summer where I was just going to travel before I entered college. My car broke down upon the curve and I was brought into town where I was told it would take a few weeks to get the part here and then to get it apart and together, plus payment would be quite a sum, so this would be a god sent if we can come to an agreement about employment.”

Sophia sucked in a breath and slowly released it. “I don’t wish to seem pushy, just in need of help.”

Her eyes dropped as she said the last part, she was stuck and desperate, what else was she to say other than the truth.

Ellie came over and placed his plate down tossing Sophia a playful wink, which made her smile.

“I am prompt, I’ve never missed a day of work, I’m reliable, and I am capable of cooking, cleaning and tiding up. I can learn things quickly as well, usually only need shown once.” She said softly as her eyes met his.

Sebastian listened carefully as Sophia responded to each of his points and questions. Her answers were delivered clearly, concisely and without too much pause. She was confident in her skills, but her circumstances were a point of concern to her, and to him.

"So, you are effectively trapped here for a while, and need to make ends meet. I will be honest with you and say such a circumstance could be counter productive for any work you do. I would have preferred that you were more willing to undertake this role, but like yourself, I am in a strong need of help. But the all important facts are that you seem to be more than capable of doing the work, and you are available to fill the role.

"Before I make a decision, though, I do have some further questions for you. What studies have you enrolled for, and why that particular course? At this point in time, when the repairs are affected on your car, would you be resigning and continuing with your original plans? Finally, do you have any concerns about essentially living in the same abode as myself?"

Sebastian started eating his breakfast while the young woman thought on what he had said. She had spoken truthfully, even declaring her reasons for the need for work. Even if she stayed for the duration of how long it took to repair her car, he would still gain much. And in that time, he would hopefully secure a more long term employee.

Unless Sophia said something drastic, he had decided that he would take her on in the role if she wanted it. He couldn't refuse her due to her circumstances, given her professed abilities. His upbringing was very strong in that regard. Besides, it would be the classic win-win situation. And one final, some what mercenary note, he would be safe in guessing that she would put in more effort than she normally would due to her desperation. Even he had a healthy dose of self-interest, just like everyone else.

"So, you are effectively trapped here for a while, and need to make ends meet…” He said and continued on as she listened being attentive to his words, making sure she understood what he was offering and answering back correctly.

“Sir, my current situation is indeed a negative one for me, but I see it as perhaps this is what was to be. I try not thinking negatively about things, I always try looking for the silver lining.” Sophia said with a semi-smile. “I can do everything you said, just would need to show me how things are done, your way not everyone files the same…If you offer me the job that is, I don’t wish to presume.”

Sophia took another sip of her juice and dabbed her lips once more before she spoke, “Psychology as a major and art as a minor Sir. I love the human mind, I enjoy people watching, and I wish to know what makes certain people think certain ways and others different.

“Art as a minor, because I enjoy painting and sketching also museums I adore just to walk through them and admire every piece and study the brush strokes and see what I see compared to what it should be. Then there is the theater and much more. I enjoy creativity and how it’s expressed in every aspect.” Sophia answered.

Sophia sighed softly while thinking about the second part licking her lips before she answered, “I’d like to say I’d be staying but that would really depend upon how you and I get along, my work if satisfactory and I feel complete working for you. If all that works Sir, then I shall complete the summer. I really had no plans.”

The last part was a bit tough as she had never lived with anyone but family, “I have never lived outside my own family home, so I really can’t answer that at this time, it’s more trial and error at this point Sir.”

They watched as Ellie came by again and she set a fresh glass of juice before Sophia and a fresh mug of coffee for Sebastian. “I can start right away, would just need to get my bags.” She wasn’t pushing the job she was just letting him know she had all good intentions and was interested to work for him, not just because she needed the help.

Sebastian watched her as she responded to his next batch of questions. He was once more pleased to hear her responses conveying the truth, regardless of how it might have sounded.

“Psychology as a major and art as a minor Sir. I love the human mind, I enjoy people watching, and I wish to know what makes certain people think certain ways and others different."

This revelation brought a smile to his face. He took the moment to clear away the small amounts of food debris caught in the corners of his mouth.

"Well, Sophia, let me reintroduce myself. I am Doctor Sebastian Rhys-Hamilton, M.D. And I am a psychiatrist. I am doing some research into some psychiatric disorders. So, I believe that you will be well suited to fill this role."

He quietly listened to her responses, and as he thought, there was nothing that changed his opinion of her with respect to the role.

"Well, Miss Dumas, I am very pleased to offer you the role of Administrative Assistant, as detail above, for a minimum duration of four weeks, with the option to extend.

"And since you are available for an immediate start, once we have finished dining here, I shall take you to your new residence and place of work. Of course, after you have fetched whatever belongings you require."

Sebastian returned to his breakfast, pleased with the outcome of the day's lucky break. He again took a closer look at Sophia. She had an elegance to her that he found pleasing. It would be good to have a nice young lady who was pleasant to look at as a member of staff. His first priority was someone functional, then someone social and finally, physically interesting.

From her conversational style, Sophia was going to be a good fit socially. Sebastian liked the idea of being able to hold a conversation with his assistant, whether it was during 'work' hours or not. Very few people can exist in isolation, and therefore require some social interaction. Sebastian fell into the majority category.

Finally, Sophia was someone that dressed well, and was well presented. She was healthy and she was comfortable with herself as a physical person. Added to that, she had a natural beauty that was not overwhelming. If his guess of her style of dress was anything to go by, she would dress in a manner that would be complimentary for her body shape. So, she would make a very nice individual to watch from a pure aesthetic point of view. He was male as well.

The human being was programmed on many different levels to assess the qualities of those of the opposite sex as a good mate. It had been harnessed into finding a good sexual partner, but the underlying requirement was still there.

He often amused himself with these observations based off his own reactions to things. It helped ground him that he was no different to the majority of other people in the world. His training made him aware of the workings of the human brain and it's impact on the mind, thought and perception. He was his one lab rat in that respect.

But he pulled himself out of that train of thought, and focused on his food. In a few minutes, he had finished his breakfast.

"Miss Ellie," he called out across the room, "another fine meal. You don't mind if I pay you later? I have a new assistant to get to work."

"You're fine, Doctor Sebastian. When you're not so busy, you can fix your account then."

"As always, Miss Ellie, you are most generous." Sebastian stood, and went to assist Sophia stand by moving her chair for her. "Shall we go and get your belongings, and get you settled into your new job?"

"Well, Sophia, let me reintroduce myself. I am Doctor Sebastian Rhys-Hamilton, M.D. And I am a psychiatrist. I am doing some research into some psychiatric disorders. So, I believe that you will be well suited to fill this role."

Sophia tried not to watch him eat yet didn’t wish to lose the eye contact they had. She smiled to him once she heard him reintroduce himself, “Well, that’s a real coincidence then, I would honestly believe things happened for a reason now more than ever Sir.”

"Well, Miss Dumas, I am very pleased to offer you the role of Administrative Assistant….”
He went on and sure enough Sophia took the offer quickly, she decided in her head that this was a journey she was to take, and for whatever reason Dead man’s Corner was where she was to end up. “Sir you now have a new assistant.” She smiled as she looked to him.

“The gentleman from the garage brought my baggage here for me to the restaurant; Ellie was kind enough to tuck them out of the way for me. I’ll be right back, please excuse me.” With that said Ellie went and took care of her bill, and waited for Ellie to return back from serving another older couple. She thanked her and told her she was now staying most likely she hoped for the summer as his assistant if all worked well for her.

Sophia retuned back to the table, and sat,” the busboy will bring my bags out for me and place them out by the door in a few minutes.”

She noticed he was lost in thought as she retook her seat across from him. She listened to him call over to Ellie and talk as she listened waiting patiently, if anything she wished she could shower and change, she wasn’t used to feeling like a drenched rat and dried by the heat of a public heater in a restaurant, though she was grateful for the warmth.

"Shall we go and get your belongings, and get you settled into your new job?"

He asked her as they finished up everything needed before leaving. “Yes Sir I’m ready, you come highly recommended from Ellie, so I’d be glad to go.”

Sophia walked over to the door and smiled to the busboy as he handed her the one piece of large luggage and the smaller bag and she took them in her hands and pushed the door with her rump, opening it as she wheeled the bigger one out through the twin doors and stood under the awning with the name upon it of the restaurant out of the falling mist as most of the fog seemed to lift only leaving a small amount lingering about.

Sebastian watched as Sophia went about settling her account with Ellie, and arranging for her luggage to be brought out for her. The transformation in her outward demeanor was noticeable. It looked like she had a large weight lifted from her shoulders. Sebastian felt good that he managed to to not only make a gain himself, but he was also able to assist a young lady in her time of need.

Sophia took control of her luggage from the busboy. She had one large case, and a smaller piece of carry luggage. Before Sebastian had the chance to open the door for her, she had opened it herself using her hip. He did, however, manage to take up holding it so she didn't get her case caught by the closing door. Once she had cleared the doorway, standing in the light fog shrouded street, he proceeded to his car. He opened the boot, and walked back to where Sophia stood.

"Here, let me take that for you," he said as he took the case from her hand. Without much effort, he carried it to the rear of the car and placed it in carefully. He closed the boot, and walked out on the road and unlocked the door.

"Sophia, please come around here to get into the car." He noted the look of concern on her face, then he remembered. "This is a right hand drive car, so the passenger seat is on the... wrong side of the car." Sebastian smiled, because to him, the internal arrangement of the car was correct. He was English after all.

Sebastian waited for Sophia to be fully seated before he closed the door, and took his place in the driver's seat. He put his seat belt on and then started the car. The only indication that the engine had started was the slightest vibration as the engine started. He casually placed the car in first, and pulled out.

"Now, since you are without transportation, and this is my only vehicle, if there is a need for you to go anywhere, please notify me in advance and I will happily help you get to where you need to go. Once you have your car back, and if you decide to continue working with me, then that will no longer be an issue."

Dead Man's Crossing disappeared over a small rise as the road continued down to the bridge that gave the town its name. On the other side of the bridge was the remains of the cemetery which gave the bridge its name. But before the Rolls made it to the bridge, they made a turn that took them up stream along side the river. The countryside was mostly tamed. There was the occasional field of crops, or of grazing animals where there weren't pockets of trees.

Soon they were going up a slight rise, the road bending away from the river and striking further into the countryside. When a large brick and stone wall appeared out of the fog ahead of them, so to did an almost looming, substantial Gothic style mansion. Soon, the Rolls slowed down as the gate appeared. With a push of a button, the wrought iron gate slid open, allowing the Rolls Royce to move up the gravel driveway to the building proper. The grounds were open, spacious and well maintained.

"Well to my home, office and lab. Widow's Peak. Delightful name, isn't it? The locals who settled this area were rather imaginative when they named the local features."

Sebastian drove past the front of the mansion, with the small statue of a rearing horse in the centre of the small, gravel roundabout. He continued around the corner and down to a substantial, slightly modern addition to the mansion. The large door rolled up and the Rolls drove in without having to stop until it was completely within the garage. The interior lights activated as the door rolled down, closing with a dull 'boom'.

Sophia gave Sebastian a smile as he held the door for her as she continued to make her way through it so her luggage wouldn’t catch or she wouldn’t be stuck within the doors. She stepped aside and allowed him to escort her to the car by walking before her, she stood there within the mist and waited till he opened the boot and then walked back to her as he offered to take it from there.

Her slender fingers uncurled from the handles as she released them letting him take them as she watched; closing the boot she walked to what she thought was the passenger side. He walked about and unlocked the car as she stood there.

"Sophia, please come around here to get into the car." He said to her as she looked a bit confused, and then he explained to her it was an English car which means everything within is backwards. Sophia felt a little foolish when she looked in the window and noticed the difference and walked around the car and grinned as she sat in the seat and then drew her shapely legs in. She smoothed over the dress as it fell right past her knees and then pulled over the seatbelt and strapped herself in.

He closed the door and walked around the car and got in on the drivers side. She liked he was a gentleman, and he had such great manners. Sophia watched as he got in and buckled up, the car started on the first try and was quiet, it ‘purred’ as she heard most men refer to as quiet cars.

Sophia sat quietly just looking around; he broke the silent when he began to speak about her being without her car. “He said about three weeks Sir and I appreciate the offer and if I need anything of importance I shall let you know, off hand I can’t think of anything I’d need really but I guess one never knows and it’s nice to have options.”

Watching out the window there really wasn’t much to the town at all, it was a town time had completely forgotten about from what she could tell, between the fog and the old homes it reminded her of a spooky setting for a horror movie.

Turning her head she watched as they drove towards the old wooden one lane bridge, she could see the cemetery pas the bridge on the other side, and the sign that read, ‘Dead man’s crossing’. They turned off the road making a right and drove along the river as the land around it was mainly farm land with clumps of trees here and there with critters scattered around various places.

Sophia looked ahead and watched as they drove up a slight hill and then the road curved as a wall came to view, then the wrought iron gates as they stopped, she ducked a little to see the old gothic style mansion sitting within the slight lingering fog.

Sebastian pushed a button and the gates parted and slide to each side as they drove through and along the gravel drive to almost the front of the house and then past it. "Well to my home, office and lab. Widow's Peak. Delightful name, isn't it? The locals who settled this area were rather imaginative when they named the local features."

“Very big home Sir,” she said as her eyes looked everywhere. “The name if very fitting from the looks of it.”

Her head turned as they drove past the house and pulled before a modern garage, the door lifted and he drove in and then it closed behind them as she got out and stood there at the back ready to grab her luggage.

He opened the boot and she grabbed the smaller one as his hand reached for the large, “Thank you,” she replied as she followed behind him.

Sebastian got out of the car, and went around to the boot and removed Sophia's case for her. He considered carrying it for her, but decided that it might be misinterpreted by the young lady.

He led her through a door, into a short hallway. The hallway was designed, and decorated in the manner one would expect from the facade outside. Wooden pillars held up the ceiling, while dark wooden panels made up the walls and ceiling. Every third such pillar housed a small light that shed enough illumination to be able to safely navigate the hallway, but not light it brightly.

Then they entered the main hall, that ran the full length of the house. Unlike the previous hall, this was superbly lit, and the decor was a shade lighter than the previous hall. Opposite the hallway was a set of double doors, with bright brass lever handles. To their left, the hall went to the front of the mansion. To the right, the hall continued to another set of more impressive looking double doors. Also, on the right side, twin stair cases either side of the hall way went up to the second level of the mansion.

"Now, Sophia, once you have had a chance to settle, and unpack a little, I will meet you in the pleasure library," he indicated the double doors on the opposite side of the hall. "Now, let me help you with your case while we head up to where the bedrooms are." He leaned down and picked up her case, leading her up the nearer of the two sets of stairs. The wooden steps creaked ever so slightly under their steps, but not in a threatening, or creepy manner. Again, once at the top of the stairs, he placed the case down for Sophia to take charge of it again.

"Now, just down this way." The hall was decorated with paintings. Some portraits, some landscapes, the remainder were studies of one form or another. All the artists were different as well as the ages. There was no recurring theme, not from the initial inspection anyway. The lighting was supplied by a series of mini chandeliers. The lighting was a nice comfortable level, but bright enough to give the feeling of daylight.

"Here we are. This will be your room while you stay here. As you can see by the key in the lock, the room can be secured. No one will be permitted entry without expressed permission, unless there is an emergency." He unlocked the door, and handed the key to Sophia.

The room was enormous. It was almost two rooms in one. Initially, there was a small sitting area, which included a makeup table and jewelry cabinet, a comfortable recliner with a small table beside it, a book case full of novels and an adjustable overhead lamp to supply light for reading.

There was a door leading out onto a terrace where there was a table and two chairs, looking out over the landscape which included the river.

The other half of the room was dominated by a massive four poster bed, complete with drapes and a set of steps to use to get into it. The material was a rich burgundy, which went well with the almost natural chestnut colouring of the walls and ceiling.

"Now, the door there," Sebastian pointed to a door near the head of the bed, "that leads to your ensuite. There is a shower, spa bath, hand sink, wall mirror, standard cabinets and toilet. That other door is the walk in wardrobe.

"Now, as I said, take some time up unpack, freshen up and have a look around the room. I will be waiting for you in the library with the necessary paperwork for you to fill out and finalise our agreement."

With a small nod, Sebastian turned to head for the door out of her room.

Sophia waited and watched as he removed her luggage out of the boot for her, she took both and waited, once he closed it she followed behind him looking at every little thing taking it all in like it wouldn’t be there when she walked back through.

She stopped once they entered the small hallway and just looked at everything. She loved the interior of the hall, the high wooden pillars, the colors were ‘manly’ but it fit the look of the house, she walked on catching up to him, the lighting was dim but enough to see things and mainly ones way through the short hallway.

Sophia stopped in the main hall and looked around, she sighed softly and knew it would take a bit to find her way around the house; there were double doors everywhere, twin staircases that mirrored each other on opposite sides of the room. She was impressed; the room wasn’t as dark in color, lighter and more lit than the previous hallway, which enabled her to see more of the décor.

"Now, Sophia, once you have had a chance to settle, and unpack a little, I will meet you in the pleasure library," he indicated the double doors on the opposite side of the hall. "Now, let me help you with your case while we head up to where the bedrooms are."

She nodded, “that will be fine Sir.” Looking around she needed to remember what doors he pointed to, or she’d never remember.

He was a gentleman and took her bigger piece up the steps for her; she listened to the creaking of the steps as they walked up them. His sounded under his steps more than hers due to the size difference. Once at the top he gave her the bigger piece back as she looked around and then wheeled it along behind them as he spoke.

Sophia took note of the paintings as they walked along; the house had a eerie feeling to it but nothing bad like in horror movies She wasn’t used to such a place that was dark in colors and had a manly feel to it verses her parents home that was pastels and flowers.

She quickly picked her pace up and decided she’d take another look later when she had the time.

Listening to him she nodded, “thank you,” and took the key as peered in while he opened the door for her and let her go in first. Stepping in Sophia was in awe, she couldn’t believe that it was her bedroom, it was huge.

Placing the suitcase to the side with her bag she walked around looking quickly at everything. There was so much to take in, from the huge four post bed, to the make up table and jewelry cabinet. Sophia walked over to the books and ran her fingers along them reading the bindings, and then turned to him and walked over to the doors leading to the terrace where she stood and looked out the window to the river as it flowed along.

She took it all in looking around as he explained to her and then left her to unpack and take care of anything she needed to. “This is wonderful, thank you very much. I never expected anything this nice Sir.”

She watched as he walked out and then went over and locked the door and undressed. Sophia picked out another dress to wear after she showered.

The shower was a blessing, the hot water after the long morning she had, and she quickly got changed into a pink form fitting dress with a flared skirt, semi low cut, enough to show a bit of her ample breasts. She re did her hair into a nice forty vintage style and applied a bit of make up, and then slipped into a pair of pink pumps and took one last look around the room as she made her way to the door and unlocked it.

Looking around she remembered the way she came up the steps and back tracked to the steps and down into the main hall. The stairs squeaked very little as she walked lightly, once at the bottom she turned and found the double doors he pointed to and knocked, hearing the come in she entered and walked over to where he was.

“Greetings Sir, I feel much better now and apologize for the way I looked earlier.”

Sebastian closed the door quietly, listening to the lock engage as it closed. He walked back to the library, closing the doors after him. He still maintained such habits of a lifetime, even though there was no real need to do so. He thought it proper, and the routine was comforting.

The Pleasure Library was the library that was devoted to the comfortable and leisurely reading material. Novels, anthologies, factual books read for joy and pleasure, as opposed to the Professional Library which was full of journals, papers and research related texts. This library had 3 walls that went from floor to ceiling with book shelves, along with the necessary rolling ladder. Half of the remaining floor space was taken up with 7' high, double sided shelving with enough room for one person to walk between them.

The other half was devoted to four comfortable reading chairs, light sources and two coffee tables. Sebastian sat down in one of the chairs, and looked at the stack of forms and other miscellaneous paperwork required by various agencies when one took on a new employee. He ensured that he had a working pen, he had filled in all the sections he needed to and that generally all was in order.

Rather than just sitting around, he stood up and found a book he hadn't read in many years. He sat down, and started reading 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'.

He heard a gentle knock on the door. "Come in, Sophia." He looked up from his reading, and was surprised to see how attractive Sophia looked in her new outfit. She was dressed in all pink, and the cut of her dress accentuated her bust nicely, revealing a little of her cleavage to spark the imagination. Which it succeeded in doing. Her hair style suited her in her outfit, and she had applied a small amount of makeup. Indeed, she was a far more beautiful sight than when they first met. He watched her walk over to where he sat, and he indicated the chair on the opposite side of the table.

“Greetings Sir, I feel much better now and apologize for the way I looked earlier.”

"Firstly, please call me Sebastian when we are not on work time, or Doctor when we are working together. I have yet to receive a knighthood from Her Majesty, and in general, being called 'Sir' makes me feel old.

"Secondly, there is no reason for you to apologise. You got caught in the rain, and made the best with what you had. You had no chance to prepare for our interview, so your appearance was not held against you in any manner.

"Now, we have here all the exciting paperwork that needs to be filled out to make our agreement legal. You will find all the standard forms, as well as a contract that is written in English, rather than legalese. There shouldn't be anything there that you aren't familiar with, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask."

He couldn't help but notice how much of a classic beauty Sophia was. Her choice in clothing, and the style of her hair and make up was all old fashioned, but brought out all the best features of her. He was fairly certain that she was unaware of the effect her appearance had some people, and if she did, she would change it so it was not as provocative. But the all important factor was going to be how she would deal with being in his presence each day, everyday, for the next three to four weeks. He was used to having people around, namely the household staff, but this might actually be a first for her.

Time would tell. He was confident that they would have a good working relationship, as well as a nice social relationship.

Sophia looked around the library, it was cozy and warm feeling like her bedroom, but unlike the hallway she first entered into. Her eyes ran over the room, she liked how it was set up, the high rows of books, the ladder that wheeled across the floor like she seem in movies but never in real.

There were four chairs in the sitting area, he was in one with a book in his hands, there were two coffee tables and enough lighting that one could sit in there for hours sipping tea and just reading the day away.

He looked her over as she smiled, feeling much better, she moved over to where he was and took a seat across from him as she crossed her legs and placed her hands within her lap.

"Firstly, please call me Sebastian when we are not on work time, or Doctor when we are working together. I have yet to receive a knighthood from Her Majesty, and in general, being called 'Sir' makes me feel old.

"Secondly, there is no reason for you to apologize. You got caught in the rain, and made the best with what you had. You had no chance to prepare for our interview, so your appearance was not held against you in any manner…”

"Now, we have here all the exciting paperwork that needs to be filled out to make our agreement legal….”
Sebastian said and continued on as Sophia looked around the library and then back to him. She could see the title of the book he was reading on the binder, and she herself read it as well, it was a really good read to her.

As it was her turn Sophia spoke up, “Sebastian it is, I can’t help it by calling you Sir is from respect it’s how I was raised. She did chuckle at the little bit he said at the end. “Thank you for understanding it seems my proper upbringing may bother you a bit till I turn it around and remember the do’s and don’ts, I promise it won;’t take me long ” she said.

Sophia took the stack of paperwork and began to read through it, she signed where she needed to and printed below it. It was nothing major, just papers that explain she couldn’t talk about his research, and other things related to it, that she agreed for three to four weeks to work and the pay, room and board she would receive.

Handing them back to him, she commented on the book he was reading, “If that’s the book you’re currently reading it’s very good. I read it about two years ago.”

Once he took them she asked a question, “Do you have one that cooks for you Sebastian or do you cook for yourself? I’m a decent cook if you wish to add that to my duties, I wouldn’t mind I rather like cooking and cleaning.” She uncrossed and crossed her legs and then smoothed her skirt.

Sophia’s eyes wandered over him, he was older and handsome, she wondered why he wasn’t married and had kids, but that wasn’t any of her business.

“Thank you for understanding it seems my proper upbringing may bother you a bit..."

Sebastian chuckled lightly at that comment. "Bother me? No, not in the least. I admire your manners, Sophia. I fully understand that you are being respectful referring to me as 'Sir', but I feel that it is not a necessary mode of address. We will be working together, and spend a fair amount of time together, and I would prefer that we be on a first name basis, at least while we are not actively working together."

He watched Sophia filling out the forms. He saw that she was very thorough, and would complete one section before moving onto the next, repeating that for all the forms she filled out. If she applied herself in such a manner to something simple like forms, he knew that she would do an excellent job on her assigned tasks. He smiled at the good fortune that a broken down car had given him.

“If that’s the book you’re currently reading it’s very good. I read it about two years ago.”

"Yes, I was reading it while I waited for you to freshen up," he replied as she handed him the stack of forms. "I have read it so often that I think I can quote the story from cover to cover. It has been a favourite of mine since I was a child."

He listened to her as she asked about the cooking arrangements. As he was gathering his thoughts, he noticed her uncrossing her legs, and recrossing them again. The movement drew his attention to her well shaped legs, legs he noticed earlier while she walked in to the library. She obviously took care of herself, keeping herself fit and healthy. That and she liked to ensure that she was presentable as well, as her need to smooth her dress denoted.

"Regarding cooking and cleaning, I have a cook, Allison, as well as a maid, Kirsten, who deal with those functions. Which reminds me, Kirsten will handle your washing if you want. You are more than welcome to take care of it yourself is you so wish, but there is no need for you to do it.

"Now, on the matter of cooking, I dismissed Allison for the day thinking I would be in Kellersville for the entire day. So, if the mood does actually strike, then feel free to make use of the kitchen. If there is a time when you have the desire to use the kitchen, just make sure that you have Allison's permission. She's fairly easygoing about it, as long as you clean up after yourself."

Sebastian stood up, gathering up the papers, and returned the book to it's place on the shelves. "Now, if you follow me, I'll show you a few important places that you will need to know about." He waited for Sophia to stand, and indicated that she go out of the room. He took the time to watch her legs, enjoying the play of the muscles under her skin.

He closed the door behind him, and led her up the stairs. Instead of heading down the hallway that led to the bedrooms, they went the other way. The hallway was much shorter and ended with an elevator. He took out a pass card, waving it in front of a sensor to the right side of the door. With a soft beep, the door opened. Sebastian indicated for Sophia to enter, following her inside.

The movement was hardly noticeable, but the doors opened up to a professional outfitted reception area. He led her through a door which was opened by the same pass key into a small hallway. Sebastian pointed to the first door on the right. "That's your office. I'll show you inside shortly." He led her further down the hall, passing another door on the right. "That's my office." Directly opposite his office door was another door. "That's the laboratory. And the door at the end of the hallway is the professional library.

"Now, let's get you a passkey so you don't need to follow me everywhere."

“Sebastian it shall be and Doctor when in the lab, that will make me feel comfortable as you have a legitimate point we will be working side by side.”

“I enjoyed it as well as anything dealing with the mind, multiple personas, and things along that line. I read about mass murderers as well and those that have followers like Jack the Ripper, Gilles de Rais, Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson, I want to know why people choose to follow them like lambs to a wolf. I wish to know what triggers a person in so many areas which is why I chose psychology as a major. It’s the whole sexual thing and non-sexual aspects. Women flock to them in a sexual nature and find then like Gods, and men they do it for other things, not really sure. Perhaps to feel like they belong, oh and family, they feel like they’re a part of something whether it’s good or not.”

I really prefer to do my own Si-i-Sebastion, that’s just how I was raised, to clean up after myself and wash is included but I will consider it if we get rather busy and things pile up.

Sophia nodded as he spoke about giving Allison the cook the day off and to speak with her when and if she wishes to use the kitchen, “Thank you, I will take the offer of cooking a meal tonight since she’s not around and promise she’ll never know I was in there when she appears tomorrow.”

Watching him rise and place the book back she stood with him, as he was going to give her a small tour, she took hint an went out the door of the library first and then stood aside and waited for him to walk out behind her.

This time he led her the opposite way, and then to a set of stairs they climbed up she watched as he used a pass key to enter hearing the soft sound as the door opened and he motioned her in as he followed.

Sophia looked around the reception area, “It’s really big Sebastian, and nice, it’s nothing like I expected.”

He showed her a few places pointing things out for her.

Sebastian led Sophia into her office. It was spacious, with a substantial "L" shaped desk with a rather comfortable looking office chair. There was a computer with two flat panel screens, keyboard, mouse and a headset with a microphone attached. There were also the other usual suspects for an office desk; filing trays, note pads, post-it notes, bundles of writing implements and a whole host of other items that seem to be available in such environments. All of them were neatly piled awaiting their disbursal.

There was on the opposite wall to the the one the desk touched an enormous printer/photocopier. On the back wall were two four draw filing cabinets.

"Now, let me set you up on the system." Sebastian walked around and logged into the computer. Within a few minutes, Sophia had a login to the computer system, a workable passcard and her phone was activated.

"There we are, all done. You can get into this room, and pass all the check points along the way. You will also be able to access the Professional Library. My office and the laboratory will be offlimits to you at this stage. Do you have any questions at this stage?" He logged out of the system, and made it ready for Sophia to log in. Sophia just shook her head with a faint smile.

"Now, all the manuals are in the bottom draw of the left filing cabinet. The keys are in the top draw of your desk. I suggest you read throught them all. In there are details concerning all the standard office processes, as well as on all the usual applications that are used here. I'll be in my office, and if you need me, just come down and knock.

"Once more, welcome to my research facility. Thank you for accepting the role." Sebastian walked down to his office and sat down. Only then he discovered how tense he had been. He was relaxing, and the tensed up muscles were complaining majorly at having been in that state for so long. He spent a few minutes just adjusting to the pain sensations, then he grabbed his last batch of reports and notes from his current experiment. He started plowing through the wealth of data trying to determine what went wrong with that experiment.

He was so caught up with his investigations that he only thought a few minutes had passed when he heard the knock on his door. His clock told him that it was 6:30PM.

"Come in," he said, slumping back in his chair.

Sophia looked around her new office and to her from the small lawyer’s office she once worked in to this it was huge and very modern. The ‘L’ shaped desk was set up efficiently and she had access to two flat screens and a newer computer which was so much better than the old one she used to need to turn on ten minutes before she was able to use it.

Everything was right there for her to work efficiently, she would need to get used to a headset but that wouldn’t be a problem. Sophia didn’t expect this sort of set up by far, she actually thought it would be small and something not so modern, but she wasn’t complaining by far.

She walked around closer to the copier/printer and the filling cabinets as she opened the top drawer and looked at the filing system it was A-Z which most did, others had their own confusing way.

Turning back around he logged a name for her and wrote it down with the password so she could remember it, and then spoke about her access areas and she nodded with a smile, “No Doctor I think I can find my way around, I’ll need to master the phone system but that shouldn’t be a problem, I promise to only hang up on the first caller, and maybe the second,” she said with a grin.

As he spoke she bent forth and felt the back of her dress caress her thighs, she reached and opened the drawer and grabbed a handful of manuals and placed them on the desk.

"Once more, welcome to my research facility. Thank you for accepting the role." Ha said to her as he got up and stood there getting ready to leave her to learn and work.

“I should be pretty good Doctor, and I’ll come and get you if I need help. Thank you.” Sophia said as she took a seat in the black leather office chair and watched him leave her office area and walk to his own.

Sophia read through the printer/copier manual first and fiddled with it making sure she had that down pat before she moved on to the fax machine that was also included in the large piece of equipment as she sent herself a fax, it didn’t take the first few times but eventually she figured it out.

The phone was easier than she thought, she placed the headset on and began to move through calls as if they were coming in, she could do that without even looking at the numbers. That came from the law office and doing a few things at once just like typing, home row was always the best for her and she was able to type like a professional without mistakes.

Time seemed to fly by, she looked to the clock and it was five PM, instead of bothering the Doctor she decided to just make something for them to eat and hope he’ll like it.

Making her way around the house she found the kitchen by accident more or less and looked in the refrigerator and pulled out the chicken breast, she cleaned up as she went along; she hated a mess and liked order.

By the time six fifteen rolled around Sophia had the table set, and the meal ready. She found the old serving dishes with lids, so she set the plates and washed up the pots and pans she used.

On the plate she placed a honey coated chicken breast, a small pile of fresh boiled baby carrots and a decent amount of salad and then covered it up and then did the same for hers as she found twin candles and lit those and returned to the office and by that time it was six thirty PM, she knocked on the Doctors door, waited for him to allow her entrance and entered.

“Doctor supper is waiting, I went ahead and prepared a meal and its waiting for us.”

When Sophia walked through the door, the first thing he noticed were her legs. What followed immediately after that was the clear image of her dress riding up the back of her thighs as she bent down to get the manuals out of the filing cabinet. He momentarily thought he had done something wrong, but he hadn't. She had not exposed herself, and there was nothing wrong with the admiration of a woman's legs.

He finally looked up at her and smiled, genuinely glad to see her.

“Doctor supper is waiting, I went ahead and prepared a meal and its waiting for us.”

"You are wonderful, Sophia. Thank you. But as we are outside of work hours by a mere ninety minutes, you can call me Sebastian. The Doctor has finished work for the day." He walked with Sophia until they got out of the elevator, where he offered her his arm. "If you would do me the honour, Miss Dumas?"

Sophia smiled shyly. "It would be my pleasure, Mister Rhys-Hamilton." She put her arm through his and they walked down to the dining room. Sebastian was surprised at the lengths Sophia went to to prepare the dinner. It was elegant and simple at the same time. She had also taken steps to ensure that the food was well covered.

"Well, Sophia, where would you like to sit?" He held her chair out for her, and aided her to sit down. He then sat down in the other chair. When Sophia took the plate warmer off her plate, Sebastian took it from her and added it to his own. The aroma of the honey coated chicken made his mouth water.

"If this tastes only half as good as it smells, it will be a fine meal, Sophia." He took a piece of the meat and ate it. It seemed to melt in his mouth, and the taste was divine. "Thank you, Sophia. This is wonderful. Let me guess, you learned to cook from your mother?"

Sebastian ate a little more of his dinner, before he stopped and excused himself from the table. He went into the kitchen, and looked in the wine pantry. After a couple of minutes of he gave up in disgust and went to the fridge. He found the bottle of Orange Juice, then a jug and two glasses. He filled the jug, and took that and the glasses out to the table.

"Sorry, but one does not eat a meal with out something to drink with it. Even if it is just orange juice." He proceeded to pour a glass for Sophia, and then one for himself.

"And while this is not the normal fare for such an event, the thought still applies." He raised his glass and held it halfway between himself and Sophia. "A toast to a new working partnership."

Sophia blushed at the compliment he placed upon her and then nodded. “One of these days I’ll address you the right way at the right time.” She smiled as they walked to the elevator and rode it down and then as it stopped she felt her stomach jump as it always did when they stopped so abruptly.

Once the doors opened, he waved her out first and then offered his arm to her as she smiled brightly and slipped hers within his as replied, "It would be my pleasure, Mister Rhys-Hamilton."

They walked arm in arm to the dining room where supper was waiting them, her arm slipped from his as he offered her the chair, she watched as he pulled it out and she quickly took it with grace and felt him help her move forth to the table.

Sophia lifted the silver top from her food and allowed him to take it from her as the aroma lingered in the air around them, she watched as he did the same and the scent grew twice as strong.

They began to enjoy the meal she prepared, she was a bit nervous and when she seen him take the first bite she almost cringed until he commented. “Yes, my mother and grandmother are wonderful cooks. The German side comes out a lot in both of them, and with me I cook outside my heritage. I’m a bit more daring and like to try new things where they are still old fashioned in that way.”

Sophia ate slowly, small bites as she fingered about with the cloth napkin that lay upon her lap. She was still a bit shy and nervous around him but that was slowly going away as she grew comfortable. He excused himself as she continued to eat, looking around at the walls and the decor. She hadn’t had a chance to see the library on her own and figured perhaps before bed she would find her way there and pick a book to read before bed.

Sophia blushed as he came back with drinks; she totally forgot to ask him what he wanted. “Sorry Sebastian, I forgot about that, it was on my mind but I got sidetracked. Thank you, and juice is fine.”

She raised her glass to his letting the soft clinging of the glasses be heard as they toasted, “To a new partnership” she said and then took a sip as she looked over the edge of the rim at him making eye contact for a few minutes.

Placing the glass down she crossed her legs under the table and sat straight up as she ate, “Sebastian have you traveled a lot? I’ve always wanted to go abroad, and so many other places. I'd love to study so many things, mainly people and cultures outside the states."

The glasses tapped with a light tinkle, and the dining couple took a drink. Sebastian noticed that Sophia was making firm eye contact while she sipped from her glass. He wondered what she was thinking. There were times where she felt so young. Not young, maybe lacking worldly experience.

“Sebastian have you traveled a lot? I’ve always wanted to go abroad, and so many other places. I'd love to study so many things, mainly people and cultures outside the states."

Sebastian placed his glass down, and leaned forward a little. "Indeed I have, though mostly as part of my research. Attending conferences, seminars and other similar events. But I have been fortunate to be able to spend personal time in a number of other countries. I have visited Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Canada, The US of course, Japan and Australia.

"Of course, all the European countries I visited were all in easy driving distance of England, or a short flight if I was feeling lazy. I made it a priority to go away from the large cities in any of the countries I visited. That allowed me to visit and meet people more reflective of the cultures and attitudes. One top of that, those folk seem to be far more friendly and polite."

Sebastian had a slight laugh. "I remember one delightful incident that you will empathize with fully. I was driving in one of the few underdeveloped parts of Honshu when my car broke down just outside a small village. I walked about half a mile before reaching the village, and found that the people were most polite and hospitable. The wife of the village elder insisted that I stay with her and eat with her.

"When I got inside, I heard someone groaning in pain. Being a doctor, I had to go and see who it was. The woman's husband was lying on his bed, pale and clearly in pain. His wife was agitated and tried to drag me away. I managed to remember one of the Japanese words for doctor - dokutoru. Well, she all but fell over herself trying to get me back in there.

"To cut a long story short, the man had dislocated his shoulder. I managed to get it fixed, and in a hour, he was moving around and rather grateful. He knew some English, as he had been a prisoner of war held by the Australians during Word War Two. I had a wonderful two days there while my car was dealt with. The villagers were very pleased that I healed their leader. The Japanese are a wonderful people."

Sebastian looked back at Sophia's eyes. They were quite nice to look at. The colour was good, and they reflected the life waiting in her to be enjoyed. She gave him the impression that she had come form a sheltered life, one where most of the nastier realities either had been kept from her, or she chose not to let them impact her. She wasn't naive, nor innocent. Sweet. That was the best word he could think of that adequately described her.

"What made you decide to travel before going onto University? Have you traveled a lot with your family? Or was this your first 'big adventure'? Did you have any definite goals in mind when you set out?"

Sophia watched as he placed his glass down and leaned forth a bit and began to speak and she listened carefully with interest. He listed so many places causing her to feel envy and hope that one day she will be able to do the same thing. “I really envy you Sebastian, to see all those places.”

She listened to him chuckle and smiled as she finished her supper up and placed the silverware upon the plate and cleaned up and then leaned forth and listened to him begin a story hanging on to each word as he kept her attention.

His story made her chuckle as she listened, he held her on the edge of her seat which it didn’t take much she took in everything like a sponge. When he finished she took a sip of her juice and chuckled, “See those stories would make a wonderful book, that’s the things people like to read about. I know it just can’t be me.”

Again they held a look between them; she smiled and felt a little shy with him watching her.

Sophia listened to him ask her questions turning it back around to her.

“My family was never one to travel; my parents are the type to shelter their children from the world, and all the trouble one as a young person could get into. Drugs, sex and drinking are the main three they didn’t wish me to get involved in.”

She took another sip and continued on with her answers. “I decided that in order for me to enter into the world I needed to go out first and see what’s out there for me before I buckle down with classes to the point that I won’t have time to do anything at all.”

“So, this is really my first time out anywhere, and look what happens…” she chuckled…”I end up breaking down and landing a job instead. This was my ‘big’ adventure, and please don’t take it that I regret taking the job, I actually think it’s a real good learning experience for me, and a chance to grow socially.”

Thinking about it for a minute, she shook her head, “No Sir I really had no goals in mind, no plans, I got into the car and decided to just drive and where I ended I ended. I thought of maybe the ocean, I’ve never seen it, I’ve always wanted to walk along the waters edge at night when the moon was full and just feel the warm water rush across my bare feet.”

Sophia smiled and stood up she collected the dishes and took them into the kitchen where she had water waiting, and placed them in and returned back to him. “Sorry I didn’t want the food left to settle and stick.” She took her seat again and crossed her legs.

“Ever married or have kids Sebastian? Please tell me if I’m asking real personal questions.”

"Hmmm... I hope your parents weren't too strict with their protection. If too much protection is applied, then the child is not adequately prepared to meet the world. Oh... do forgive me, I should not have said that. It was rather rude of me." He took a drink of juice to calm himself over his faux pas.

"So you just decided to follow the road wherever fate led you? I will have to say that was not the best of ideas. I suppose I had best not complain too much, because otherwise you would not be here tonight, being the delightful company that you are."

He listened to her talk about what she'd like to do during her big adventure. He imagined seeing her dancing in the water's edge, giggling and laughing as the water washed over her feet. Of course, she'd be holding her shoes in one hand, and the sea breeze moving her hair like a sheet of silk.

"I have just had an idea, Sophia. The ocean is not far from here, and there are some good beaches for just such an activity. How about this weekend, as a reward for you good fortune, we go for a drive and you can see the ocean first hand, in daylight, mind you. We could also have a picnic as well. Make a proper outing of it. Do you like the sound of that?"

Before he could do anything about cleaning up after dinner, Sophia was already dealing with it. He smiled his gratitude to her for her efforts, once more watching her legs as she walked into the kitchen. He found himself fascinated by her legs, always wanting to watch them whenever she was around, particularly when she walked. He frowned slightly, wonder if he was having rather impolite thoughts about his most recent employee. All he knew was he like looking at Sophia's legs, but he had no other carnal thoughts concerning her. Satisfied, his frown disappeared as she returned to the table.

“Ever married or have kids Sebastian? Please tell me if I’m asking real personal questions.”

"Have no fears there, Sophia," Sebastian smiled. "If you do ask me something that I am unwilling to answer, I shall politely inform you. I expect the same from you too. A polite refusal is sufficient, and it will be honoured.

"No, I have been a bachelor for my entire forty two years, though there have been some ladies that have come close to changing that status. But our priorities were different, or we had differing expectations of the relationship, or some other equally damaging interference. But in some ways, it has been good for me. It has allowed me to pursue my research without compromising any other goals of either myself or some other party. Though, I have missed the social contact associated with a partner. And being an old fashioned fellow in outlook, no wife means no children either.

"Do you see yourself being married at some time in the future? Do you want to have a family at all? More importantly, I guess, do you know what you want to do in your life? What you want to be? To achieve? Not just professionally though."

“Honestly Sebastian they sheltered me to much which is where I feel they did wrong in their parenting skills. You said it correctly; I had no chance to prepare myself for anything outside the walls of my home, the church and the small little town I lived in. They did more harm than good yet they thought it was best for me so I can’t be mad at them or hold it against them. No need to forgive you for speaking your mind, everything you said was right, and I know it.”

Sophia chuckled softly, “That’s exactly what I decided to do and again correct. It brought me to this tiny town for the summer.” She didn’t say two or three weeks she said the full summer, Sophia wasn’t looking at short term anymore, she decided she could learn what she needed to from the tiny town that seemed to draw her to it for unknown reasons. ”I do prefer to look at things in a positive way, instead of focusing on the negative. Too many do that these days.” Sophia said with a smile.

Listening to his idea excited her, she tried not to show it but it did show in her face as it lit up and her voice changed a bit. “Sebastian that would be a wonderful idea!” Sophia said. “I couldn’t thank you enough for that.”

Re-taking her place at the table she asked him that question and his response was one she expected about asking personal questions.

Sophia listened and understood where he was coming from but she also knew how lonely it could be when there isn’t another around for companionship or not the right kind one seeks as they grow older.

He pushed the question back at her and she was expecting it but wasn’t really sure what she wanted fully, more the order she wanted it in.

“I would like to be somebody’s wife in the future, as far as a family yes I love children and I hope one day to make a great mother. I haven’t set a date or anything to be married by like many back home.” She looked at her juice and reached taking a sip from the glass.

“Everyone back home is very small town, which means a lot couldn’t see leaving or growing in the education area, where I have always looked outside the box. I’ve always wanted to help people so I read and studied a lot to get the best grades to set myself up for the best of colleges and decided that I would start there and see where it took me. I guess I have a direction but it isn’t etched in stone.”

“I love my parents dearly and I respect them for their choices in life but I need and want to be more than a housewife and mother. Not saying those are easy jobs because they have their trying moments as well but I need more for my brain.”

They were getting into an area she was just a tad uncomfortable talking about, but she wasn’t going to hide anything from him. Sophia took a deep breath and spoke on about her self.

“I’ve never been on a date nor had a boyfriend even, need one to have the other. So, this summer was my growth period in many ways for me. I had a few goals set for myself but those were just thoughts and ideas nothing more.” Her cheeks flushed a soft pink when she spoke; she was unveiling personal things about herself that she’s never discussed with anyone.
