Last night I was testing for my blue stripe on my purple belt in Kenpo Karate. During part of the test I was paired up with a class mate for one step sparring. He was supposed to step through and punch while I demonstrated an inward block and punch. I anticipated the consentual attack and my block cleared before the punch was in the critical zone.

So I got punched right in the face.

I wouldn't feel so bad if it wasn't for the fact that I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and I KNOW BETTER! I felt like such a neophite!

Last night and on the morning drive I kept on saying to myself...you idiot [in that Ren voice...of Ren and Stimpy]

I just wanted someone to say..."there, there little soldier...it's okay..."

It can happen to anyone.

But if you have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do you should definitely know better.

Bear in mind that in a real life situation rather than structured 1 step, 2 step etc. sparring your training takes over and you work on instinct which is a lot more reliable.

*singing* everything's gonna be alright, everything's gonna be alright...

Better? :D

Halo :rose:

yeah I know...

I have been in confrontation and I fair well...

I generally like to step in and to the outside. This technique dictates that you step back and execute an inward block. It was the fact that it was a test and I was demonstrating a move instead of reacting naturally. I've also done this move in class and always blocked the attack.

It's never going to happen again...

Hi Rambrat

Mabe some extra sparring with a partner once a week will help ya out some.It will keep the instinctive nature alive.
Possibly some extra minutes a day meditating would help also.
Sorry to hear about the incident. Was the kick drawn any?Or was it full force?I hope it doesn't happen to you again....thats gotta hurt.I hope my advice helps ya along with things.

Thanks EB...

the punch was with force... but I was stepping back and I rolled with the punch after contact...so I didn't take it full force. My pride was hurt more.

We just starting sparring in class... and I usually do well...that's the funny thing. But you are right... I'm going to spend more time drilling with a partner.

And I think it is a good idea to meditate, so that I can see it clearly in my mind...

thanks again...

Isn't it strange how often when you spar in a formal fashion that things go wrong. Happens to everyone I know who does martial arts - including the instructors!

All is well - your pride will recover.

Your welcome.

I wouldn't dwell on this incident too much.
Sometimes it happens.

Tests are widely misunderstood. We mis-learn early on that they are to rank. In fact, they are part of the learning.

Good point...and very true.
I'd rather learn in a "friendly" environment than a hostile one...
